Sam Hornish will remain in the NASCAR’s Nationwide Series for the foreseeable future, although team boss Roger Penske says he is still earmarked for further Sprint Cup opportunities as they become available.
The three-time IndyCar champion spent three years with Penske’s Sprint Cup team before dropping back to Nationwide for the 2011 season, since which he has made seven Cup starts.
He enjoying the best start of his Nationwide career this year with three wins from the past five races, but Penske said that there were no plans to rush him back to NASCAR’s top tier yet.
“I have a plan with Sam right now clearly focusing on running Nationwide,” Penske said.
“He’ll run one or two Cup races because we have a sponsor.
“[But] the plan is to run for the Nationwide championship, and then if the sponsorship is available it’s a chance to move up the Cup.”
