Will Resume His Previously Scheduled Events After Subbing for Denny Hamlin at Martinsville

CORNELIUS, N.C. - Michael Waltrip Racing announced today that Mark Martin will fill in for injured Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin in the No. 11 Toyota Camry next weekend at Martinsville Speedway.

Martin will return to the No. 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota Camry at Texas Motor Speedway on April 13 and resume his previously scheduled run of events with MWR for the remainder of the 2013 NASCAR Sprint cup season.

“I think it is great that a driver of Mark’s caliber is available to support our fellow Toyota team during this difficult time for them. We wish Denny a speedy recovery” said MWR founder and co-owner Michael Waltrip. ”Mark is a big part of our organization and is committed to our sponsors, especially Aaron’s and Toyota. We have a lot of goals yet to reach this year and we are very focused on accomplishing them.”

As previously announced, Brian Vickers will race MWR’s No. 55 Jet Edge Toyota Camry for MWR at Martinsville.

Ford recalling select Taurus, Explorer and Lincoln MKS models over fuel tanks

2013 Ford Explorer Sport

Ford is recalling certain 2012 Taurus, 2013 Explorer and 2012 Lincoln MKS models over fuel tank concerns. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, vehicles built between July 19, 2011 and March 15, 2012 may have been built with fuel tanks that have a "marginally sealed seam" on the side. Those seams may not provide the strength necessary to protect the tank from rupture during a collision. They may also leak. The recall covers a total of 3,037 vehicles. NHTSA says that leaked fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, could easily cause a fire.

Dealers will inspect the tanks and replace them as need be free of charge. Owners can expect to be notified once the campaign begins on or around April 22, 2013. You can read the full NHTSA recall notice below for more information.

Hansen claims early Lydden lead

Timmy Hansen rallycross LyddenTimmy Hansen heads the order after the opening two heats of the first round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship at Lydden.

The young Swede, starting only his third supercar race, went fastest in both the first and second heats to earn first place overall.

His team-mate and reigning champion Timur Timerzyanov sits second.

Rallycross: the best-kept secret in motorsport?

2003 World Rally Champion Petter Solberg, who completed the first shakedown of his Citroen DS3 just days before the event, struggled in his first heat but then triumphed in his second.

Clutch problems led to the Norwegian first jumping the start and then suffering a poor getaway in his opener. He then touched a barrier on Chessons Drift, causing damage to the rear of his car, and compounded his problems by forgetting to take the joker lap.

He made amends by winning his second heat, in which he also set the second fastest time. He lies ninth overall heading into the final day.

“We still had all the issues from heat one, I just managed them better,” Solberg said following his win.

“The rear of the car was still damaged; we didn’t have time to fix it. I’m pretty disappointed but that’s life.”

British driver Liam Doran, also driving a brand new DS3 at Lydden, ended the opening day in sixth overall, two places higher than current British champion Julian Godfrey.

Sixteen-year-old Kevin Eriksson meanwhile tops the Super1600 category on his rallycross debut after finishing second and then fastest in his respective heats.

The final qualifying heats take place tomorrow morning ahead of the semi-finals and final in the afternoon.

Loeb to advise Kubica on WRC debut

Robert KubicaNine-time World Rally champion Sebastien Loeb will be on hand to help Robert Kubica with his gravel and WRC debut in a Citroen DS3 RRC on next month’s Rally of Portugal.

The Polish driver stunned the sport with his first asphalt outing in the DS3 on last week’s Canaries Rally, but his WRC2 debut in Portugal is expected to be more complicated for the former Canadian Grand Prix winner.

Kubica’s gravel experience is limited to just 40 miles in one of his own Group N cars and, while he will test his DS3 ahead of the Faro event, Citroen team principal Yves Matton expects him to have questions.

AUTOSPORT opinion: Kubica is the real deal on the stages

Loeb and current Citroen team leader Mikko Hirvonen will therefore be available to support Kubica.

“When he does his first laps on gravel, he will have a lot of questions,” Matton said.

“And Seb and Mikko have done so many kilometres on gravel – and they have different driving styles – so I will not say all the answers will be there, but a lot of answers will be there and he can win a lot of time like this.

“But first he has to do a couple of kilometres just to understand.”

Kubica admitted himself that gravel will pose a completely different challenge for him.

“In my life,” Kubica said, “I have not done much on gravel and this will be a big challenge and big fun.”

In addition to the test, Kubica will contest the Fafe Rallysprint, now a traditional warm-up for the Portuguese WRC round, on April 6.

