Davison dominates in Sydney

Will Davison dominated the final race of the current V8 Supercars era around Sydney’s Homebush street circuit.

The Ford Performance Racing driver produced a brave pass on polesitter Garth Tander into the fast Turn 5 on the second lap and then kept the field at arm’s length to the finish.

Holden Racing Team still looked on course to fill the rest of the podium as Tander and team-mate James Courtney held second and third.

They swapped positions at the first pitstops, but then Tander had to come in again due to a puncture, relegating him to a 16th-place finish.

Courtney eventually lost second to Craig Lowndes. The Triple 8 Holden driver closed in and jumped ahead at the final pitstops.

That secured second in the championship for Lowndes as his rival Mark Winterbottom had a disastrous season finale.

Winterbottom was pushed into the barriers at the first corner by James Moffat, and later incurred a puncture and a pitlane penalty, leaving him 18th.

Champion Jamie Whincup battled through from 24th on the grid after his qualifying problems to finish fifth behind Tim Slade.

After Saturday’s race-long carnage, Sunday’s race featured just two early safety car periods, caused by Shane van Gisbergen parking on track in his farewell race, and Michael Patrizi and Greg Murphy colliding.

Alexandre Premat had to withdraw from race two after suffering heat exhaustion on Saturday. Development Series champion Scott McLaughlin deputised in the Garry Rogers Holden.

The series now switches to its new Car of the Future regulations for 2013, a change that has prompted the arrival of a works Nissan programme and Mercedes from Stone Brothers/Erebus to join the traditional Ford versus Holden fight.
