Next coaches for ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ announced

With both the American and British/Australian editions of "The Ultimate Fighter" airing soon, the UFC announced the coaches, and eventual fight pairings, for "The Ultimate Fighter 16" and "The Ultimate Fighter: Smashes."

USA Today reports Roy Nelson and Shane Carwin will coach the show in the U.S., and face off at the show's finale.

"This is going to be a very interesting dynamic between these two heavyweights," UFC president Dana White said. "They both have huge punching power and great chins, but outside of the octagon, they couldn't be any more different."

TUF 16 will air on FX starting in September, and the live finale will be in December. The UFC is returning to a taped season after the 15th season, which showed live fights, failed to give the long-running reality show a much-needed shot in the arm.

Meanwhile, on the new edition of the show, Ross Pearson will coach Team U.K. and George Sotiropoulos the Aussies. The show, named "Smashes" after a cricket rivalry, will air on FX in Australia.

Will you the coaches make you want to tune in? Tell us in the comments, Facebook or Twitter.

Official: BMW HP4 exists to warp time, space, faces

BMW has had a line of HP - for High Performance - motorcycles for seven years, but they have all used the company's signature boxer engine layout. The new HP4, on the other hand, is a 1000-cc class bike using an evolution of the four-cylinder engine from the BMW S 1000 RR sport bike.

A homologation special, the configuration isn't the only first in the HP4's arsenal: it comes standard with an active, electrically-actuated Dynamic Damping Control, a torque-adjusting Launch Control system, and BMW claims its the lightest four-cylinder supersports bike in its class, with a dry weight of 169 kg (371.8 pounds) and 199kg (437.8 pounds) with a 90-percent full tank. Bits like the lightweight, forged wheels, titanium exhaust and lighter sprocket carrier and battery have helped shed the pounds.

The engine cranks out 193 horsepower and 82 foot-pounds, the same numbers as on the S 1000 RR. However, every bit of horsepower is available in all the traction control modes, torque response has been boosted from 6,000 rpm, and the torque delivery curve is smoother when the traction control is in Rain mode. Helping a rider keep it all under control are that Launch Control, a shift assistant for seamless gearchanges, an updated, four-mode Race ABS system, traction control that can be adjusted on the fly, and Brembo monoblock brake calipers.

There's a competition package offered to harden its edge further, and a passenger package if you need to go the other way, but with two. Price hasn't been divulged, but there's a press release below full of the kinds of details that let you know the HP4 won't be a bargain.

Jay Leno with his new 1963.5 Ford Falcon Sprint

Jay Leno owns all kinds of cars: Steam powered, 100-year-old electric and modern-day supercars. His legendary garage is teeming with millions of dollars of iron.

But his dream car has always been the 1963 1/2 Ford Falcon Sprint. So when he saw exactly the car on BringATrailer.com, he plunked down the $26,000 for the mint condition, seriously modified Falcon and sent a trailer.

This Falcon Sprint is built out exactly the way Leno says he would have built it. It has a 1965 289-cubic-inch small block under the hood with 360 horsepower and the battery in the trunk. It has a stiffened suspension, aftermarket wheels and a five-speed manual transmission (the original came with a four-speed). Leno, who says he regularly reads BaT, released a video on his website, Jay Leno's Garage, of his Falcon find, taking the Mustang precursor for a ride around Southern California.

Check out Jay's video below. We particularly like how he shamelessly hugs his new Ford, which is likely going to live a very good life from here on out.

Dave Blaney Gets Solid Finish for Tommy Baldwin Racing at Indy

The No. 36 SealWrap Chevrolet finished in 23rd place

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (July 30, 2012) – Dave Blaney drove the Tommy Baldwin Racing (TBR) No. 36 SealWrap Chevrolet from the 32nd position to finish in 23rd place at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Midway through the race, overheating from grass on the grill caused Blaney to fall a lap down pitting under green, but he drove the SealWrap Chevrolet back onto the lead lap for the checkered flag of the Crown Royal presents the Curtiss Shaver 400 at the Brickyard.

Blaney started in the 32nd position and drove into the 30th spot on lap nine. He radioed the team that the No. 36 SealWrap Chevrolet was loose. By lap 21, he drove into the 28th position and told the crew that the car was getting tight everywhere. He was in the 26th position when Crew Chief Ryan Pemberton called the SealWrap Chevrolet down pit road for the team’s first pit stop. The SealWrap crew changed four tires and made an air pressure and trackbar adjustment.

The No. 36 SealWrap Chevrolet returned to the track in the 29th position, one lap down. A single car accident in turn two brought out the caution on lap 42, and the team elected to stay out to get the wave around. Blaney restarted in the 29th position on lap 46. Two laps later, another single car incident brought out the caution. The SealWrap team elected to pit for four tires and a trackbar adjustment and restarted in the 28th spot on lap 52.