Updated Bike-Share Map Appears to Show Phased Rollout Plan

The initial bike-share service area will include the stations in blue, with stations in gray slated to come online later in 2013. Image: DOT

We’ve known since December that Hurricane Sandy shrank the initial rollout of bike-share from 420 stations to 293, with an expansion promised by the end of 2013. We also knew that this meant the service area would, at first, not include Long Island City and parts of north Brooklyn. We just didn’t know exactly where.

Now, an updated bike-share map (via reader @J_uptown) on DOT’s website shows that the initial rollout will encompass Manhattan south of Central Park and an area of Brooklyn bounded roughly by Atlantic Avenue, Nostrand Avenue, Flushing Avenue, and the East River. The second phase will include LIC, Greenpoint, Williamsburg, and Bedford Stuyvesant east of Nostrand Avenue. Three stations in Manhattan, at Pier 42, on 60th Street near First Avenue, and on Fifth Avenue at 63rd Street, are also part of the second phase.

Site selection for a third phase, which would bring the system up to the original goal of 10,000 bikes at 600 stations, is still in progress, according to the DOT site, and would include Manhattan up to 79th Street, Sunnyside in Queens, and Cobble Hill, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, and Crown Heights south of Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. Those stations aren’t expected to be added this year, judging by DOT’s December announcement.

At a City Council transportation committee meeting earlier this month, DOT staff said that rollout is scheduled for the spring. DOT has told community boards to expect to see stations on the street beginning sometime in April (launch isn’t expected before May — it takes a few weeks to set up all the stations), and some are already appearing ready for deployment.

Spies expecting to struggle in Qatar

Ben SpiesBen Spies admits he expects to struggle in next weekend’s MotoGP season-opener in Qatar after a pre-season hit by injuries and poor weather.

The American switched from the works Yamaha squad to Ducati’s satellite Pramac operation for 2013, but missed the early tests as a result of the injuries sustained in last year’s Sepang Grand Prix.

He subsequently aggravated those injuries – which included an AC shoulder separation and bruised lung – with a fall in testing at the Malaysian track.

While Spies says his shoulder is no longer a cause for concern, he admits he has not been able to dial in to the Ducati during pre-season and is expecting to struggle early on as a result.

He was more than two seconds off the pace on the penultimate day at Jerez

“The shoulder is actually improving quite a bit, didn’t struggle at all with that,” Spies reported.

“It was kind of a big relief, but we were a little but slower than we wanted to be.

“I had a decent lap on my timer [that] put me with all the Ducatis but we’re still too far away from where we want to be.

“I just need to change the bike around for me, get more feeling [so I] can push the thing a little bit harder. Right now I’m kind of just sitting on top of it and not doing much.

“We know we’re still behind and going to be behind going into the first race but that’s just the way it is. We’ll just keep plugging away.”

Excitement Level High For STP Gas Booster 500 At Martinsville Speedway

STP Gas Booster 500 Logo
STP Gas Booster 500 Logo
PMARTINSVILLE, Va. (March 29, 2013) – Could the excitement and anticipation level be any higher for next Sunday’s STP® Gas Booster™ 500 at Martinsville Speedway?

Let’s count the reasons.

The target on Joey Logano’s rear bumper after last Sunday’s wild finish.

Tony Stewart’s temper. (See above).

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is off to his best start ever in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and comes into the STP® Gas Booster™ 500 as the points’ leader.

The new Gen-6 cars have proved exciting everywhere this season, but drivers have pointed to Martinsville Speedway as the track the new cars may be best early in the season.

And the list goes on.

Like Danica Patrick earning the distinction of the first woman to ever start a Sprint Cup race at Martinsville. Women have raced in every other major division at the half-mile track.

Then there is Jeff Gordon trying to get his season back on track. He’s mired back in 18th in points, but Martinsville could help turn that around. He’s won here seven times, and even though his last Martinsville win came in 2005, he has led laps in the past 13 Martinsville races.

And of course the news of the week: Mark Martin replacing injured Denny Hamlin in the No. 11 Fed Ex Toyota for the next few races, starting here at Martinsville Speedway.

With all the chatter about some wild on-track antics the past two weeks, Earnhardt Jr. has sort of flown under the radar into the Sprint Cup points lead.

The STP® Gas Booster™ 500 at Martinsville will mark Earnhardt’s 475th NASCAR Sprint Cup start. Although he’s never won at the 0.525-mile track, Earnhardt has finished in the top five on 10 occasions, including third in last year’s spring race, a race he had a shot to win right up to the closing lap. He has finished second on two occasions at Martinsville.

