Tung gets KCMG Le Mans seat

Ho-Pin TungChinese driver Ho Pin Tung will compete at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours with the KC Motorgroup squad.

The 30-year-old will replace Hong Kong driver Jim Ka To for the round-the-clock race.

To was part of a three-man team that finished 12th overall, and sixth in the LMP2 class, in this year’s Silverstone World Endurance Championship opener.

Alex Imperatori and Matt Howson both retain their seats and will line up alongside Tung at Le Mans.

Tung, the first Chinese driver to enter the Indianapolis 500 in 2011, said he was looking forward to making history as part of the first Chinese team to race at Le Mans.

“I am thrilled having been invited to join KCMG and compete in the world’s most appealing racing event,” he said.

“KCMG will be the first Chinese team ever to join the Le Mans 24 Hours race and I consider being part of this history in making, this June, as a great honour.

“I have raced in the streets of Monaco and at Indianapolis. To complete the magic three is the dream of every racing driver.”

KCMG owner and managing director Paul Ip hailed Tung’s arrival, saying: “He has proven himself dexterous in different areas of motorsport and has emerged as one of Asia’s most talented drivers. I believe that he will be a great addition to the team.

“We haven’t stopped working since the last event at Silverstone. Currently, we are in the process of strategising to ensure that our Le Mans outing will be impeccable.”

Tung will continue his commitments in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia and the Asian Le Mans Series, which has been trimmed to four races, alongside making his Le Mans bow.

2013 Lamborghini Aventador 50th Anniversary Edition

We can’t imagine there are people who think that the Lamborghini Aventador is too modest. The Italian marque, however, seems to think such people exist. Another Visit to Belgium

Mixed class racing at its best: Pontiacs, Mazdas and VWs rush down the long front stretch of Circuit Zolder to start a Grand Touring Cup race.

Season One of 2013 is coming to a close. That means championship implications will play a role in every series’ points standings. The iRacing.com Grand Touring Cup points have been tight throughout the season in all three classes and it may be even tighter during Week 11. iRacing made sure to incorporate tracks into the schedule with all this championship stuff in mind, so they kindly inserted Belgium’s Circuit Zolder into the Grand Touring Cup’s schedule for Week 11.

To say 2.492 mile Circuit Zolder has tricky twists and turns would be an understatement. The circuit’s layout often frustrates sim-racers due to its extremely technical chicanes, long straightaways and rather strange pit exit.

In the Pontiac Solstice class, Joni Bäckman (Finland) prevailed over Ilham Halabi (International) and Stephen Warcup (Western Canada) by 65 championship points on the Week 11 point standings. While Bäckman entered two races and won them both from the pole starting position, Halabi competed in four races and won three of them.  On the qualifying board, Kimmo Suominen (Finland) ran a blazingly quick 1:50.799 on his run to beat Roope Turkkila (Finland) and the rest of the field by a little more than a tenth.

Sergio Moura (Iberia) held a 33 point lead in the Mazda MX5 class Week 11 over Jake Forster (England) and Danny Conlon (England). Conlon entered the most races out of the threesome with four races and he won them all, but Moura prevailed by running two higher strength of field races. Of course, you can’t go through a week of iRacing.com Grand Touring Cup series competition without mentioning Kenville Inniss (International) who seems to perform like a champ every week. Inniss won the pole by just a tenth over Conlon and Moura. In terms of tight competition, Week 11 was by far the best for the Mazda MX-5 Cup class.

Michael Booth2 (Celtic) and Luc van Schaik (Benelux) negotiate one of Zolder’s infamously difficult chicanes.

William Drylie (Atlantic) beat the best in the series in the Jetta TDi cup class in Week 11 with three starts and two wins to earn 164 points. Overall points leader Marco Luca Abbate (Italy) was just four points behind with two starts and two wins on the week. After Abbate was Alexandru Raileanu (Central-Eastern Europe) who entered two races and won one, earning the iRacer 152 championship points for the week. However, Raileanu did pick-up the pole for the week when he ran a 1:48.011, two tenths better than Zaahir A Essa (International) and half a second better than Abbate’s lap.

With the season coming to a close in just one week, the iRacing servers have yet to see a champion of a truly wonderfully entertaining Sim racing series. For the final week of Grand Touring Cup series competition this season, the servers will host a Japanese special: Suzuka Circuit. All that is left now is to find the true champions of a truly fantastic season of online racing.

