UFC welterweight Mike Swick has stepped into the Octagon more than a dozen times in his career, winning more often than not, yet none compared to his most recent outing in the infamous eight-sided structure. Swick made a successful return to the cage last weekend at UFC on FOX 4 after more than two years out for health-related reasons. Though making a comeback in general was an accomplishment in itself, in the end it was only half of the “feel good” story with Swick scoring Knockout of the Night thanks to some beautifully brutal shots from above to opponent DaMarques Johnson.
Swick has since had a few days to reflect on the experience and recently acknowledged just how important the victory was to him on a personal level, let alone professional one.
“Quick” Swick Talks Motivation Going Into FOX Fight
“It was the biggest win of my career, considering all the stuff I’ve been through. I thought my career was over, or a big possibility. I decided to push forward and give it everything I had. It was a long road, but I did it,” admitted Swick on MMAJunkie Radio. “And there were critics out there, so it was a lot of stress. I was just hoping I’d step up to the game and fight a good fight and make it exciting.”
“I felt good and healthy and hungry. I was trying to get that knockout from the start,” he continued, giving credit to Johnson’s overall toughness as well. “To his credit, he can take a punch. The first two punches I landed were solid. He just kept coming. He’s a tough dude.”
While Swick is listed as being medically suspended for up to six months, based on his enthusiasm and undeniable itch to compete again it seems likely he could be back in the ring by year’s end. The 33-year old improved his overall record to 15-4 with the finish of Johnson, adding to past wins against the likes of Ben Saunders and David Louiseau.