Gordon and Johnson are tied among active drivers with most Martinsville wins, seven. Gordon led the most laps here last spring and seemed to be on his way to victory when Clint Bowyer tried to make it three-wide on a restart late in the race and created a multi-car wreck that included Gordon and Johnson. It was the start of a feud between Gordon and Bowyer that hasn’t been settled yet.

With 14 wins between them, Gordon and Johnson obviously have been dominant here. At one point in his career Johnson had 17 straight top-10 finishes while Gordon once had a 15-race top 10 streak. Johnson got back on track at Martinsville last fall with a victory.

Hamlin is the other recent master of Martinsville, but is on the sidelines for next Sunday’s race. Martin, his replacement, hasn’t been too shabby at Martinsville. In 48 starts at Martinsville, the 54-year-old Martin has two wins, two poles and a career-average finish of 13.3.

While Logano has drawn a lot of attention from his late-race collision with Hamlin a week ago and a similar situation two weeks ago, his success this season, his first with team-owner Roger Penske, has been overlooked. He’s ninth in the Sprint Cup points’ standings, a spot behind Paul Menard, who has been the top driver out of Richard Childress Racing so far this season.

Rookie Ricky Stenhouse has also been a surprise in 2013, sitting 12th in points headed into the STP® Gas Booster™ 500. The other top rookie-of-the-year candidate Danica Patrick hasn’t fared well after the Daytona 500 and sits outside of the top 25 in points. Interestingly enough, neither Stenhouse nor Patrick have ever turned a lap at Martinsville Speedway in any division.

Action kicks off at Martinsville Speedway next Friday with practice and qualifying for both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Camping World Truck series. Fan gates open at 9 a.m., the same time that the trucks hit the track for their first practice. After a full day of practice for both divisions, Sprint Cup qualifying is set for 3:40 p.m. with Camping World Truck Series qualifying at 5 p.m.

There will be two Sprint Cup practice sessions Saturday morning with the Kroger 250 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race taking the green flag at 1:30 p.m.

The STP® Gas Booster™ 500 is set to begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday April 7.

Fan gates will open at 9 a.m. each day.

Tickets for the STP® Gas Booster™ 500, the Kroger 250 and Martinsville Pole Day may be purchased by calling 877.RACE.TIX or by visitingwww.martinsvillespeedway.com online.

Martinsville Speedway’s phone hours are Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Phone hours for this Sunday are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Phone hours next week will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday.

Martinsville Speedway’s ticket office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays through the upcoming race weekend. The ticket office will be open Easter Sunday, March 31.

Stewart: Logano needs to learn lesson

Stewart: Logano needs to learn a lessonTony Stewart believes Joey Logano has to ‘learn a lesson’ after his involvement in two controversial clashes at the end of the Fontana NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

Denny Hamlin was kept in hospital overnight for observation on a possible back injury after he and Logano tangled as they fought for the lead at the final corner.

They had previously tangled and rowed at Bristol a week earlier.

Speaking in the immediate aftermath of the incident, before Hamlin’s injury became clear, Logano said: “He probably shouldn’t have done what he did last week, so that’s what he gets.”

Stewart then lunged at Logano in the pitlane, furious with him for his defensive driving at the final restart.

The Penske and Stewart-Haas pit crews separated the drivers, with the enraged Stewart telling television reporters his intention when seeking out Logano had been to “bust his ass”.

Stewart said his fury was mainly because Logano had criticised other drivers for their track manners and then displayed “double standards”.

“Complaining about how everybody else is driving here and then to do that is a double standard,” said Stewart.

“He is a tough guy on pit road as soon as one of his crew guys gets in the middle of it. Until then he’s a scared little kid. Then he wants to sit there and throw a water bottle at me.

“He is going to learn a lesson. He can run his mouth on Twitter and stuff all he wants. I’ve got plenty of people that are going to watch for that.

“He’s nothing but a little rich kid that has never had to work in his life. He’s going to learn with us working guys that had to work our way up.

Stewart: Logano needs to learn a lesson“I’m just tired of watching these kids whine and then they sit there and act tough when their crew guys get in the middle of it.

“If NASCAR wants us to let the guys have at it, it shouldn’t be any different than hockey. Let the guys have at it and then when one guy goes to the ground, then it’s over.

“He’s sent Denny to the hospital and screwed our day up.”

Logano felt his incident with Stewart was typical of a late-race lead battle.

“I understand that he’s upset about that. If that was any point earlier in the race that would be really dumb for me to do,” said Logano.

“At the end of the race, I feel like it is what I had to do.”

