NHRA JR. DRAG RACING LEAGUE CONFERENCE FINALS RETURNING TO DENVER, BRISTOL FOR 20TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2012
NHRA
GLENDORA, Calif. Dec. 20, 2011
To help kick off the 20th Anniversary celebration of the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League, NHRA announced today that the Western Conference Finals and Eastern Conference Finals will once again return to Bandimere Speedway in Denver and Bristol Dragway in Tennessee for the 2012 season.
The NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League Western Conference Finals will head back to Bandimere Speedway, June 28-30 2012, while the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League Eastern Finals will take place one month later, July 26-28 at Bristol Dragway.
As part of the 20th Anniversary celebration of the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League both tracks will also be hosting activities and events throughout the weekend in addition to the racing action that will occur on the track.
"It's hard to believe that 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the Junior Drag Racing League, a program started to introduce NHRA Drag Racing to young people around the country," said Tom Compton, president, NHRA. "We want to thank our NHRA Member track network for their support of this very important program that has become the proving grounds for future stars in NHRA."
The Western Conference Finals have been at Bandimere Speedway since NHRA adopted the Eastern/Western format in 2000 and Bristol Dragway first hosted the Eastern Conference Finals in 2004. Nearly 1,000 kids compete for individual and team honors at the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League Eastern and Western Conference Finals, with nearly $100,000 in savings bonds given away at each event including a $5,000 savings bond and an NHRA Wally champions trophy to each individual winner.
"The growth of NHRA championship drag racing starts with today's youth and we congratulate NHRA on twenty years of the Jr. Drag Racing League," said John "Sporty" Bandimere, III, executive vice president and general manager, Bandimere Speedway. "Over the past twenty years we have seen Jr. racing become more intense and competitive and in turn develop some of drag racing's top drivers. The competition, friendship and camaraderie that comes from the Western Conference Finals makes hosting the event an honor and we continually look forward to playing host to our racing family."
"We are proud that the Jr. Drag Racing League Eastern Conference Finals once again will take place in Thunder Valley," said Julie Bennett, vice president, Bristol Dragway. "Imagine the excitement of these kids knowing their first national event win could take place at a track with the history and tradition of Bristol Dragway. These drivers are our future and we can't wait to show them a good time here in Bristol."
Created in 1992, the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League allows kids between the ages of 8 and 17 to experience the thrill of motorsports competition in a controlled environment at tracks in each of NHRA's seven geographic divisions. The NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League creates family involvement in drag racing at an affordable level. Many of the league's former participants have gone on to compete in other NHRA classes. Top Fuel racers Shawn Langdon (a two-time Super Comp national champion), Morgan Lucas, and Spencer Massey and Pro Stock driver Erica Enders, are among the league's graduates while current NHRA Lucas Oil Stock national champion Joe Santangelo II and the 2010 Lucas Oil Super Stock national champion Ryan McClanahan are former Conference Finals champions.
Headquartered in Glendora, Calif., NHRA is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2011. As the primary sanctioning body for the sport of drag racing in the United States, NHRA presents 22 national events featuring the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series. NHRA provides competition opportunities for drivers of all levels in the NHRA Summit Racing Series and the NHRA Drags: Street Legal Style presented by AAA. NHRA also offers the Jr. Drag Racing League for youth ages 8 to 17. In addition, NHRA owns and operates five racing facilities: Gainesville Raceway in Florida; Atlanta Dragway in Georgia; National Trail Raceway in Ohio; Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis; and Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in Southern California. Bicycle Uprising: Celebration Ride and Community Forum This Friday
Cyclists of all stripes and generations will converge on lower Manhattan this Friday evening, September 28, for a two-part event celebrating the street actions that thwarted a ban on cycling and threw bike activism into high gear 25 years ago, and charting a course for livable streets progress today and tomorrow.
Part I is a mass bike ride from Greenwich Village to Central Park South via Sixth Avenue, returning downtown via Fifth and Park. Riders will gather at 6:30 p.m. at West Houston Street and Sixth, which was the launching pad for the messenger-led rides that won over the public and turned the political tide against the 1987 Midtown Bike Ban. It’s also where the driver of an oversized tractor-trailer struck and killed scooter-rider Jessica Dworkin earlier this month — a stark reminder of the mounting human toll of NYC’s motor-centric traffic culture.
The ride sets off around 7:00 pm. Like the 1987 protests, it will be leisurely, non-confrontational and yielding of right of way to others. We’ll arrive at Cooper Union around 8:30 and enter the Great Hall (site of presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln’s historic address in February 1860), where Part II of the evening — a community forum with film screening and panel discussion — kicks off at 9:00 sharp.
The film, the vintage 40-minute documentary “Fifth, Park And Madison,” is renowned for its classic footage and real-time commentary about the uprising that beat back the bike ban. It will be followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A about bike activism and advocacy then and now, with Steve “Greek” Athineos, who led the direct actions against the ban and now owns Mothers Messenger Co.; Monica Hunken, Time’s Up! ride leader, organizer and board member; Charlie McCorkell, founding owner of Bicycle Habitat and a mainstay of NYC bike advocacy since the 1970s; Tony “Stone Tone” Monroe, bike messenger and renowned organizer of alley-cat bike races; Caroline Samponaro, director of bicycle advocacy at Transportation Alternatives; and Laura Solis of We Bike NYC (Women’s Empowerment through Bicycling). Click here for program plus panelists’ full bios.
You can do just the bike ride or the forum. Both are free, as is Cooper Union valet bike parking. Rain or shine, don’t miss this Friday’s once-in-a-generation celebration of the activism that has done so much to transform the New York City streetscape and bring bicycling into the mainstream, and a high-spirited discussion of where we go next.

