The roller coaster named Dover International Speedway played host to Week Seven of the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series (NiCAS), and much like the blistering speeds, the point totals were staggering. Despite the track’s relatively short length of one mile, Dover more than makes up for it with banking. The twenty four degrees of banking is one of the most extreme numbers of any tracks, including tracks twice the size. As if the stadium like high banked track wasn’t odd enough, in 1995 the surface was changed from asphalt to concrete, further baffling drivers and teams.
With all the oddities unique to Dover, common knowledge would lead people to believe that experience would prevail when the 750+ horsepower Chevrolet Impalas took to the concrete surface for 110 laps. That common knowledge proved to be spot on when the NiCAS hit the track, with familiar names stuffing the top ten, scoring huge points in the process.
Current NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series (NiPS) front runner Joey Brown led the way, scoring 336 points in a big tune up race on Sunday Night. Brown won from the pole in the race that decided the majority of the top ten in the weekly standings. Leading all 110 laps, Brown took it to not only his competition, but to “Miles The Monster” as well. NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship (NiSWC) former winner Jason Karlavige scored a distant second, earning 324 points for his efforts. Michael Conti, Landon Huffman, and former NiPS driver Nicholas Morse rounded out the top five with 288 points.
Howard Bell and James Robinson once again led the way in starts on the week, this time with Bell being the most active with fifteen starts. Michael Clemente and John Bunton rounded out the only four drivers to make ten or more starts, with the edge going to Bunton who scored two wins in his ten starts. Former NiSWC drivers Steven Gilbert and Greg Spears scored the most wins on the week, with Gilbert winning five of his eight races, and Spears just one win behind Gilbert’s pace.
With Chad J Laughton having a less than stellar week it allowed Michael Conti to open up a sizable lead in the overall standings, with Laughton free falling to fifth. Conti now leads by 215 points over Kyle Peddle, with Jason Karlavige and Brandon Buie filling in the top four. Laughton got his bad luck out of the way with a last place finish in the NiCAS Sunday night, and rebounded with a NiPS win at Dover on Tuesday night.
Next week for the NiCAS is a historic race for the series, as the haulers will head to Rockingham, North Carolina, for 110 laps around “The Rock”. Rockingham Speedway was a fixture on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule from when it opened in 1965, until it was wiped from the schedule in 2004. The track is now looking for a rebirth, and was scanned and put into use by iRacing.com for top level stock cars to echo the walls once again.
