Gilham to run VW Passats in BTCC

The Volkswagen Passat will be the latest car to join the British Touring Car Championship after Tony Gilham confirmed he plans to build an NGTC version for 2013.

Gilham’s team already intends to run an S2000 Honda Civic and two NGTC Vauxhall Insignias next season and has now added an NGTC Passat programme.

“We have taken delivery and started the build on our latest NGTC project, which is VW Passat CCs to run alongside the Insignias,” Gilham told AUTOSPORT.

He plans to start testing in February and add a second Passat ahead of the start of the 2013 season.

“The long-term plan is to run at least two,” he added.

The team has yet to confirm its driver line-up, but Gilham said it would include “exciting and well-known” names.

He also confirmed that the development and rebuild of the ex-Thorney Motorsport Insignias would continue, and believes his squad is capable of running multiple projects.

“The experience we’ve already had with the Insignia and the staff we’ve got in place means we can definitely do this,” said Gilham.

“It will be interesting – the cars will have their differences, but there are also many spec NGTC parts.”

Gilham confirmed the programme is an independent one, but does have links with VW; he runs a team in the British Volkswagen Racing Cup.

“It is our own project, but we are in talks with VW,” he added.