Nick Diaz's camp files motion for judicial review of marijuana suspension, fine
According to a report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Diaz's camp is hoping to receive the "first available court date for a review of the (NAC's) decision with the goal of getting back in the cage before the end of 2012."
Diaz and his attorney argued during May's hearing that the presence of marijuana metabolites in his system did not constitute a violation of the commission's rules as written. Diaz has the legal right to use marijuana in the state of California, and the presence of the metabolites, they argued, only proved that he had used the drug, not when. Additionally, its levels in his system were so minuscule that it was evidence that he had not used close enough to the fight to be under the influence, thus not breaking the commission's rules for using "in competition."
"The (NAC) prohibits the use of marijuana before or during competition to protect fighters - to prevent them from fighting while impaired," Diaz's attorney Ross Goodman wrote in an email to the LVRJ. "However, Diaz's sample showed no active THC in his system but only inactive metabolites related to his much earlier medical marijuana treatment. Inactive marijuana metabolites are not a prohibited substance under the (NAC's) rules. The (NAC) has no basis in its rules for disciplining a fighter for legal use of medical marijuana outside competition. In doing so, the (NAC) acted unlawfully."
NAC executive director Keith Kizer disagrees with the Diaz camp, and asserts that Diaz using marijuana at all is a violation.
"At the end of the day, Nick admits that he took a prohibited substance before the fight, which is a clear violation," Kizer said. "Failing the drug test is not the violation. Taking the drug is the violation, and he's admitted to that."
Penick's Analysis: Based on how the NAC hearing went in May, it will be interesting to see how a judicial review is received. Regardless of thoughts on the merits of Diaz's argument, it can't be denied that their assertions went largely ignored by a commission whose mind had been made up. That doesn't mean they'll sway a judge in this case, and they'll need to make a compelling argument against the NAC procedures as well. It's certainly possible for a judge to rule in their favor, and the NAC may have some explaining to do at the end of the day, but at this point it's still a long shot for Diaz to return any earlier than February 2013.

Shane Carwin injures knee but fight with Roy Nelson still expected to take place
The UFC has seen its fair share of headlining fighters go down for health-related reasons over the past few weeks. Unfortunately, it appears heavyweight Shane Carwin is now one of them, though on the bright side he is only expected to be out for a few weeks and won’t be forced to withdraw from an upcoming tilt with opposing TUF 16 coach Roy Nelson.
Carwin revealed his status on Twitter, saying he would be unable to travel overseas for a signing he’d been scheduled to participate in due to some problems with his knee.
MMAWeekly later confirmed the injury with Carwin’s management where it was stated the hard-hitting heavyweight hadn’t torn anything and would be back to 100% in time for a December 15 fight with Nelson at the Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale. The minimal nature of the damage is certainly good news to fans of Carwin, as the 37-year old has been out since June 2011 due to a variety of injury issues.
Carwin: “I hate Nelson as a person…”
Nelson and Carwin can both be seen heading TUF teams every Friday night on FX. The two men have yet to bump heads on the show, though their dislike of one another on a personal level is well-documented due to numerous spats in the media.

Top 10 Biggest Fights that Never Happened
In MMA’s relatively short life span the sport has missed some intriguing bouts due to promotional shake-ups, retirement, injuries, or simply bad timing. Here’s a look at ten possible pairings most fans would kill to see…
Ken Shamrock vs. Frank Shamrock
Brother versus brother? What family members would agree to that? Though perhaps not today based on age, if a contract had been set in front of the Shamrock brothers between 2005 and 2008, chances are they both would’ve signed it in a heartbeat. Ken even stated the fight wouldn’t have been about respect but rather putting his adopted brother where he belongs. Talk about sibling rivalry!