In a Collision? Share Your Experience on TA’s CrashStories Website

Today, Transportation Alternatives is launching CrashStories, a new website where pedestrians and cyclists can report crashes or near-misses with motor vehicle drivers on an interactive map. Developed by Hunter College city planning graduate student Aaron Fraint, the project aims to fill gaps in official data sources and offer a place for crash victims to be heard.

CrashStories asks pedestrians and cyclists to report crashes or near-misses on a map of New York City.

Data mapped by TA’s CrashStat tool, which originates from NYPD and is filtered by the state DMV and state DOT, tends to skew toward collisions with major injuries, leaving fender-benders and other, less severe crashes underrepresented in the data. “Everything else tends to get underreported or not reported at all,” said TA’s Jennifer Godzeno.

TA, said Godzeno, gets calls every day from people involved in minor crashes. ”If we can start to record that information in enough detail, then maybe we can start to intervene on streets or at intersections before tragedy even strikes,” Godzeno said.

The project grew out of a prototype developed for TA by Columbia University city planning students last year. Over the summer, Fraint was considering developing a similar tool as part of his fellowship at Hunter but couldn’t reach a broad audience to collect data. Meanwhile, TA was looking to move the prototype to the next level but didn’t have the internal capacity to develop the tool. In November, Fraint met with Godzeno.

“It was really the right place at the right time on both accounts,” Fraint said. “I don’t really have a way to reach 100,000 people the way they do.” Fraint and TA came to an agreement, and Fraint got to work. The service uses Shareabouts, a platform developed by Streetsblog’s parent organization, OpenPlans.

Fraint hopes to use the data to analyze the effectiveness of street designs. He also wants to compare CrashStories data to police crash reports. “Ideally, the same intersections would be identified as hot spots,” he said. Eventually, he hopes to launch CrashStories with partner organizations in other areas, and compare data between cities.

TA plans to use the tool as a component of its street safety advocacy, encouraging residents to enter their stories along particularly dangerous streets, providing information that can help convince decision makers to take action for safety.

“This site is a way to humanize the experience of having been in a crash or a near-miss,” while also putting the data to good use, said Godzeno. “Everybody tells us about this every day.”

Volkswagen Details U.S.-Spec 2015 Golf and GTI Powertrains [2013 New York Auto Show]

2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI

When Volkswagen debuted the seventh-generation, 2015 Golf at the last year’s Paris auto show and the 2015 GTI at the Geneva show earlier this year, the automaker tantalizingly revealed nearly everything about both rides. That is, everything except final engine options for the U.S. market. Oh sure, VW furnished European powertrain specifications for both rides, but despite the latest Golf and GTI being still about a year away from going on sale here in the U.S., we’re an impatient bunch—after all, the Golf and GTI are among our favorite compacts. Thankfully, the wait is over for U.S.-spec powertrain info, which Volkswagen has announced at the 2013 New York auto show.

2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI

While the European Golf offers a host of gas and diesel engines, the U.S. model will offer just two: A turbocharged, gas-fed 1.8-liter four and a 2.0-liter diesel four. The 1.8-liter makes the same 170 horsepower as the outgoing Golf’s inline-five it replaces, but seven more lb-ft of torque. Once again, the diesel will be dropped into the Golf TDI, but this time around it’s an all-new engine. Compared to the current Golf TDI’s 2.0-liter four, the new engine—which is a member of VW’s new EA288 engine family—produces the same 236 lb-ft of torque, but 10 additional horsepower, for a total of 150. Volkswagen’s specificity regarding the regular Golf’s transmission choices starts and ends with the promise that both manual and automatic options will be offered; gear counts and the type of automatic weren’t detailed. We’re betting that we get either the Euro model’s seven- or six-speed dual-clutch auto.

2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI

As for our favorite hot hatchback, the GTI, it will get the same turbocharged, 2.0-liter four as the Euro model. Only our version will make slightly less horsepower, with VW’s initial estimates coming in around 210 ponies. Before you start bellyaching about how Americans always get the short end of the stick, consider that at least the 2015 GTI will make the same 258 lb-ft of torque as the Euro model. The outgoing U.S.-spec GTI packs 200 horses and 207 lb-ft and is hardly a slouch; factor in the newest model’s slight weight loss, and it should be quicker than before. Regardless, the last-gen GTI was down a few horsepower to its European counterpart, too, so any anguish over missing output shouldn’t be a surprise. Once again, a six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic transmission will be offered.