As he raced into the 24th position by lap 70, Blaney radioed that the SealWrap Chevrolet was tight. On lap 73, Pemberton called for the team to make a green-flag pit stop for four tires and a trackbar adjustment. The No. 36 Chevrolet returned to the track in the 32nd position. By lap 80, Blaney radioed that the car was already tight. Pemberton explained that the trackbar wrench broke during the stop so there was no adjustment made.

On lap 95, the No. 13 had an incident in turn two that brought out the caution. The SealWrap team made a four-tire pit stop with a wedge adjustment, and Blaney restarted in 25th place on lap 101. Another car drove into the grass and kicked grass onto the grill of the No. 36 SealWrap Chevrolet forcing Blaney to pit on lap 106. The team cleaned off the grill and topped off the fuel. Blaney returned to the track in the 30th position, one lap down.

Blaney drove into the 28th spot, one lap down, and radioed that the Chevrolet started off really loose but was turning better by lap 116. NASCAR Officials called a caution on lap 126 for debris on the track, and the SealWrap Chevrolet received the lucky dog to return to the lead lap. The crew made a four-tire pit stop and restarted in the 24th position on lap 130.

A four-car incident in turn one brought out the caution on lap 134 with Blaney in the 26th position. Pemberton called for the No. 36 Chevrolet to stay out. The SealWrap Chevrolet restarted in 20th place on lap 140. Blaney fell to the 25th spot on the restart but drove into the 23rd position by lap 154. He held the position for the final six laps and finished the Crown Royal presents the Curtiss Shaver 400 at the Brickyard in 23rd place.

“We had a decent finish today,” Blaney said. “The guys worked on the handling, and it got better throughout the race. By the end, I felt like the car was good, and we made up a few positions at the end. It was a good points day for us and good jumping point for the last half of the season.”

The No. 36 Chevrolet is in the 35th position in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) Owner Points. The team is locked into the top-35 by 86 points and trails the No. 32 by 12 points. Blaney is in 33rd place in NSCS Driver Points. He trails Landon Cassill by 17 points and leads teammate David Reutimann by 13 points.

TBR will head back to Pocono Raceway next weekend for the Pennsylvania 400.

Dave Blaney drove the No. 36 Chevrolet to TBR’s highest finish of third in the October 2011 event at Talladega Superspeedway. TBR also fielded a second car for select races in the past two seasons with multiple drivers.

Based in Mooresville, N.C., TBR will compete in the NSCS in 2012 with NASCAR veterans David Reutimann and Dave Blaney. The team will also compete in the NASCAR Nationwide Series with Ryan Blaney, Bobby Santos and Ryan Truex.

Cesar Gracie: “It’s not about the title. We don’t want a title.”

Manager (and mouthpiece) Cesar Gracie has put to rest rumors that Nick Diaz expressed interest in a meeting with UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva in hopes of receiving a fast-track to a title-shot. According to Gracie, Diaz’s desire doesn’t involve divisional gold but rather an opportunity to prove himself in a huge fight against one of MMA’s truly elite competitors.

“Why Anderson? Because Anderson is a huge a name, and he’s talking the talk that we’re talking about. He’s talking about doing super-fights. He’s talking about fighting outside of his weight. He’s talking about the things that Nick’s been talking about, that Nick did when he was with Strikeforce, that Nick is into…that’s why,” explained Gracie in an interview with MiddleEasy, adding, “And he’s exciting, he’s a great fighter.”

“It’s not about the title. We don’t want a title. It could be at 185 and we don’t want the title,” continued Gracie. “Nick isn’t trying to be disrespectful to other great middleweights out there…this is about fighting, a super-fight.”

Gracie also clarified that the match-up Diaz truly wants is with Georges St-Pierre, but GSP’s forthcoming date with Carlos Condit has essentially ruled the possibility out for at least the immediate future.

Eddie Alvarez meets Patricky "Pitbull" Freire in final contracted Bellator bout on October 15

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Eddie_Alvarez_180_3.JPG
Eddie Alvarez's final contracted fight for Bellator Fighting Championships is set, as he'll take on former Bellator tournament finalist Patricky "Pitbull" Freire on October 12 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney announced the matchup on Twitter on Monday.

Alvarez, who has been with Bellator from their very first event, lost his Bellator Lightweight Championship to Michael Chandler in an epic fight last November, snapping a seven fight winning streak over two years in the organization. He bounced back with a vengeance in April, destroying Shinya Aoki in a rematch of one of his two other losses.

After that bout, Alvarez was left with one fight on his current Bellator deal. He had an option to simply let it expire, though it would have held him out of action considerably longer. Following this bout, he'll become a free agent, and will look to entertain a deal with the UFC; Bellator will have the right to match any offer for a short period of time, but much like with Hector Lombard that may not be realistic for them.

He'll have to get past Freire first, though, and that's no easy task. Freire was defeated by Chandler in the finals of Bellator's fourth season lightweight tournament, dropping a decision to the man who would become Champion. He bounced back with a first round knockout of UFC veteran Kurt Pellegrino, but was shockingly submitted in an upset loss to Lloyd Woodard this March in the opening round of Bellator's sixth season lightweight tournament.