LaHood Incorrectly Blames 80 Percent of Pedestrians for Their Own Deaths
Last week, U.S. DOT Secretary Ray LaHood helped NYC transpo commish Janette Sadik-Khan launch a new phase of the “LOOK!” campaign, with pavement markings instructing texting pedestrians to wake the hell up. He made a comment that made its way into his blog post about the event, as well as other media reports on the event, and it caught the attention of Streetsblog NYC’s crack reporting team.
What LaHood said was that many pedestrian deaths that occurred nationwide in 2010 were easily preventable, as “nearly 80 percent happened because someone was jaywalking.”
That hits like a ton of bricks, doesn’t it? Drivers dart around in powerful, heavy, dangerous contraptions at high speeds while texting, tweeting, eating, and shuffling through their iPods, and it’s the person hoofing it that’s to blame? Eighty percent of the time?
Turns out he was misquoting some data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which showed that in 2010, 79 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred at non-intersections. Someone on LaHood’s staff looked at that statistic and figured “jaywalking” was pretty much a synonym for whatever was happening there.
I don’t know who was ruled at fault in all of those cases, but I do know for sure that being killed at a non-intersection doesn’t necessarily mean you were jaywalking. Maybe a drunk driver swerved off the road and onto the sidewalk. Or a motorist didn’t look when pulling out of an alley or driveway — U.S. DOT confirmed that curb cuts don’t count as “intersections” in this case.
And then there are cases, like that of Raquel Nelson in Georgia, where there simply is no intersection. In suburban areas, you can walk half a mile before you get to an intersection or even a crosswalk. It’s not that no one ever needs to walk across the street, it’s just that planners have ruled that they must take their lives into their own hands when they do.
NHTSA already laid enough blame on pedestrian crash victims with its report, by focusing on how often they were intoxicated. For the secretary himself to say at a major press event that fully four out of five people mowed down by cars were “jaywalking” and therefore at fault is just wrong. It obscures the truth that motorists — not pedestrians – cause the most havoc on our streets.

