For two seasons the UFC has attempted to put a dent in Friday night programming with the Ultimate Fighter franchise including a “real time” version featuring live fights. However, with ratings continuing to sag the organization has decided along with FX to return to a day earlier in the week instead of compete with the average fan’s kickoff to the weekend.
The announcement came in a conference call with media to promote TUF 17. No specific day was mentioned, though it may not matter considering the buzz being generated by the involvement of light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and master manipulator Chael Sonnen.
Jones Ready to Make Sonnen Irrelevant
FX representative Chuck Saftler also hinted that his network might be looking to counter-program against Spike TV’s upcoming reality show featuring Bellator fighters that is set for 2013, saying, “I’m not ready to commit to it but we’re certainly going to be watching how they schedule, what they schedule and where they schedule.”
Jones and Sonnen were pegged to head squads as a means of setting up an April 27 title-fight between the two and possibly capturing some of the magic sure to take place between the budding rivals.