Finally, Volkswagen gave no further indication of expected fuel economy for any 2015 Golf derivative, or whether it plans to bring the latest GTD—effectively a diesel-powered GTI—to the States. (We suspect it will make it here.) As for the possible next-generation Jetta SportWagen, well, look no further than the 2015 Volkswagen Golf Variant; we expect that here in the U.S. it will be powered by the same 1.8-liter four or 2.0-liter diesel as the Golf.

GAFFNEY, S.C. (March 25, 2013) – After battling the track in sunny California, Mike Wallace and the No. 01 Flex Seal team overcame obstacles and finished 23rd in the Royal Purple 300.

On track action began Friday with one extended practice session. The team unloaded fast, immediately completing a lap within the top 20. After working through different setups, the No. 01 Flex Seal Chevy finished the day 23rd, leaving the team optimistic for qualifying on Saturday morning.

After starting the race 26th, the veteran Wallace began to attack the track with a wildly loose race car. After radioing to the crew for help, the first caution flag waved allowing the team the chance to fine tune the race car. Crew Chief Marc Browning used a multitude of adjustments to tighten the Chevy, sending Mike back out on the track.

As the race continued, Mike used a wave around and a lucky dog to stay competitive on the track. After entering the top 25, Wallace remained there for the remainder of the event, and finished 23rd, the second top 25 in a row. Wallace is now tied for 24th in points.

Mike Wallace Quotes: “Our team, once again, accomplished our initial goal of finishing the race. I am happy with our overall results this weekend, including practice and qualifying. We found something that helped our cars, both the No. 01 and the No. 4, to go faster on track, that I think will help us in the future. I would like to thank Flex Seal for their support this weekend, and I think the two weeks off will help the team catch up and prepare our cars for Texas.”

Nissan adds 2013 Titan to gearshift recall

2013 Nissan Titan

Nissan has added the 2013 Titan to the list of vehicles recalled over potential gearshift issues. Just a few days ago, the automaker recalled nearly 20,000 NV Vans for a problem with the shift lever assembly that could cause the gear selector to read inaccurately. Now Nissan is recalling certain 2013 Titan pickup trucks manufactured between December 17, 2012 and February 20, 2013 and equipped with column-mounted shift levers, though for a different fault. The pickups were built using certain chemicals that could cause the brake-shift interlock mechanism to fail over time. If that happens, the truck could be shifted out of Park without the driver's foot on the brake.

As a result, the truck could roll away and cause an accident or injury. Nissan says it will remedy the fault free of charge. Owners can expect to be notified once the campaign begins on or around April 8. You can read the full National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notice below for more information.

Although the Red Bull buggies of Carlos Sainz and Nasser Al-Attiyah were expected to set the Dakar pace this year, Peterhansel ended up taking one of his most dominant victories yet in the more reliable Mini.

The 47-year-old said the reliability of the X-raid Mini package made the decision to re-sign easy.

“The reliability of the Mini All4 Racing is virtually unique,” Peterhansel said.

“In two Dakar rallies, we didn’t encounter a single technical problem, not only thanks to the very good car but also because of the entire team that is doing an extremely professional job.

“Despite heat, sand and the massive pressure, everybody works flawlessly. Only this approach enabled us to prevail against competitors who enjoyed regulation advantages.”

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series:

This past weekend’s race at Auto Club (Calif.) Speedway provided a familiar face in victory lane with Kyle Busch, but the race didn’t come without its drama either. What were your thoughts?

Kyle Anderson: This race provided some of the best racing this season in my eyes. Seeing four and five wide on a track with different pit strategies will always make for a fun and exciting race. As much as drama can be a bad thing, drama is exactly what NASCAR needs right now to regain some of its attention in the sports media world to regain its popularity.

Tim Clagg: This past weekend’s race at Auto Club Speedway provided the best side-by-side racing that we’ve seen thus far with the new Gen6 car. I think it was the perfect combination of the new car, tire combination and a “seasoned” track. This surprised me because typically Auto Club Speedway doesn’t provide the most exciting racing. In my opinion this is hands down the best finish in ACS history and one of the most exciting finishes we have seen during the last few years. I am eager for the series to head to 1.5 mile tracks on the schedule such as Texas to see if the Gen6 car can provide great racing at tracks that typically provide the greatest side by side racing

Chris Knight: Personally, I thought it was the best race I’ve ever seen at Auto Club Speedway and by sure, the best race of the 2013 season thus far. There’s no hiding behind that the Gen6 car brought this racetrack to life. Typically, this race is known as a snoozer, but I found a lot of people including myself on the edge of their seats towards the end of the race. No doubt that the track also did a good job promoting the race, the fans really came out to the track to support. One thing is for sure, I’m looking forward to Michigan International Speedway (the sister track) in June and August.