Who is to blame for UFC 151 cancellation?
Plenty of anger bubbled up after UFC 151 was canceled. From UFC president Dana White to fans who posted on Cagewriter's Facebook page, people are angry there won't be fights in Las Vegas next weekend. Anger quickly turns into a search for blame. Who do you blame for UFC 151's demise?
Jon Jones: When an injury happens, fighters often have to make sacrifices to still be able to fight. Ask Rich Franklin about the many times he has stepped up when the UFC needed him to, and how he's been rewarded. Jones didn't do that, and missed out on an opportunity to win a ton of fans. He made a business decision, but now will have to face the business consequences for how fans react when fights at UFC 152.
The UFC: In planning a top-heavy card with UFC 151, they were playing with fire. Main event fighters are injured all the time. Even Jones has had to postpone fights for an injury. Putting a holiday weekend pay-per-view on the backs of two fighters was begging for a problem, as was hoping for a late replacement after a very busy summer of MMA.
Greg Jackson: UFC president Dana White threw some blame towards Jackson, Jones' coach.
"Jones's trainer, Greg Jackson, told Jon that taking the fight with Chael would be the biggest mistake of his life. That's what he told Jon Jones. Let me tell you, this guy (Greg Jackson) is a sport killer," White said on a media conference call.
"When you are a champion, much less one of the guys who is supposed to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, you are supposed to step up. Jon Jones is a guy a lot of fans don't like, and I don't think this is going to make him any more popular. Lorenzo Fertitta (UFC chairman and CEO) and I are disgusted with Jon Jones and Greg Jackson."
Dan Henderson's knee: And here we come to the real culprit behind the cancellation of UFC 151. How dare you become injured when training in a brutal, dangerous sport, knee?
Canada: Always blame Canada.
Does any one person or group deserve the blame for UFC 151 being canceled? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Vincent and Rhyne repeat
After several weeks of testing and racing in Japan to open their 2012 Season Three schedule, the Red Sox Racing League finally returned to the United States for this week’s event, the “Tracksunlimited.net presents Barber Motorsport Park” in Leeds, Alabama. Nineteen drivers made the trip to northern Alabama to test their skills on the tricky 2.38 mile, 16 corner layout.
Brad Vincent, confident he could keep his winning streak alive after back to back wins in Japan, led the way in the Class A HPD qualifying session and earned the pole with a lap time of 1:12.136. Justin Kirby (2nd), Les Turner (3rd), and John Koscielniak (4th) also posted sub 1:13 lap times as they looked to knock Vincent out of victory lane. Terry Daul (5th), Ed Sutcliff (6th), and Andy Feldman (7th) posted sub 1:14 qualifying laps. David Weiss (8th), Kevin Kyle (9th), William Kabela (10th), and Kyle Young (11th) completed the HPD grid.
Paul Hesla led the way during qualifying in the Class B Corvette field as his lap time of 1:19.211 was good enough to hold off Tommy Rhyne (1:19.466) and Dennis Griffen (1:19.691). Dean Moll (4th), Corey A. Wolf (5th), Scott Husted (6th), Jeff Thomas (7th), and Ricky Hardin (8th) completed the Corvette grid.
Normally a clean group, RSR drivers must have been suffering from jet lag in Alabama because sixteen drivers collected a season high 91 incidents, while only three managed to complete the race incident free. Racing action got off to a blistering pace as Turner got past Kirby and into 2nd place with an excellent start. Approaching the s-curves of turns 7-8-9, where there is only room for one car to pass at a time, Turner made an error in his braking and his Honda’s back end broke loose catching Kirby by surprise, who was unable to react to Turner’s mistake and ended up slamming into the rear of Turner’s car. The impact forced both drivers off course on opposite sides of the track. Fans lining the front of the Barber Museum had a great view as the rest of the hard charging HPD field negotiated their way past Turner and Kirby coming out of T9.
Kirby’s night got worse when he collected additional damage entering pit road for repairs. Turner’s pit crew was MIA when he nursed his car to pit road.
Moll was in 4th place in the Class B race when he overshot the corner exit at T1 on lap two. His car spun back across the track before doing a lazy 360 spin. Moll did a nice job of driving and managed to keep the car off the wall. He wasn’t as lucky when he spun out in T5 and crashed into inside wall a lap later. Moll kept racing and somehow avoided further damage when he spun out in exactly the same spot a lap later. Unfortunately, his nightmare continued half a lap later when he went off course in turns 13-14 and collected Koscielniak while rejoining the track. Moll was forced to retire from the race after bringing his car to a stop. Koscielniak continued racing with nose damage, but lost several spots as he nursed his damaged car around the track. But he was back up to speed after his crew replaced his nose in the pits.
T5 collected Kyle and Young in separate incidents on lap five, but both drivers were able to continue racing. The curbing of the s-curve was abused by most of the drivers all night, but Feldman took an unusually brutal shortcut when he barreled through the corners on lap eight. Barely maintaining control of his car, Feldman cut across the infield grass just missing Sutcliff. Koscielniak had a clear view of the action and was able to get past Feldman coming out of T9. Feldman regained his composure and a lap later re-passed Koscielniak who was at an aerodynamic disadvantage due to his damaged nose.
Hardin lost valuable track position when he went off track and spun towards the inside wall while exiting T2 on lap eight. Kyle provided the most fireworks of the night when he launched Kirby into orbit on lap eleven. Having passed a Corvette on the front stretch, Kyle carried too much speed into T1 and overshot the corner. His tires found no grip on the grass and allowed Kyle’s car to continue sliding back onto the track in T2. Kirby had nowhere to go as Kyle’s car slid into his path and the resulting impact sent Kirby high into the sky. Luckily, neither driver was seriously injured in the incident.
A similar incident collected Hesla and Young at the exit of T4 on lap sixteen. Hesla lost third place as a result of the mishap and eventually retired from the race.
Class A results
Vincent took full advantage of the mess behind him on lap one and quickly put an insurmountable lead over the rest of the HPD field. He went on to lead all 25 laps while lapping most of the field before he crossed the finish line. Daul finished a minute behind Vincent after inheriting 2nd place from Koscielniak on lap six. Koscielniak battled back from his early race damage to finish in third place, one second behind Daul.
Feldman finished in 4th place after executing a perfect pit stop to overtake Sutcliff half way into the race. Feldman was the last HPD driver to finish on the lead lap. Sutcliff (5th), Weiss (6th), Kabela (7th), and Young (8th), were scored one lap down. Kyle (9th) and Kirby (10th), both finished fifteen laps down.
Turner retired after three laps and finished in last place. Reporters found him grilling hamburgers with Wilbur Gildersleeve, Jr after the race. Turner was disappointed with his finish, but sounded upbeat about his chances to keep pace with Vincent in the overall standings. “I missed the corner entry and had to lift to get the car under control, but got slammed pretty hard from behind. The pit crew was over at Wilbur’s grill getting snacks when I came in, so I had to go back out with a damaged car. I parked it and joined Wilbur once I realized my night was over. We’ll come back strong at Brands next week.”
Kabela was the only driver to complete the race without an incident.
Vincent continues to lead the season championship race after three events. He has a seven point lead over Daul. Koscielniak, Feldman, and Turner round out the top five spots.
Class B results
Hesla dominated the early going, but Rhyne worked his way into victory lane with clean, smooth driving. The win was Rhyne’s second in as many weeks.
RSR newcomer Dennis Griffen crossed the line in 2nd place. Husted finished in 3rd. “We had several goals tonight”, said Husted. “We hit the first two by qualifying ahead of last place, and by avoiding the lap one incident. Then we managed to get into a fast race pace, so I knew it was going to be a good night. We had some scary moments with the HPD cars going past, but otherwise it was a very clean race. Corey and I had some great racing and I think I could have gotten closer to Dennis if we’d had a few more laps. No penalties and no mistakes on pit road were the keys to this podium finish!”
Wolf was the last Corvette driver to finish on the same lap with Rhyne. Thomas (5th), and Hardin (6th), were both scored one lap down to the Corvette leaders. Hesla (7th) and Moll (8th) both retired early from the race.
Rhyne and Griffen were the only Corvette drivers to complete the race without incident.
Next Race
RSR travel to England for the “Brands Hatch Fall Festival” next week.

