While it has one of the more pretentious and misleading monikers of any event on the Pebble Beach calendar (there are in fact no quails anywhere to be seen; it takes its name from the golf lodge where it’s held), the Quail is one of the more laid back. Yes, it’s mostly a back slap for the rich and the even richer—tickets cost $450, Gulfstream and Lear both had displays this year, and we saw a Ferrari Enzo in the parking lot—but a relatively small crowd means you can actually see the cars, gourmet food and drink are included in the admission, and the field is perhaps the most diverse and interesting you can see over the weekend, including the big concours on Sunday.
