On Monday we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. Many of you picked up on the resemblance between this week’s shifter and that of a 1960s Corvette; you were simultaneously really, really close and really, really far off. The first commenter to correctly identify the shifter’s origins was Kyle W., who figured out it belongs to a 1967 Iso Grifo. The Italian Grifo borrowed its 327-cubic-inch V-8 from the Corvette—and their four-speed shifters look damn near identical. (See a contemporary Vette’s stick for yourself in Name That Shifter 78.) Kyle will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.
The Grifo pictured here is from our October 1966 issue. With its saucy body, the Grifo looked every bit the part of a Ferrari contender, but its American powerplant actually held it back somewhat. Strapped to 3515 pounds of Italian grand tourer, the 340-hp Chevy engine could accelerate the Grifo from 0 to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds. Top speed was 150-plus-mph, but we estimated in our test that getting to that speed would take a while.