Penick's Analysis: This should be a great fight, and if Alvarez can get past a tough opponent in "Pitbull," he may finally get a chance to prove himself on the biggest stage. He had his moments in the Chandler fight, to the point where he nearly finished it on numerous occasions, but he ultimately fell short. He's still one of the most talented fighters in the division, and a move to the UFC would give him the opportunity to prove where he belongs in the 155 lb. hierarchy. This is going to be a big opportunity for Freire as well, as the Woodard result was very surprising, and this could allow him to bounce back in a huge way.

Button baffled by strategy switch

Jenson Button, McLarenJenson Button says he does not understand McLaren’s strategy switch, particularly after twice being asked to pit early and exiting into traffic as a consequence in Hungary.

McLaren opted to switch the Briton onto a three-stop strategy partway through the race as he was running a close third behind team-mate Lewis Hamilton and Lotus’s Romain Grosjean.

Exiting into traffic killed the Briton’s hopes however and ultimately caused him to slide down to sixth at the chequered flag.

Button said his tyres were still in working condition when he made his last two stops, and therefore couldn’t understand the team’s strategy call.

“I don’t know what was going on there really,” Button admitted. “The weird thing was after the first stop I could still see the leaders so it was close, but we decided to go for a three stop and we were stopping early, and both times I came out in traffic and wondered why.

“The tyres were still in good condition and I think they were trying to jump the cars in front but we went straight back into traffic and that was it. Normally you pit and come out into clean air.

“Then we did that again later on in the race, so not a great race. Hopefully we will learn from this because it happened twice – I don’t think we looked too good on strategy today.”

Button said his confusion was compounded by the fact he was not struggling for tyre wear but was still asked to pit early.

“I don’t know why we pitted so early each time when the tyres were still in good condition,” he explained. “I said to the guys ‘Is this traffic quicker than the guys we are racing?’, and they said ‘no’…

“I didn’t really think it was [a tough race on tyres] but the team obviously did. I wasn’t going slow but we pitted early twice and it put me straight into traffic, which made it very difficult to race those guys. Obviously it was a slight misunderstanding of positioning on circuit. Every time I stopped it just got worse and worse.”

Alistair Overeem says he doesn't need warm-up fight, but ready for any opponent in UFC return

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

OvereemAlistair_180_43.jpg
Alistair Overeem's license denial this year was supposed to serve as a punishment for using a drug containing testosterone without any approval from the commission. Instead, Overeem has seemingly relished the forced time off, and he reiterated that point this week in an interview with MMAWeekly.com.

"This time off is perfect," Overeem said. "After this, I have a full four years of dedication [to fighting]. For me it doesn't matter when I fight. I don't need to have a warm-up fight. I'm going to leave that up to the gentlemen of the UFC to decide. If they want me to go for the title, I'm ready for that."

Overeem is leaving himself open for any matchup from the UFC, and indeed the timing likely won't work for him to get an immediate title shot, but that doesn't change his thoughts on what will happen when he does get to face Champ Junior dos Santos.

"I'm going to lay low and fight whoever they put in front of me," Overeem said. "I'm going to get my hands on [Dos Santos] and when I do, he's all mine."

Penick's Analysis: The license denial has been nothing more than an inconvenience for the UFC at this point. Overeem's moving ahead as if there was no wrong-doing at all, and he's treating this as a time just to get better. He's going to return in full force, and whether it's a title fight or not he'll be expected to have a big performance. He clearly feels he'll have an advantage over anyone he'll face, and it seems like many, including the UFC, are going to be welcoming him back as if nothing happened.

Hamlin claims Brickyard pole

Denny Hamlin, Joe Gibbs Toyota, Indianapolis 2012Denny Hamlin claimed his second NASCAR Sprint Cup pole position of the season in qualifying for Sunday’s Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver set a laptime of 49.244 seconds at an average speed of 182.793 mph, which beat the previous benchmark set by his team-mate Joey Logano.

Roush Fenway Racing’s Carl Edwards, who enters the weekend with a new crew chief, came closest to beating Hamlin and will start from the front row of the grid.

“It’s been a good day,” said Hamlin. “We started off today not where we wanted to be speed-wise and car handling but we identified the problem with our car… It looked like [it] picked up speed and obviously it was a great qualifying lap.

“This is a great start to our weekend, knowing that we have the number one pit-stall, we have obviously a fast car and I have a great pit crew that’s going to hopefully keep me up front all day.

“If you put me out front for the last run no one’s going to get around me, I don’t think.”

Logano and Richard Petty’s Aric Almirola made it a combination of Toyota and Ford in the first two rows of the grid, followed by Edwards’ team-mate Greg Biffle, and the fastest Chevrolet of three-time Brickyard 400 winner Jimmie Johnson.

Kyle Busch was seventh, making it three Gibbs Toyotas among the top 10, followed by last year’s event winner Paul Menard, four-time Brickyard winner Jeff Gordon and points leader Matt Kenseth.

