Team Penske has expanded AJ Allmendinger’s IndyCar schedule to include Long Beach.
The move is aimed at helping the former Champ Car star reacquaint himself with single-seaters ahead of his Indy 500 debut with the team in May.
Penske team president Tim Cindric had previously stated his hope that deals could be put together to give Allmendinger more races in the team’s third car.
He announced via Twitter on Saturday that the American will be on the grid at Long Beach in two weeks.
“Pushing the go button for AJ Allmendinger at Long Beach,” Cindric wrote. “Trying to give him as much seat time as we can for Indianapolis.”
Allmendinger, whose appearance at this weekend’s IndyCar race at Barber is his first in a single-seater since he left Champ Car for NASCAR at the end of 2006, has admitted that he still feels the he has not unlocked all of the speed in the IndyCar despite posting top 10 times in both of yesterday’s practice sessions.
