On Monday we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle from whence it came. It appears we have an MGexpert in our presence, since commenter Horsetail correctly identified the shifter as belonging to the (relatively obscure, to Americans, at least) 1996 MGF. Horsetail will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.
The MGF pictured here is from our March 1996 issue. Even though the little MG isn’t much to look at—the styling’s pretty anonymous, and it lacks the low-slung look one expects of a sports car—it was fairly high-tech. The MGF sported a mid-engine, rear-drive layout, a Hydragas suspension that utilized gas springs with fluid connections front-to-rear, electric power steering, and a Honda-derived five-speed manual transmission. Two versions of the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder were available; the entry-level engine made just 116 hp, while the uplevel iteration featured variable valve timing and pumped out 141 hp. We rather liked liked our brief drive in an MGF, but none were ever officially sent to the U.S.