Adam Niemeyer: I think it was the best race of the season. Sure it had its stretches of long green flag runs, but a lot of races do. Drivers had to drive their cars. Crew chiefs had the ability to make adjustments. Those who had the best cars were able to make them work (did you see Keselowski rocket to the front from the rear at the beginning of the race and Dale Jr do the same at the end?).

And certainly the finish was one for discussion as well. The race had just about everything you could ask for.

Jason Sciavicco: I thought it was the best race of the year as far an ending. Heck my wife was even into it. It’s what NASCAR really needed besides the injury to Denny. That race was the lead story on 90% of sports shows.

Annamarie Strawhand: I have to say it was a very good thing for Kyle Busch; he was not the center of a controversy for once which is good for his public image, which is still In the ‘healing process’. Overall I feel he was showing us smart driving and this year he is really racing in a mature ‘thinking man’s’ way. He is growing up. Happy to see this. From a sponsorship perspective this is very good for him and his team.”

Lori Tyler: I was so excited to see this for the Auto Club Speedway. For years, there were ranting’s over the lack of quality racing. And while I understand that, I also believe not every track is meant to be a Talladega, Daytona or a Bristol. Wow, is all I can say. It really couldn’t have been much better than it was. The race was exciting from start to finish, and those last 20 or so laps will be the makings of water cooler discussions and highlight reels for quite some time. It provided something for everyone. I was just glad to see this for the Auto Club Speedway. This is, after all, my home track, and a top notch facility.

Kyle Busch ran a stellar race and was in the hunt for most of the race. He was the dominant car, and deserved this win. While it probably wasn’t the television celebration it could have been, the performance of this team last weekend was phenomenal.

Marty Tyler: Kyle deserved that win. As far as drama, I feel that happens to some extent during most, if not all, races whether it is a big issue or not. And remember the drivers are still learning the capabilities or limitations of the Gen6 And, as fans we all love drama. We may not agree with some of it but it does make the viewing experience more exciting and enjoyable. After all that has certainly help make the NASCAR of today. And it was great to finally see this type of exciting racing at Fontana!

• In your eyes, give us your thoughts on the whole last lap tango between Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin. Whose fault was it? Was it a racing accident? Will the feud continue?

Kyle Anderson: From what I saw throughout the race, Denny gave Joey quite a bit of space and raced him cleanly when the situation on the track came up. To me, if there wasn’t this whole “feud” between the two drivers prior to this race, it would be easy to stamp this incident as a race incident, but with all that has taken place that lead to this last lap crash, I would have to say that it was Joey’s fault. Denny had a lane up top that was given to him with Joey electing the low/middle groove. To me, it was more about Joey worrying that Denny would win the race electing that groove more than anything, and as he hasn’t had enough years in the Cup series to gain the respect of someone like Jeff Gordon or Mark Martin, the blame usually falls on the younger driver.

Tim Clagg: I was watching the race unfold between Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano during the final few laps and knew that neither one of these “aggressive” drivers was going to back down coming to the checkers. A lot of people are pointing fingers saying this was payback for Denny taking Joey out in the late stages at Bristol while Logano was running 2nd. I disagree. This was a racing accident with two hungry drivers wanting to earn their first win of the 2013 season. The new Gen6 cars puts out a huge side draft in the corners for these cars and when Logano entered turn 3 his car kept pushing up the track, you then see his car get loose and make contact with Hamlin. In my opinion no driver would ever intentionally wreck another competitor at a track where you run 200 MPH plus entering the corner. Moving forward I truly believe this feud won’t be an issue because of the repercussions both drivers are facing after this incident. Hamlin now sidelined now for up to six weeks maybe more and Logano taking the heat from fans and some fellow competitors.

Chris Knight: Man, this is a touchy subject. I felt the last couple of laps were nothing but a typical racing deal. No driver was going to back down for the win and the intensity picked up a ton when it came down to either Denny Hamlin or Joey Logano. No one likes the end result of the crash, one that will keep Denny Hamlin on the sidelines for at least five races. I don’t think it was intentional on anyone’s part, just a bad outcome. If we learned anything, we learned that every single part of the track that has a wall, should be a “soft-wall.” There’s little doubt in my mind that Hamlin may have been able to walk away from the incident injury-free if the wall had been a soft-wall.

Adam Niemeyer: It was a racing incident. Period and the end. Joey Logano was not at fault. Denny Hamlin was not at fault. It was two guys giving it their all on the last lap. Did anyone expect Joey to back down, especially after what happened at Bristol and his comments all week? I didn’t. In fact, I was rooting for Logano to beat Hamlin just to prove his point.

