People do not run out of interesting words when describing UFC President Dana White – colorful, outspoken, direct, and straight-shooter are among the labels often attached to the brash executive. During his tenure as head of the organization, he has made some shocking statements and he has fired fighters for mountains of different reasons, but there’s only one thing he’s ever done that he would take back.
In 2009, reporter Loretta Hunt released an interview containing sources who wanted to remain off the record. White took umbrage with the quotes and the fact the person who said them was hiding behind anonymity, releasing a rant on YouTube where he used an “F Word” different from the one he’s most often associated with. This one was a homophobic slur and was used multiple times, such as in White’s assessment that, “Any (expletive) guy who won’t put his name on it, first of all whoever gave you that quote is a (expletive) and a (expletive) (expletive) and a (expletive) liar.”
Soon after its release White deleted the video and apologized for the remarks, saying, “I’m sorry. The last thing that I would ever want anybody to think about me, or think is cool, is to go out and attack somebody because of their sexual orientation. That was not my intention. That’s not the way I said it. I apologize for anybody that I’ve offended or hurt. As far as the gay and lesbian community, my comments were not directed toward them. I have no problem with the gay and lesbian community. I’m actually a supporter of many of their issues.”
After weeks of telling reporters he didn’t regret anything in his past, let alone his comments about Jon Jones and the cancelling of UFC 151, White admitted he actually would have handled his response to Hunt’s column differently if he could rewind time.
“You guys have to understand this, but this is the way I am. I have no regrets. The only thing that I regret is in that video blog when I used the F word. That’s the only thing throughout the 12 years of running the UFC. The way I came off in that thing, people still think I’m some kind of homophobe, and I’m not. That still bothers me,” said White on this week’s episode of UFC Tonight.
