Sauber hopes he doesn’t miss F1

Peter SauberPeter Sauber hopes he does not end up missing Formula 1 after retiring from his role as team principal, but say he is immensely proud to be finally handing over the reins.

Ahead of the Korean Grand Prix, Sauber announced that he was stepping back from F1 with immediate effect, with Monisha Kaltenborn replacing him.

And although he is excited about the prospect of finally being able to relax for the first time since his outfit entered F1 in 1993, Sauber is also keeping his fingers crossed that he does not get withdrawal symptoms.

When asked what he would miss the most, he said: “It’s difficult to say. I hope that I will not miss anything. I will have to get used to this new situation, but for sure there are very nice perspectives to come.”

Sauber feels that now was the right moment to promote Kaltenborn, who has impressed during her tenure at Sauber.

“For a business and particularly in F1, it’s very difficult to find a good succession,” he explained.

“And now as we have this succession, I’m not only happy, I’m also very proud. When you have this solution you should really go for it.

“When young people are willing to take on responsibility, it’s important to give them responsibility. It’s not the case that I don’t like Formula 1 anymore, or that I’m tired. This is not the case.

“When I made this change it was important for me to hand over the responsibility, not only to Monisha, but also to the whole crew, the technical team. The big difference is that you have the responsibility on your shoulders, but many decisions are being made at the racetrack.”

Sauber is convinced that Kaltenborn has the right qualities to help drive Sauber on to more success in the future.

“She is able to make quick decisions and the right decisions. And the same goes for managing the company.

“It’s a technical driven company. It’s very important that you know how to guide the engineers and also designers. And convince them that she’s the right person to be here.”
