On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. This week’s ambiguous shifter proved, well, ambiguous—so much so that no one correctly identified it as a 1971 Morris Marina Coupe’s four-speed shifter.
The Marina pictured here is from our September 1971 issue. The little Morris was the first full child birthed by British Leyland, the conglomerate formed when Austin, Morris, Triumph, Rover, and Jaguar combined forces in 1968. We drove the Marina 1.8 TC, meaning it had the most powerful four-cylinder engine option, a 1.8-liter pushrod unit with twin S.U. carburetors. This setup was good for a little over 94 hp. Despite boasting the top engine option and a feathery 2070-pound curb weight, the Marina took 12.3 seconds to reach 60 mph.