Hendrick’s Kasey Kahne had set the benchmark in practice with the fastest lap of the weekend during the opening session, but he had a disappointing qualifying and will only line up 15th in the order.

Brad Keselowski and former Indianapolis 500 winner Sam Hornish Jr were 22nd and 24th in the Penske Dodges respectively.

Wood Brothers’ Trevor Bayne was the best of the non-guaranteed drivers in 18th, while Reed Sorenson and Joe Nemechek failed to make the cut on speed.

Michael McDowell had been fast enough in qualifying to make the grid but his car failed post-qualifying inspection and thus missed his spot in the race, giving his place to Mike Bliss.

A Look at Anderson Silva's Record UFC Win Streak

Quote:

Jul 28, 2012 - If there is one thing we know about combat sports athletes, it is that time tends to catch up with them quickly. The wear and tear on muscles and joints, the nagging injuries, the grueling training camps, they all take their toll on the body and combine to rob fighters of their explosiveness, their speed and sometimes, their desire. And in a game of milliseconds, that is sometimes enough to make all the difference between victory and defeat.

In 2011, mixed martial arts writer David Williams did an extensive study aimed at examining fighters' careers and their performance drop-offs. And what he found after examing the career spans of over 300 of them was that the steepest drop in performance comes after nine years of professional action. His theory -- dubbed "The 9-Year Rule" -- noted major fighters including Chuck Liddell, Fedor Emelianenko and Takanori Gomi as examples, but reported that across the board, the 9-Year Rule seems to apply with a handful of exceptions.

One of those is Anderson Silva. His most recent win over Chael Sonnen was just days after the 15th anniversary of his MMA debut. Now 37 years old, he is one of MMA's elder statesmen, and he is also an anomaly. In a young man's game, Silva is the second-oldest fighter ranked among the top 10 in any division (only 41-year-old Dan Henderson is older). And each time he fights, his unmatched record of success continues to grow.

Here is a look at his memorable UFC streak.

The Records

Most Consecutive Wins
1. Anderson Silva - 15
2. Royce Gracie - 11
Gracie's streak started at UFC 1 when Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was practically a family secret, giving him a sort of built-in advantage in fight competition. Still, he had to win 11 fights over four events to set the record, one that would last for nearly 16 years. Ironically, the match in which Silva broke the record is undoubtedly his all-time legacy bout: his August 2010 fifth-round submission win over Sonnen.

Most Wins In Title Fights
1. Anderson Silva 11-0
2. Georges St-Pierre 9-2
When you argue the places of Silva and St-Pierre in the pound-for-pound debate, this is where Silva gets a leg up. Not only because he's unbeaten, but also because both of St-Pierre's losses are via first-round stoppage. Silva's never been afraid of the big moments, and it's shown in his performance. It's also interesting to note that St-Pierre's last fight against Jake Shields was his first after his nine-year anniversary, and since then, he's been set back by injuries.

Consecutive Title Defenses
1. Anderson Silva - 10
2. Georges St-Pierre - 6
St-Pierre's streak is still active, so it's possible that one day he breaks Silva's record, but as noted, he's had trouble staying healthy. Silva's total of 11 straight defenses is just one less than the second and third longest streaks put together, as Matt Hughes is just behind St-Pierre with five.

Longest Title Reign
1. Anderson Silva - 2,114 days
2. Georges St-Pierre - 1,561 days
Of note, Silva has had the middleweight championship in his possession more than twice as long as all four of the previous divisional title holders put together. Dave Menne (105 days), Murilo Bustamante (267), Evan Tanner (119) and Rich Franklin (497) held it for a combined 958 days before Silva won the belt from Franklin. In addition, by the time St-Pierre defends his belt in November, he will have been inactive for 568 days, nearly one-third of his reign. By contrast, Silva has fought twice a year every year since he won the belt, though it is currently unknown whether he will get a second fight in 2012.

Significant Strike Accuracy
1. Anderson Silva - 67.6%
2. Cain Velasquez - 60.2%
There's no greater evidence of Silva's sniper-like striking than this stat, which has him ahead of one of the UFC's great ground-and-pound artists. Silva's pinpoint accuracy is as much responsible for his knockdowns and dominance as his power.

Knockdowns Landed
1. Anderson Silva - 16
2. Chuck Liddell - 14
What's amazing about this stat is that Silva averages more than one knockdown per fight. His 16 knockdowns come in 15 fights while Liddell, who is thought of as one of the hardest punchers in UFC history, needed 23 fights to get 14 knockdowns. In UFC history, 25 fighters have competed in the octagon more than Silva, yet he stands alone.

The Opponents
Even after Silva retires, the debate about whether he reigned over a weak division or was simply that much better than anyone else will probably live on. But the objective evidence showed that he certainly fought worthy opposition most of the time.