This being said, no one, and I mean no one, wanted to see what happened to Hamlin. I hate seeing guys get hurt and I hope Denny can return as soon as possible. But I don’t think there was anything wrong with the finish. Good, hard racing occasionally involves a wreck.

Jason Sciavicco: I think Joey was either going to win the race or do whatever it took to make sure Denny didn’t. When he realized Denny was going to win…

Annamarie Strawhand: “The biggest thing I took from this is that Joey Logano is not just more aggressive, but I see a very “angry” young man with his behavior. Not sure what is the cause of this. I was stunned that he said “That’s what he gets” about Hamlin after Hamlin hit the wall and that was a bit immature, even if he did not know Hamlin was hurt. I used this as a lesson for younger drivers who follow on my Facebook page, that no matter how angry you are or the heat of the moment, saying something like Joey did was very in-appropriate. The on-track incident is racing and many factors involved, but you can control what comes out of your mouth, or at least think first that the other driver may be injured. I think Joey needs to get with his PR people and Roger Penske and learn how he can get better at thinking before he speaks and also understand that he is a leader of his team and must show a good example of sportsmanship, especially driving for the likes of a legendary class act such as Roger Penske. I know it’s the heat of the moment, and Joey is human and we need to give him some slack, so I hope he learns something from this.”

Lori Tyler: I truly believe this was simply a racing incident, that’s all, nothing else. Two guys, admitted rivals, were pushing their cars to the absolute limits. This close, hard racing was clean for the most part. I don’t believe that either driver made any intentional moves to limit the other from contention, other than to protect their own position and attempt to run for the win. The end result was two drivers challenging one another for position, in an attempt to grab that win. Furthermore, if these two had not had the heated exchanges that we have seen from them this season, I don’t believe this would have even been discussed or scrutinized the way that it has been. Isn’t this why we all believe the sport needs rivals?

Marty Tyler: Actually it could be viewed either way but relying strictly on Logano’s comments it wasn’t an accident therefore Logano is at fault. The fued? I think it will continue to some degree once Hamlin returns but the long arm of NASCAR will definitely be working on that situation. It will be interesting to watch this play out.

Hamilton denies Ecclestone RBR claims

Lewis HamiltonLewis Hamilton has dismissed claims he asked Bernie Ecclestone to get him a Red Bull deal, insisting that joining Mercedes was the best decision of his life.

Ecclestone was reported at the weekend as saying that in mid-2012 Hamilton had asked for his help to get a contract at Red Bull.

Those efforts failed to come to fruition, however, with Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz preferring to remain loyal to Mark Webber.

Hamilton said he was aware of Ecclestone’s comments, but he was confused as they did not tally with his version of events.

“He seems to only make comments about me for some reason,” said Hamilton when asked for his feelings on Ecclestone’s remarks.

“It makes me a bit nervous because we have quite a good relationship and I’m quite open with him about a lot of stuff.

“I don’t really know what to say about the comments he made.

“I think he said something about me talking to Red Bull? I said to my management team to speak to all the teams and give me what the best options were.

“There was no particular one that I was pushing for more.

“At the end of the day I am here [Mercedes] and it’s the best decision I have ever made.”

Hamilton took his first podium for Mercedes in the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday.

NASCAR: Logano action not deliberate

NASCAR Sprint Cup director John Darby says the organisers instantly dismissed the notion of Joey Logano having deliberately triggered the Fontana crash that left Denny Hamlin with a fractured back.

Logano and Hamlin ended up fighting for victory at Fontana a week after clashes both on and off track at Bristol.

The pair made contact, with Hamlin hitting the wall head on and suffering an injury that will rule him out of at least five races.

In an television interview before the severity of Hamlin’s situation became apparent, Logano said “he probably shouldn’t have done what he did last week, so that’s what he gets.”

NASCAR chose to issue no penalties over the clash, and Darby said it was clear from how Logano and Hamlin were racing that it was a normal close fight for victory rather than anything malicious.

“They were side-by-side and everything that great competitors do,” he said.

“If somebody was of the mindset to retaliate, they probably would have been lined up nose to tail to start with and somebody would have drove into the other car and spun them around.

“This case is so far from the opposite that it never even crossed anybody’s mind that that was part of it.”

PITLANE BRAWL

Logano was also involved in a pitlane fracas with Tony Stewart in which the three-time champion angrily accused the Penske driver of blocking him.

No penalties were applied in this case either and Darby said NASCAR was happy for its drivers to voice their feelings in such a way.

