Bellator adds depth at light heavyweight with signing of Renato Sobral

It looks like Bellator is dead-set on making their light heavyweight pool much deeper than before after inking Muhammed Lawal a few months back and now bringing in Renato Sobral as well. Sobral’s signing was confirmed this week by Bellator officials in a press release.

“Babalu is an awesome addition to the Bellator family,” glowed CEO Bjorn Rebney in the company’s statement. “He’s beaten some of the greatest fighters in the sport, and poses a tremendous threat to every fighter in our Light Heavyweight Division. From a fans perspective, he’s incredibly exciting to watch, and I’m expecting big things from ‘Babalu’ in January on Spike.”

As alluded to, Sobral will make his promotional debut in 2013 as part of the Season 8 Light Heavyweight Tournament.

“This is my new home, and I can’t wait to get into the tournament. My only wish was that it could all be in one night, but I don’t think we can do that, so I’ll just put one more tournament under my belt, and I’m going to take this opportunity and get my shot at the Bellator World Title,” added Sobral on the matter.

A Look at Babalu’s Last Bout

The seasoned Brazilian holds an overall record of 37-9 including wins over Chael Sonnen and Mauricio Rua. He is also a former UFC title-contender and Strikeforce champion.