Most telling of his talent is his record of success against men who held titles in major organizations at some point of their careers. Against those opponents (Franklin twice, Dan Henderson, Forrest Griffin, Vitor Belfort and Nate Marquardt), Silva was 6-0 with 5 knockouts and 1 submission. Four of those fights were finished in the first round, and none of the six made it past the second.

Prior to facing Silva, his opponents had a combined record of 283 wins, 68 losses, 4 draws and 3 no contest, for a winning percentage of .803. Given that, there's no question that Silva faced a series of winners. And he largely dominated them.

It's not just that he won; it's how he did it. In eight of his 15 fights, he landed more than double the strikes of his opponent. Four times, opponents failed to land even 10 strikes against him. Think about that for a second, the level of supremacy needed to completely shut down an attack. Although James Irvin was far from his toughest opponent, Silva might have had his perfect fight against him. Why? Irvin landed no strikes. Zero. Leben did a little better, hitting Silva a single time. Griffin managed just four landed strikes. Belfort had six. Sonnen has been the only one to out-strike him in a fight, though he did it on two occasions.

The Legacy
Silva's career is boosted by the fact that he chose to go up in weight twice to fight light-heavyweights. The first fight came against Irvin, a big puncher who proved to be a fairly mediocre divisional talent at the UFC level. But in his second 205-pound fight, he faced Forrest Griffin, who was just coming off losing his title to Rashad Evans. Just prior to that, Griffin had beaten Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua consecutively, so there seemed to be true danger for Silva in the bout. Yet both of his outings at light-heavyweight proved to be whitewashings. Silva needed just 61 seconds to knockout Irvin, and took just 3:23 to embarrass Griffin.

For sure, his legacy fight is the first bout with Sonnen, a fight in which he survived a beating for almost four rounds until locking him in a stunning, fight-ending triangle/armbar. Finally, he had his character tested, and his reign in jeopardy, and he still refused to succumb to the moment and his opponent's momentum. While that is the moment that crystallized that his heart was of the same championship-level as his talent, Silva will be remembered for many of the moments he authored. His violent clinch work against Franklin. The way he viciously choked out Henderson. His clowning of Griffin. His dramatic submission against Sonnen. His front kick knockout of hated rival Belfort.

MMA is still a young sport, but we know from a small sample size that it is so multi-textured that losing is nearly an inevitability. That it is so physically demanding that primes come and go in a blink. But neither has held true for Silva, an exception to all of the rules. No one has ever done it better in the octagon, and at 37, The Spider may still have webs to weave.
We know Silva is dominant, but some of those stats are just incredible. I don't think his competition has been weak, he's just that good. 6-0 against champions, all stoppages before the third round...

Korbin Forrister’s Respectable Run Sidelined Late At Lucas Oil Raceway

Korbin Forrister
Korbin Forrister
CLERMONT, Indiana (July 29, 2012) – - Korbin Forrister’s (@korbinforrister) headed into Friday night’s Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 200 by Federated Car Care at Lucas Oil Raceway with the goal and intentions of completing all 200 laps. However, his goal would be shattered just eight laps from the finish.

After adapting to the heavier stock-cars through a series of start-and-parks, Forrister would be handed the wheel of the No. 68 Tilted Kilt Ford Fusion to have a shot at enhancing his learning curve even more at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.

With former ARCA champion crew chief and car owner Bill Kimmel calling the shots for the 19-year old, the duo would bond together to find a comfortable setup for the rookie.

Despite battling Mother Nature during the two practice sessions, Forrister was able to embrace critical track time to help become familiar with the track’s unique .686-mile oval. In happy hour, the final practice run before qualifying, Forrister mounted 27th overall in a very competitive field after turning a lap of 23.508 seconds at 105.054 miles per hour, three tenths of a second faster than their previous run earlier in the day.

In qualifying, a bobble by the driver of the No. 68 Tilted Kilt Ford Fusion forced a lap of 23.804 seconds transferring to a speed of 103.747 miles per hour. The lap was 30th quickest overall but the Cedartown, Georgia native lined up 29th for his inaugural run at the historic short track.

At the start of the 200-lap event, Forrister raced the racetrack – gunning for each position available. Hovering inside the top-25 for a majority of the first-half of the 200 lap event, Forrister’s tasks of finishing the race looked feasible.

It was evident that the driver’s comfort zone with the track during the second-half of the race, his lap times improved considerably and he began fighting for positions with his competition on the same circuit of his No. 68 Tilted Kilt Ford Fusion.

With the driver pleased with the overall handling of his automobile and running in the top-20 inside the race’s final 15 laps of the 13th race of the year – it appeared that the Limited Late Model (LLM) pro would emerge from the Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 200 by Federated Car Care unscathed. Unfortunately, with eight laps remaining and running with another lapped car, a hungry pack of lead laps cars closed in on them and contact was made in the group sending the No. 68 Tilted Kilt Ford Fusion around on the frontstretch and hard into the inside retaining wall. The damage would ultimately end the team’ night resulting in a 24th place run.