Dana White praises Jon Jones after Vitor Belfort win at UFC 152, calls it "his best performance"
However, following Jones' victory over Vitor Belfort at UFC 152 on Saturday night in Toronto, White had nothing but praise for the 25-year-old.
"There's no doubt that this was his best performance," White said at the post-fight press conference. "He looked phenomenal tonight. There was a lot of questions about Jon Jones that people kept asking over and over again, no matter who he fought. No matter how good he fought. Could he take a punch? He got hit with some big punches tonight from a real puncher, and he took them. He was injured. He had the heart to keep going, and he had a great fight tonight.
"There can be no more naysaying about Jon Jones. You love him or you hate him... but you can't deny that the kid is extremely talented and one of the best in the world."
Penick's Analysis: I wouldn't go so far as to call it Jones' best performance, but it was absolutely one of his most revealing and surprisingly challenging fights. The armbar hurt him, and he had to survive and fight back through that in a way he's never had to deal with before, but he was certainly down on how he fought at times. It wasn't his cleanest fight, and he left himself open in spots - and obviously the armbar was the most egregious. Still, he did battle through that, absorbed some big shots, and beat Belfort up for three rounds before nearly breaking Belfort's arm in the favor-returning Americana in the fourth round. It was still a showing of how dominant he is, but that part was expected. Still, that fight revealed tons about Jones' heart in the midst of a fight, and he didn't fold when it would have been easy to do in that first round. That part was great to see.

Massa unimpressed by Senna incident
Felipe Massa described his near-miss with Bruno Senna in the Singapore Grand Prix as “really not nice” and admitted he had initially been furious.
The two Brazilians were battling for ninth after the second safety car restart. The Williams and Ferrari went side by side through the Turn 11/12 kink over the Anderson Bridge, with Massa making contact with both Senna and the barriers before catching a huge slide as he completed the outbraking move into Turn 13.
Massa felt Senna should have given him more room.
“I think that was really not nice because I was already alongside and he pushed over to my car and wedged me into the wall,” said Massa.
“Fortunately nothing happy with my car. I’m a little bit more calm now.”
At the time Massa was fighting back through the field after sustaining a puncture on lap one.
He eventually finished eighth, but was convinced he had top-five pace despite only qualifying 13th.
“It was a puncture because someone touched me,” said Massa. “It’s unfortunate but the car today was fantastic.
“I was so happy with the car and the pace and how I was driving today.
“Even starting 13th it was a race where we could’ve finished in the top five with both cars.
“I’m happy with my race but not with what happened at the first corner, but it’s true that starting near the back it’s more likely this can happen.”

Tim Kennedy clashing with Trevor Smith at Strikeforce show in November
A replacement still hasn’t been named to fight Daniel Cormier after Frank Mir was injured and pulled out of their upcoming fight, but Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker recently took to Twitter to announce another tilt that has been added to the card, as middleweights Tim Kennedy (14-4) and Trevor Smith (10-2) will square off on the November 3 lineup.
Kennedy will be looking to rebound after losing his middleweight title-shot to Luke Rockhold in July. Prior to that, Kennedy had gone 6-1 in Strikeforce with his only loss coming to former champion Ronaldo Souza. With a dominant performance, Kennedy could position himself at the top of the division considering the organization’s lack of contenders.
Kennedy Talks Frustration with Inactivity
Smith lost his last Strikeforce fight, but he picked up a first round win over Alexandre Moreno in June. Smith, regarded as a submission specialist, has nine tap-outs to his credit in ten total wins. If he can pull off a submission win against Kennedy he will only be the second guy to finish him in his career, and there’s no doubt a decisive win in November could put him a fight or two away from the a title shot of his own.
Kennedy and Smith will likely play a supporting role on the card as Strikeforce continues to scramble to find a replacement for Mir. The November show will also feature a title-fight between 185-pound champ Rockhold and unbeaten Lorenz Larkin.