“A few years ago, we backed away from micromanaging drivers’ emotions,” he said.

“You would hope in today’s world that if somebody didn’t win a race, they would be upset about it for whatever reason.

“A couple of drivers at the end of the race arguing a little bit doesn’t create a foul in our world today.

Stewart: Logano needs to learn a lesson“The crews did a great job of managing their drivers to make sure that it didn’t cross the line to where there was physical violence or anything like that, and that’s what you would hope.”

Darby also ruled out any NASCAR intervention in the sort of defensive driving Stewart was enraged over.

“Right now, I can tell you there are not any conversations internally inside NASCAR to look at blocking as the violation or penalty-type situation that some other forms of motorsports do,” he said.

“With Sprint Cup Series racing obviously being far above a lot of the other forms of racing as far as competitiveness goes, we are going to have close racing, and close side by side racing, and we are going to have close front to rear racing, and there’s a lot of that that’s just part of competition.

“I don’t think we need to jump in the middle of any of that and screw it up.”

EPA proposes new Tier 3 emission rules, requiring cleaner cars and gasoline in 2017

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) added a new word to the wider public lexicon today when it proposed new emission and fuel standards for cars and gasoline: Tier 3. This new regulation is "sensible" and will "significantly reduce harmful pollution, prevent thousands of premature deaths and illnesses, while also enabling efficiency improvements in the cars and trucks we drive," the EPA says. Unsurprisingly, not everyone agrees.

The rules (885-page PDF here) would require that gasoline have a lower sulfur content - dropping from 30 parts per million today to 10 parts per million by 2017 - which will make it easier for cars to meet the new reduced tailpipe and evaporative emissions requirements. If the proposed rules take effect, they "will help avoid up to 2,400 premature deaths per year and 23,000 cases of respiratory ailments in children," the EPA says. The European Respiratory Journal recently published a study that found that vehicle emissions can cause asthma in children.

Some numbers from the proposed rules: Smog-forming volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides will need to be reduced by 80 percent. Toxic air pollutants, such as benzene and 1,3-butadiene, will need to be cut by up to 40 percent. A particulate matter standard will need to be 70 percent tighter. Fuel vapor emissions will need to drop to "near zero." The rules would go into effect in 2017 and are basically taking rules from the California Air Resources Board and making them valid nationwide.

The EPA says it had "extensive" input from "auto manufactures, refiners, and states," which implies there is broad agreement on the rules. But Republican politicians and members of the gas and oil industy say that gas prices will rise, up to nine cents a gallon, if the EPA gets its way. Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton, R-MI, said in a statement that, "The Obama administration cannot be more out of touch" with the economic burden this will place on drivers. The EPA, instead, estimates it'll cost less than a penny a gallon, but it will add an average cost of $130 per vehicle to new cars in 2025.

The Natural Resources Defense Council fought back against the criticism. Luke Tonachel, NRDC senior vehicles analyst, said in a statement that the new standards will save lives at a minimal cost, and that, "Big Oil companies want us to believe these benefits aren't worth it. But that's because they care about profits above all else."

Pirelli: Red Bull tyre criticism is wrong

Christian Horner and Paul HemberyPirelli insists it is unmoved by complaints from Red Bull about its tyres, and it thinks that the Malaysian Grand Prix proved it is doing the right thing.

Formula 1′s tyre supplier faced a hard time from Red Bull representatives over the Sepang weekend, with the reigning champion team eager for the tyres to be less aggressive.

Red Bull feels that the impact of the tyre on car performance is too great, which is limiting the speed of its car.

The team still managed to take a one-two finish on Sunday as it carefully managed the tyre situation, and Pirelli believes the lack of problems in the race showed that it has got its 2013 tyre formula right.

Mark Hughes’ GP report: tyres played key role in Red Bull flashpoint

When asked by AUTOSPORT if the race had silenced critics who were questioning the 2013 tyres, Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery said: “To be honest it was only one critic really.

“Everyone else came and said they don’t know what they [Red Bull] were talking about.

“It was a challenge. And pretty much the same as we had the last two years.

“You have a combination of the new car, winter testing in the cold, new tyres, and the first time they come together is in Melbourne. And it has happened again.

Pirelli tyres“We have had two races and we tend to look at the first group of four races to see where we are.”

Hembery was insistent that it would be wrong of Pirelli to make any changes to its tyres at the whim of a single team.

“If you want to favour one team then the season is over,” he said. “It would be finished by Monza.

“Red Bull clearly have a lot of performance. Maybe they would like something else but I am sure other teams would like other things as well.”
