Volkswagen driver Jari-Matti Latvala says this week’s Rally Sweden will provide the Polo R WRC with its first real test competitive engine test.
The team made a sensational debut on last month’s Monte Carlo Rally, when Sebastien Ogier placed the Polo second overall, but Latvala reckons the super-fast Swedish stages will really test the motor.
The Polo R WRC’s 1600cc turbocharged powerplant – built to Global Race Engine regulations – was one of the area where the drivers had urged team to focus its resource.
“In Sweden the stages are fast and flowing, they are a different style to Monte Carlo,” said Latvala.
“It was great to see how competitive we were on the first round, but the high-speed roads here will ask a lot of the engine.
“I think this rally will say a lot more about exactly where we are with the car. I would like to reach the top five, a podium would be perfect.”