Strikeforce’s Three Stars: Ronda Rousey, Ronaldo Souza and Miesha Tate
After an exciting night of fights, Ronda Rousey still distinguished herself as the biggest star. Here are Cagewriter's picks for Saturday night's three stars. Tell us yours in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.
No. 1 star -- Ronda Rousey: What is there left to say about Rousey? She got Kaufman to the ground with ease and threw an armbar on in less than a minute. Before Saturday, Kaufman had only lost once. Rousey then turned her sights on Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, telling the former featherweight champ to come down to bantamweight. If it's physically possible for Cyborg to do is a discussion for another day. For now, just enjoy every part of Rousey's blistering performance.
No. 2 star -- Ronaldo Souza: With "Jacare's" world-class grappling credentials, it's easy to forget he has power in his hands, too. He quickly reminded Derek Brunson and everyone watching with a 41-second knockout.
No. 3 star -- Miesha Tate: One of the best fights of the night was on the prelims, as Miesha Tate and Julie Kedzie put on a memorable fight for three rounds. Tate was on the wrong end of an armbar in her last fight, but must have learned something about the submission move as she used it to submit Kedzie in the third round.

Dana White labels Bellator’s handling of contracts as “borderline criminal”
UFC President Dana White has always shown a certain level of respect for Bellator, expressing appreciation for the company’s product as well as CEO Bjorn Rebney’s focus on doing his own thing instead of attempting to compete directly with the UFC. However, it looks like White’s opinion on Bellator has soured as of late relating to the way company does business with its fighters.
Bellator has been under fire for a situation involving bantamweight Tyson Nam after the talented youngster knocked out Bellator champion Eduardo Dantas in a bout outside of the promotion. Understandably, a number of MMA organizations expressed interest in signing Nam, yet an old deal with Bellator prevented him from inking a new contract without the company having an opportunity to match (even though they released him in June).
White, who has never been afraid to speak his mind, caught wind of the situation once the UFC tried to add Nam to its roster and blasted Bellator for the matter in a conversation with media members last night after the conclusion of UFC 152.
“I don’t talk much about Bellator but what they do (with contracts) is one of the dirtiest things you can do in the business. It’s dirty, it’s grimy, and it’s just despicable,” ranted the outspoken executive. “I have the right to match, but once I cut a guy and let him go, and somebody else tries to sign him, I don’t come back and say, ‘Aww, you’re breaking the contract. I have matching (rights).’ Know what I mean? When you made the decision to cut him, you cut him. That’s one of the scummiest, dirtiest things you can do in the fight business.”
“(Nam) is not gonna make or break the UFC but the problem is, the dirty scumbag moves that these guys are pulling hurts the fighter. It’s one of the dirtiest, lowdown, despicable things you can do in the fight business,” he continued, adding, “I guess that’s the way those guys do business. We don’t do business like that. I have no beef with those guys, they’re doing their own thing (and) I could care less. But that’s dirty. That’s dirty and it’s borderline criminal.”
Rebney’s defense regarding Nam’s situation has been one of mild confusion, stating Bellator handles contractual matters the same way a number of major MMA organizations do and is not out to prevent fighters from making a living. Meanwhile, in a relatively recent interview with MMAJunkie, Nam’s manager stated that Bellator is planning to sit on Nam’s contract until the matching period runs out next year unless he re-signs with the promotion.

Tesla Kicks Off “Supercharger” Network of Free Solar-Powered Recharging Stations
Range limitations will no longer be such a roadblock for electric cars, an uncharacteristically demure Elon Musk predicted tonight. At an event in Tesla’s California design studio, the CEO announced that the company was developing a network of solar-powered, high-speed charging terminals to be installed at roadside restaurants, rest stops, and shopping centers. The Supercharger—a tall, Trek-y obelisk—will pump 90 kW of energy into a Model S in just 30 minutes, according to Musk. A 240-volt outlet would deliver only 10 kW in the same time.
Although the very short recharge times will appeal most to customers, Tesla sweetens the pot with its pricing: Using the Supercharger is free.
Musk explained rather vaguely that “economies of scale” of the Model S enable Tesla to offer recharging at these Supercharger stations for free. Even though the solar energy itself is free to Tesla and SolarCity, the electric power company helping administer the program, the cost of the towers themselves is no doubt enormous, as will be maintenance and eventual replacement of storage batteries.
Thus far, six Superchargers have been installed in California, theoretically providing a corridor of free energy to traverse the entire state, and to travel to the popular vacation regions of Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas. The company has plans to expand the network across the country to New York next year, and says it will reach 100 stations nationwide by 2015.
Thirty minutes of recharging time, especially from a solar source, sounds great, but Musk’s pronouncement that this means there’s “no meaningful difference between driving an electric car and driving a gasoline car” is too optimistic.
This ambitious plan brings with it very significant questions, which as of tonight had no answers.
- How many Supercharger outlets will be installed at each location? Especially because the juice is free, we imagine that Model S drivers on popular travel routes could find themselves waiting for a spot to open up, further adding to the 30-minute clock.
- Does the high-power charging system have any effect on the durability and lifespan of the Model S’s battery pack? This can be an issue with lithium-ion battery packs in other cars and devices.
- How much energy can the Supercharger units store? If there’s a steady stream of customers, we could see demand depleting reserves faster than the solar panels can recharge them.
- What happens when there isn’t enough sunlight? Can and will the Supercharger stations pull electricity from the regular grid?
While we wait for those answers, there’s still no denying that Tesla’s announcement tonight addresses head-on one of the chief impediments to success faced by cars powered by electricity, hydrogen, or other alternative means: convenient refueling. Are we looking at the beginnings of a major, nation-shaping infrastructure project or just a clever idea that will never reach critical mass? We’ll have to wait—far longer than 30 minutes—to find out. Read full story »

