Audi Adding Four New Diesel Models for 2014: A6, A7, A8, and Q5 [2012 L.A. Auto Show]

Audi’s U.S. lineup is going to get more diesel options soon, with the A6, A7, A8, and Q5 gaining oil-burners for 2014. All four models—we first reported unofficial confirmation of their stateside arrival in March 2011, and the Q5 was officially announced this past July—will be powered by Audi’s corporate 3.0-liter V-6, and they will make their debuts at the 2012 L.A. auto show.

Of course, diesel engines powering A6s, A7s, A8s, and Q5s is not news; Europe and all of its diesel-loving citizens have been purchasing compression-ignition versions of these Audis for quite some time. But with Audi’s addition of four new diesel models to its U.S. lineup means that the A4, A5, Allroad, R8, and TT remain the only four-ringed cars to be powered exclusively by gas engines here. We expect the A4 to fall from that list, as well as perhaps the A5 and Allroad, when the next generations of those cars arrive in the next couple of years.

Audi has thus far only revealed details on the A8′s 3.0-liter V-6, which will make the same 240 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque as it does in the updated-for-2013 Q7 TDI. Audi estimates that the diesel A8 will return a rather remarkable 24 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway; you probably don’t need us to tell you that those are impressive numbers for a large luxury sedan. The company also claims the big four-door will be able to boogie from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds—just 1.1 ticks off of the time we recorded for the supercharged A8 3.0T.

We’ve already reported that the Q5 TDI diesel will get slightly more power—245 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque—and we suspect that the sportier tune will also make it into the A6 and sultry A7 diesel models. The A8 TDI goes on sale in the spring of next year, followed by the A7, A6, and Q5 TDI models next fall.
