Tomczyk still frustrated over penalty

Martin Tomczyk and Gary Paffett collide at ZandvoortMartin Tomczyk has revealed that he is still annoyed about the penalty that will drop him five spots on this weekend’s DTM grid at Oschersleben.

The reigning champion is carrying the penalty over from Zandvoort, where race stewards judged him responsible spinning Gary Paffett around at Tarzan during the second half of the race.

Following the incident, Paffett told AUTOSPORT: “When he hit me, he was still in fifth gear. He had no control at all. It’s frustrating. He said he made a mistake and locked up, but at that point of the race it’s just silly.”

Tomczyk, however, does not believe that Paffett’s frustrations at the time were a fair reflection of the incident itself, and has vowed to put talk of it to bed immediately.

“I can fully understand that Gary was upset immediately after such a turbulent race,” Tomczyk said.

“That is totally normal for him to react that way and show his emotion. You are always running on adrenalin once you cross the line.

“I know Gary and respect him as a fair sportsman. However, he knows how to look after himself out on the track and, particularly when overtaking, is not exactly one to hold back.

“In the end I think he realised the incident was a normal racing accident. When it comes down to it, I had to retire from the race, while he was able to continue and finish in the points.

“We just have to put this behind us and move on.”
