Morbidelli keeps Audi Italia drive

Gianni MorbidelliEx-Formula 1 driver Gianni Morbidelli will continue with Audi Sport Italia in the Superstars Series for a third season.

Morbidelli has been a Superstars regular since 2007, winning the Italian title every year from ’07-09 and adding the International crown in the latter year.

He rejoined the Audi fold in 2011 after a two-year BMW stint, but has yet to take a race win since his return.

“Being back for a new season in Superstars is always exciting,” said 45-year-old Morbidelli. “I’m more motivated than ever for fighting back to the top.

“Sure it’s going to be a tough season, with many fierce – and quick – competitors.

“My team already displayed their class. Unfortunately, several unlucky breaks prevented us from fighting for the title in the late part of 2012 but, in the end, that’s racing.

“You win, you lose, you try to put the puzzle together. And this season, I hope to put in the winning piece.”

Morbidelli raced in F1 with the Scuderia Italia, Minardi, Arrows and Sauber teams between 1990 and ’97, plus a one-off outing for Ferrari in the ’91 Australian Grand Prix after Alain Prost’s exit. Third place for Arrows in the ’95 Adelaide race was the highlight of his 70-grand-prix career.

He subsequently focused on saloon car and GT racing, including a stint in the British Touring Car Championship with Volvo in 1998 and beating Johnny Herbert, Tonio Liuzzi, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jean Alesi to the final Speedcar title in 2009.