Rumor: Wanderlei Silva vs. Chael Sonnen Being Eyed as Potential UFC 153 Main Event Replacement
Just a few hours ago, we promised that a few beautiful knockout videos would successfully help us all blissfully drift into a world where injuries no longer determined both the content of every other CP article and the makeup of every other UFC card, but it seems our vision of an impossibly awesome MMA utopia is merely that an impossibility.
Be that as it may, some of you might be pleased to hear that amidst the UFC 153 clusterfuck of injuries lies a potential silver lining. According to FightersOnly, who have sited several anonymous sources, a grudge match years in the making between Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen is being looked at as a possible replacement for UFC 153 now that Jose Aldo or perhaps, the general incompetence of Brazilian drivers has massacred our dreams of a featherweight title superfight.
Details remain sketchy at the moment, but in a recent interview with Portal do Vale Tudo, Silva stated that he would be more than willing to step up for the good of the UFC and his home countrys fans if asked to do so:
I think fighting in Rio would be great. Under no circumstances could I turn that down. I would love to fight for the crowd in Rio, and if it were against that guy who everybody wants me to face, it would be beautiful.
Spoiler alert: Chael Sonnen is that guy who everybody wants me to face.
Rumor has it that the bout is being considered at a catchweight of 195 pounds, which might sound familiar to the three of you who actually paid for UFC 147. At this point in his career, Wandy is basically the go-to guy for any Brazilian MMA card that is circling the drain.
Wanderlei also stated that although he wasnt exactly in fighting shape at the moment, he is on weight and healthy enough to fight if needed:
From experience, a fighter always has to be ready. I am not in a competition training schedule but I am training, on-weight and feeling good. Its just a case of if I am offered the fight.
I accept to fight any one and with him it would be tasteful. It would be a bout that people would like to see. I wasnt offered it yet, but if the boss needs me and I can contribute to make the fans happy, I would feel so glad.
Without opening up a whole new can of worms (or perhaps a can of worms that just wont close), wed just like to say that we wish every MMA fighter had this attitude. But there we go again, dreaming of a world that will never exist.
Sonnen has yet to comment on the potential matchup, and is still scheduled to face Forrest Griffin in his return to the light heavyweight division at UFC 155.
We will have more on this potential matchup as things develop, but in the meantime, heres a video (courtesy of MMAFighting) in which Dana White laments over UFC 153 and how frustrating it is to be poor Frankie Edgar these days. Without trying to sound like a kiss ass, I must say that I honestly feel sorry for both guys in this situation, as both of them cant seem to catch a fucking break lately. Oh well, I guess the fact that DW is richer than most, if not all Central African countries combined should help him sleep tonight. That, and the custom orthopedic Serta Sealy memory foam angel cloud mattress he sleeps on, of course.

Pic handed time penalty for the race
Charles Pic has been handed a 20-second time penalty for the Singapore Grand Prix, plus must serve one day’s Community Service for the FIA, for overtaking a car under red flags in final practice.
The Marussia driver was deemed to have moved past another car after passing four sets of red flags that had been brought out following Vitaly Petrov’s accident late in the session.
A statement issued by the FIA race stewards said that it had decided a: “Penalty of 20 seconds to be added to the driver’s race time and in addition the driver and his team engineer to perform 1 day’s Community Service for FIA Action for Road Safety campaign at the instruction of the FIA President.”

