Martin replaces Hamlin for Martinsville

Mark MartinMark Martin will replace the injured Denny Hamlin at Joe Gibbs Racing for this weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup round at Martinsville.

Hamlin is expected to be out for six weeks while he recovers from an L1 compression fracture to his back, sustained during his last-lap collision with Joey Logano at Fontana last month.

Cup veteran Martin had initially been announced as driving all the races in Hamlin’s Toyota Camry until its regular occupant’s return.

However, with the 40-time Cup race winner already contracted to drive for Michael Waltrip Racing in the upcoming Texas, Kansas and Richmond events, he is unavailable.

The seat will instead be taken by Gibbs’ Nationwide Series regular Brian Vickers from the Texas race in mid-April until Hamlin’s return.