“I learned an awful lot,” offered Forrister. “I wish we would have had the opportunity to test, but this Kimmel Racing team gave me everything I asked for and more. I wish I could have become more comfortable with the higher groove earlier in the race – because the car was really fast once I figured the track out. Unfortunately, by then we were too far behind. I’m also real sorry to the guys for bringing our Tilted Kilt Ford home damaged. I was in a pack with the leaders and lapped cars and there was contact and I went spinning towards the wall. It’s just a shame, because I was just hoping to see the checkered flag and bring these guys home a respectable finish. I guess it was just one of those racing deals. I just want to thank Bill (Kimmel), Will (Kimmel), the guys and Tilted Kilt for making this opportunity possible.”

Kimmel offered his thoughts on his development driver’s performance at LOR. “Korbin definitely made some huge strides from practice to the race and we’re extremely proud of him for that,” he said. “It was a tough field, there’s no hiding that. This was just another opportunity for Korbin to acquire more seat time, learn more about these cars and earn respect from his competitors. The ending didn’t turn out like we wanted too, but sometimes that’s just it goes. He’ll be back at Springfield and we’ll hope for a strong showing there.”

In addition to Indianapolis, Forrister will drive for Kimmel Racing in upcoming events at the Illinois State Fairgrounds (August 19) and the DuQuoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds (September 3).

Next up for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards is a return trip to Pocono (Pa.) Raceway for the running of the Pennsylvania ARCA 125 in a double-header combo with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) at the 2.5-mile triangle. The 14th race of the year will air live on SPEED beginning at 3:00 p.m. Eastern.

Michael Bisping fires back at Chris Weidman for recent remarks

As one of the few middleweights left in division without an upcoming bout scheduled, and as an unbeaten competitor, Chris Weidman believes he is the top contender to face UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.

Michael Bisping, meanwhile, is slated to face Brian Stann at UFC 152 this September. The match-up has plenty of importance, as both believe they can become a challenger to Silva with a victory in tow.

However, Weidman recently made some comments regarding Bisping that seemed to tick the Brit off a bit, saying in an interview with Fighters Only Magazine, “I think he’s a really great fighter, I really do, but I question his mentality against top guys when the pressure is on.”

As a result, “The Count” fired back at Weidman, saying “Chris the Wiesel Weidman saying I fold under pressure. Hahahahaha I needed a good laugh this morning.”

Bisping will have his hands full with Stann, but there’s no question it would be an interesting outing to see the Brit paired up with Weidman down the road.

Nick Diaz, Anderson Silva, Travis Browne and Invicta FC: The Morning News Roundup – 7.27.12

Howdy. I'm Jim Genia. You might recognize me from such great literary works as "I, Armbar" and "Tito Ortiz's Head: Friend or Foe?" While Maggie Hendricks is covering some sort of athletic event called the "Olympics", I'll be filling in here at Cagewriter.  Yes, it's a temp job, but please think of me as that really cool substitute teacher you had in high school, the one who said nothing when you disrupted class and set fire to the lab, yet did not hesitate to plant drugs in your locker and call the police.  Heh.  Anyway, here's some news to start your day:

  • Cesar Gracie, coach to the ultra-talented UFC top welterweight contender Nick Diaz, tweeted that there will be an announcement on Graciefighter regarding Diaz's career today at 4:00 p.m. (PST).  If you'll recall, Nick Diaz... yeesh.  The big question mark these past few months has been whether Diaz has truly retired or if he'll get in the cage once more.  Therefore, we can expect Gracie's announcement to be one of the following: "Nick Diaz is not going to fight again", "Nick Diaz is going to fight again", and "Can someone tell Nick Diaz to call home?  No one's heard from him in a while and everyone's pretty worried about him."  Stay tuned!

  • According to ESPN, UFC middleweight champ and untouchable superstar Anderson Silva wants to fight UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre next.

Of much more interest to Silva are the blockbuster fights that can earn him big money as he nears the end of his career. St-Pierre v Silva undoubtedly would make the biggest Pay-Per-View in UFC history, but while Guimaraes says Silva wants the fight, he admits it has not been offered.

Of course Silva would like St. Pierre in a big-money superfight next.  Who would you rather fight?  A welterweight champ whose knee could explode at any time, or UFC light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones, who sports an eleven-foot reach and has murdered everyone put in front of him?  Silva is no dummy.

  • Just yesterday Travis Browne was sad.  Ben Rothwell, who was to be his opponent at next week's UFC on FOX 4, fell prey to the injury bug, and Browne was without a dance partner.  He was subsequently booted from the card.  But it's a new day, and with this new day comes the news (courtesy of the good folks at MMAJunkie) that Browne will now headline UFC on FX 5 in October, facing off against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.  Hooray!  If you'll recall, Browne is big and dangerous and beats people silly - and being big and dangerous and beating people silly is good for main events.

