An operation to repair damage to Ben Spies’s shoulder has been successful, Yamaha has confirmed, though the American rider is certain to be out of action until 2013.
Spies, who suffered upper body injuries and a bruised lung in a heavy crash at Sepang, underwent surgery in the USA on Tuesday to repair torn ligaments to his right shoulder.
According to a statement by the Yamaha team, the operation included “reconstruction of the coracoclavicular ligaments and a reduction of a separated acrimioclavicular joint, aided by a twin tightrope device”.
Cadavar tissue was also used to reinforce the ligaments.
Spies is expected to recover fully but will be unable to use his shoulder effectively until mid-December, which means that he has almost certainly ridden a works Yamaha for the last time for the foreseeable future.
The 2009 World Superbike champion is set to join Ducati’s ‘junior’ team in 2013.
Yamaha says it intends to announce a replacement for Spies in the Valencia finale sometime after this weekend’s event at Phillip Island.
