BMW will promote test driver Marco Wittmann into a race seat as it expands to eight cars for the 2013 DTM.
Wittmann finished second in the 2011 Formula 3 Euro Series before switching to his BMW role this year.
BMW motorsport boss Jens Marquardt said the 23-year-old German had proved he was worthy of a race chance.
“Marco spent the 2012 season preparing intensively for this opportunity,” Marquardt said.
“He was a permanent part of the team throughout the entire year and was present in every meeting. He knows the processes just as well as the other drivers.
“Furthermore, his tests in the BMW M3 DTM showed he is more than capable of coping with the DTM. As such, he fully deserves a DTM seat in 2013.”
BMW also confirmed that it would retain all six of its current drivers, although it did not specify which teams champion Bruno Spengler, Dirk Werner, Martin Tomczyk, Andy Priaulx, Augusto Farfus and Joey Hand would line up for.
New squad MTEK will join Schnitzer, RMG and RBM as BMW entrants next year for the team’s expansion to eight cars.