  • There may be no offerings from the UFC, Strikeforce or Bellator this weekend, but that doesn't mean there isn't a way to get your MMA fix.  Invicta Fighting Championships, the all-female MMA promotion, will be having their second installment in Kansas City, KS, and the event will be broadcast for free on their website.  Here's a video promo courtesy of MMAFighting.  There are some extremely skilled and capable female MMA fighters out there, and a bunch of them are on Saturday night's card.

That's all for now.  Now excuse me while I go plant drugs in your locker.

Nate Marquardt, Luke Rockhold big winners at Strikeforce

Strikeforce crowned a new champion and held onto another during Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy on Saturday night in Portland.

Former UFC contender Nate Marquardt won the vacant Strikeforce welterweight championship with a knockout of Tyron Woodley. Marquardt controlled the stand-up for the first two rounds and held off Woodley's takedown attempts.

In the third round, Woodley knocked Marquardt down, but couldn't finish him immediately. While Woodley was still working on the ground, the referee stood them up. Marquardt made his move in the fourth, hitting Woodley with three upper cuts that knocked Woodley out for the first time in his career.

Luke Rockhold held onto the Strikeforce middleweight belt with a grinding, five-round decision. Rockhold held off Kennedy's submission attempts and avoided being takedown. He also landed more strikes. According to CompuStrike, Rockhold landed 34 power strikes while Kennedy only landed 16.

The judges saw it 49-46 on all three cards for Rockhold, moving his record to 10-1.

Raikkonen still aiming for strong race

Kimi Raikkonen, LotusKimi Raikkonen sees no reason why he cannot still deliver a good result in the Hungarian Grand Prix – despite failing to capitalise on the speed of his Lotus in Q3.

The Finn ended up fifth on the grid at the Hungaroring, with team-mate Romain Grosjean securing a spot on the front row, after finding himself unable to extract the maximum performance from his car in the final qualifying session

“We expected a bit more, the car has been good all weekend, but it was a bit more difficult in the last qualifying,” explained Raikkonen. “I would rather be higher up, but that is how it goes.”

Despite having hoped to be higher up the grid, Raikkonen thinks Lotus’ history of delivering good race pace means he can still produce a decent result in the race.

“Usually our pace on Sunday is good, and I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be here,” he said.

“It was not a perfect qualifying but it is still a good place to start the race. You make your life a bit more difficult when you don’t make a good qualifying.”

Report: Will Ford turn to aluminum for body of next F-150? Maybe.

2013 Ford F-150 - silver - front three-quarter view

According to The Wall Street Journal, Ford intends to utilize aluminum for the body of its next-generation F-150. In order to meet tightening fuel economy regulations, the WSJ says Ford will turn to the lightweight material, which could cut curb weight by a whopping 700 pounds. Working in tandem with more efficient powertrains, that weight loss could result in a whopping 25-percent boost in fuel economy.

But not so fast, suggests spokesman Said Deep. In regards to the reported aluminumization of the F-Series, Deep tells The Detroit News that "It is premature to discuss specific approaches or solutions that we might use for future product," a quote, we note, that is not necessarily an outright denial.

Industry analyst Jim Hall of 2953 Analytics points out that while some F-150 components are already aluminum, it is also a tougher material to work with. "Full-aluminum structured vehicles are much more expensive to insure because they are much more expensive to repair." Not only that, Hall notes, but not every body shop knows how to work with aluminum. Thus, it's unsurprising to learn that the original WSJ report suggests only that the next F-150's bodywork may be rendered in aluminum, not the chassis.

While there may be manufacturing hurdles in switching over to aluminum, perhaps more difficult will be determining its impact on sales. The F-150 is one of the industry's perennial best-selling vehicles, and it's uncertain how diehard truck buyers might react to a move away from steel, particularly if it sends costs upwards. Of course, Ford recently took on another pickup buyer taboo and registered a resounding victory - challenging the long-held notion that full-size buyers won't buy anything other than a V8 in real volume.

75 for Kimmel: Veteran Ends Long ARCA Winless Streak in Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 200 at Indianapolis

Frank Kimmel Wins The Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 200 presented by Federated Car Care at Lucas Oil Raceway (Photo Credit: Automobile Racing Club of America)
(INDIANAPOLIS) - Never before in his ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards career had Frank Kimmel endured such a long winless streak. Race after race since September 2008, the nine-time ARCA champion had fallen short – until tonight’s Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 200 presented by Federated Car Care at Lucas Oil Raceway.

Kimmel (No. 44 Ansell/Menards Toyota) led the final 43 laps on the Indianapolis short track to win for the first time in the last 76 ARCA Racing Series events. His victory was his first since a win at Salem Speedway nearly four full seasons ago.

“It’s hard to get here some times,” said Kimmel, who started seventh. “I’ve got to thank this team and sponsors Ansell and Menards. I’d like to take a lot of that credit but we had a good handling race car. I could turn and cut into traffic and run into the flat, whatever I needed at the end. That made the difference. This is a hard place to drive around and a really hard place to pass people. That’s what makes it special.”