High/Low Convertible Comparo: 2013 Chevy Camaro ZL1 vs. 2012 BMW M6
In our world, BMW M6 and Chevy Camaro ZL1 owners buy these cars because they are going to use them. And not just use them, but use every last horsepower and g of capability. We admit that we do not live in the real world. While some owners actually track and race their M6s and ZL1s, many others use them almost exclusively for phallic demonstration. For these buyers, convertibles hold a big advantage. Liberating experiential factors aside, preening is one of the big benefits of convertibles over coupes. People tend to notice cars like an M6 or a ZL1; people tend to notice the driver of the equivalent convertible. READ MORE››

Quaife-Hobbs takes Sonoma pole
Adrian Quaife-Hobbs made it six pole positions from seven Auto GP rounds in 2012 at the final event at Sonoma.
The Super Nova driver, who wrapped up the championship last time out at Curitiba meeting, recorded a fastest time of 1m25.470s.
“Adrian predicted a 1m26.9s pole time on the sim’,” said Super Nova boss David Sears. “And he has beaten that by a long way. We are actually using a much longer circuit than that used by IndyCar, so the cars are closer to IndyCar laptimes than Indy Lights.”
The pace-setter in both of Friday’s practice sessions Russian Sergey Sirotkin was second quickest, 0.468s behind Quaife-Hobbs and the only other man to lap in the 1m25s.
Double Curitiba winner Antonio Pizzonia was third fastest on his maiden outing for Zele Racing. The ex-Formula 1 driver held the top spot with three minutes of the half-hour qualifying session left on the clocks.
But the Brazilian was usurped by first Sirotkin and, with a little over a minute remaining, by British driver Quaife-Hobbs.
Norwegian Pal Varhaug is tasked with maintaining second in the drivers’ standings from Sirotkin this weekend, and ended the morning fourth fastest for Virtuosi UK.
Marrakech winner Sergio Campana completed an all-new line-up for Zele and took fifth. The Italian was keen to erase the memories of a difficult outing for Euronova Racing in Brazil.
“I need to forget the Curitiba meeting, which was a complete nightmare for me,” said Campana. “I really love this track, so I hope to finish the season in a good way.”
Daniel de Jong joined debutant Kotaru Sakurai in being stripped of a lap time for exceeding the track limits, and wound up sixth after encountering a slow-moving Francesco Dracone on a hot lap.
Giacomo Ricci qualified seventh for his third Auto GP outing of the year, ahead of sometime GP2 racer Giancarlo Serenelli.
Britain’s Pippa Mann was 14th for what will be her first race since her huge IndyCar crash at Las Vegas Speedway a year ago. Mann only completed her seat-fitting on Wednesday, and encountered difficulty getting comfortable during Friday practice.

Cub Swanson has sights set on rematch with Jose Aldo
One of the most memorable moments in UFC featherweight Jose Aldo‘s impressive career involved a man who created his own unique highlight at UFC 152, Cub Swanson. The fierce 145ers faced off on June 7, 2009 at WEC 41, though for less than ten seconds as fate would have it after Aldo landed a beautiful flying knee that sent Swanson to the canvas.
Swanson has recently emerged as one of the fighters to keep an eye on at 145 pounds with strike-based stoppages in each of his last three tilts including a fantastic knockout of Charles Oliveira last night. The 28-year old brawler was asked about the possibility of a second showdown with Aldo at the post-event press conference where he expressed extreme openness to the idea.
“I’d love that fight,” Swanson answered enthusiastically. “It hurt to lose like that (in the first bout), just because I felt like the fans were robbed of that fight and I’ll do whatever it takes to get back there.”
Though there is currently a line of competitors waiting for a shot at Aldo including Chan Sung Jung and Frankie Edgar, UFC President Dana White definitely showed interest in the prospect of Swanson scrapping with Aldo at some point based on what he’d shown in Toronto.
“He looked phenomenal tonight,” said White. “In his last fight, he looked amazing. He was awesome tonight; he had one of the craziest knockouts I’ve ever seen. I’m happy for him man. He’s on his way.”

Will MAP-21 Require Thousands More Dangerous Stroads?
An obscure provision of the new federal transportation bill is sparking concerns that it could erode walkability and bikeability in communities around the country. The so-called “Enhanced National Highway System” provision would require all major arterial roads to be folded into the national highway system. That could provide greater pressure for local entities to comply with AASHTO’s often highway-inspired standards, like wide lanes and shoulders that encourage car capacity at the expense of pedestrian safety.
The provision will result in a near doubling of the number of roads that will be part of the national highway system. But what will it mean for livable streets? There are lots of different opinions out there.
Jonathan Maus, at Bike Portland, who broke this story, said:
The significance of these roadways becoming part of the National Highway System is that if PBOT engineers want to make any changes that deviate from FHWA design standards for “principal arterials”, they would have to go through a cumbersome process of applying for exceptions.
In the words of a source at ODOT, “this designation basically forces state and local governments to treat arterials like major highways… Speed will increase, certain designs, like bulb outs, won’t be allowed without an exception. So on and so on.”
Travis Brouwer, senior federal affairs adviser for the Oregon Department of Transportation, echoed those concerns to some extent. Brouwer said the state was racing to reclassify its major arterials, up to 600 miles of road, by October 1, when the new law goes into effect.