Kimmel’s 75 wins have come on 27 different tracks. Kimmel had never won at Lucas Oil Raceway.

Tom Hessert (No. 52 Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet) made a late charge for second, and Kevin Swindell (No. 66 Curb Records Toyota) was strong for the second straight week, following his victory at Chicagoland with a third-place finish.

Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell winner Matt Crafton (No. 88 Messina Wildlife Management / Menards Toyota) led the first 20 laps easily, building his lead to 5.108 seconds before Alex Bowman crashed in Turn 1. Crafton, a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series veteran, led the field to the green flag at Lap 26 with Chad Hackenbracht and Mason Mitchell battling for second behind him.

Crafton built his lead to over a second within several laps while Kimmel battled his way into the top five by running on the bottom groove against Matt Lofton (No. 16 Strutmasters.com Chevrolet) and Mason Mingus (No. 32 Call 811 Before You Dig Chevrolet). Crafton, like Kimmel in a ThorSport Racing entry, continued to lead, even after a close call with two lapped cars as he finished Lap 42.

Crafton’s dominant run would not be for long, though. He lost control of his car after a mechanical problem as he closed Lap 51, and slammed the wall in Turns 1 and 2 to lose the lead to Hackenbracht. Crafton’s day was done, forcing another substandard finish at Lucas Oil for the veteran. He finished 31st, one spot ahead of his result at Lucas Oil in 2011.

Swindell led off of pit road, but it was Hackenbracht who was taking control and seemed a likely candidate for a first career victory. After passing Mitchell (No. 6 J&S Ag Services/Make-A-Wish Foundation Chevrolet) – who had beaten him on pit road after the Crafton caution – right away, he started to look inside Swindell for first. Hackenbracht took the lead on Lap 62, and Mitchell and Kimmel passed Swindell for the top three positions.

Hackenbracht led at Lap 100, the race’s halfway point, but that was not easy. Heavy traffic at Lap 91 allowed Mitchell to challenge for the lead and gave Kimmel a chance to close to within one second. Chris Buescher (No. 17 Reliance Tool / Roulo Brothers Racing Ford) was fourth, about four seconds behind.

Jared Marks crashed into the Turn 3 wall while on the tail end of the lead lap, just as Hackenbracht, Mitchell, and Kimmel approached on Lap 107. Brennan Poole, Ryan Reed, Chad Boat, and Swindell pitted, while Hackenbracht, Mitchell, and Kimmel continued to lead. Hackenbracht drove out to a big lead on the Lap 114 restart, but Mitchell and Kimmel kept it close the next lap around.

Mitchell looked inside Hackenbracht on Lap 129, but Hackenbracht kept the lead. The drivers were three-wide on Lap 132, just at the same time as Swindell made contact with Mason Mingus in fourth, a true sign that action was clearly heating up.

Kimmel passed Mitchell for second on Lap 134, just before another caution flag flew. Hackenbracht won the race off of pit road to start Lap 136, with Kimmel just edging Mitchell out. Swindell drove off fourth.

Having pitted at Lap 109, Boat (No. 98 Curb Records Chevrolet) led the race on Lap 136. Behind him was Poole, another early pitter. Hackenbracht advanced to second on the Lap 140, the first lap of green flag action. By Turn 2 the next lap, he led over Kimmel and Mitchell. Kimmel looked inside for the lead on Lap 142, forcing another three-wide situation, but Hackenbracht continued to lead. He was side-by-side with Kimmel for half of a lap until continuing to lead out of Turn 2. All the while, Kimmel kept looking inside.

But when Kimmel could not advance to the lead, he lost some ground. Mitchell actually took second on Lap 150 and grabbed the lead on the next lap. Engine issues forced Hackenbracht out of contention on Lap 156 and left the door wide open for a recovering Kimmel to attack Mitchell’s lead. He took the first position on Lap 158, just laps before Boat crashed to bring out another caution.

Kimmel got off to a good start at the Lap 167 green flag. Poole (No. 25 Country Music Artist Buddy Jewell Chevrolet) advanced to second with about 25 laps to go and seemed to be on his way to passing Kimmel for his third victory of 2012. Mitchell passed him to start Lap 191, though, and Kimmel continued to move away.

Korbin Forrister spun on the frontstretch with eight laps to go, an incident that would bunch up the field for a final three-lap run to the green flag. Mitchell lost momentum on the restart from second place, and no other driver had anything for Kimmel after the Lap 198 restart. The Clarksville, Ind. driver took off for a 0.886-second win.

Below Kimmel, Hessert, and Swindell, Poole finished fourth and Mitchell fifth. Reed (No. 15 RaceHard.com Toyota) was sixth, Buescher was seventh, and Boat was eighth. Spencer Gallagher (No. 23 Allegiant Air Chevrolet) ended the night ninth and Mingus completed the top 10.

The race lasted one hour, 38 minutes, and 16 seconds, finishing with an average speed of 83.772 mph. Six caution flags slowed the race over 37 laps.