DOT Deploys “Street Safety Managers” to High-Volume Bike Routes

DOT Street Safety Managers at First Avenue and 11th Street. Photo: Stephen Miller

Wondering what’s up with the people holding stop signs in the bike lane today? NYC DOT’s press office just sent out this explanation:

New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today announced that DOT Street Safety Managers (SSM) are assigned to key bike and pedestrian corridors and bridge paths in Manhattan to help enhance safety among pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, further enhancing street safety as bike ridership grows, as DOT starts enforcement of commercial cycling laws and in advance of the 6,000-bike launch of the Citi Bike system. The SSMs will monitor locations with dense pedestrian and cyclist activity to reinforce existing traffic rules, advising bike riders to ride in the direction of traffic, yield to pedestrians and stop at traffic signals; instructing pedestrians to await traffic signals on the curb and not stand in bike paths; and discouraging cars from parking illegally in bike lanes. Shifts of four SSMs will be assigned to different locations in Manhattan weekdays during the morning and afternoon rush hours from April through October.

“Our streets have never been safer and we’re educating everyone on how to use them safely, and enforcing against those who don’t,” said Commissioner Sadik-Khan. “With more people out in the warm weather we’re committed to doing even more to get out the message that safety is the rule of the road.”

In 2011, after the tabloids ran some over-the-top pieces about conflicts on bike/ped paths over the East River, DOT contracted with Sam Schwartz Engineering to staff the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge with “pedestrian safety managers” tasked with keeping everyone in their respective lanes. The agency says this year it is saving some money by handing the expanded role of “street safety manager” to current agency employees during the peak cycling season.

DENVER, Colo. (April 25, 2013) – When it comes to Richmond (Va.) International Raceway, site of Saturday night’s Sprint Cup Series race, Kurt Busch has mixed feelings about the historic short track.

“It’s not a question of disliking Richmond because I like racing there,” stated Busch, driver of the No. 78 Furniture Row/Sealy Chevrolet SS. “It’s a great facility which produces outstanding racing.

“But for some reason I have had too many things go wrong there. Whether it was a pit stop debacle, an ignition problem or running out of gas. I always joke around that I threw away Richmond wins more times than I won Bristol because of different things happening.”

For the record, Busch has won Bristol five times. His lone Richmond Sprint Cup win came in the 2005 fall race. He also won last year’s Nationwide Series race at Richmond.

Busch’s career record in 24 career starts at the .75-mile oval includes one win, four top-fives, seven top-10s and 348 laps led.

“Each year I go to Richmond I feel my luck can turn around even though Richmond has been tough on me for having things happen in a race,” noted Busch, the 2004 Sprint Cup champion.

To get a better handle on the short track with the Generation-6 race car, Busch and the Denver, Colo.-based Furniture Row Racing team spent two days testing in Richmond a few weeks ago.

“We did a full two-day test at Richmond and put in a lot of effort to try to get better at this short track,” explained Busch. “We were pleased with the test. Hopefully this will be a smooth race for our Furniture Row/Sealy Chevrolet SS.”

Busch would definitely welcome a smooth race in the Toyota Owners 400. After posting consecutive top-five finishes at Bristol (4th) and California (5th), the Las Vegas native has had his share of bad luck.

“The last three races have been anything but smooth,” said Busch. “We showed potential in each race but couldn’t close the deal because of mechanical and other issues.”

Hamilton: Mercedes needs cool weather

Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes, Bahrain GP 2013, SakhirLewis Hamilton believes that the cooler conditions of upcoming races in Europe will suit Mercedes, after the team struggled to look after its tyres in the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn had said before the Sakhir event that if his outfit performed well in Bahrain then it would be quick everywhere because it was a track where it had struggled in 2012.

But although Nico Rosberg took pole position, he and Hamilton were beset by tyre overheating issues throughout the weekend and found themselves unable to challenge for a podium.

Their plight has highlighted the work Mercedes still needs to do before it can regularly challenge at the front, but Hamilton says he is not leaving Bahrain feeling downbeat.

When asked by AUTOSPORT if the tyre struggles were evidence the team could face similar difficulties to those of last year, Hamilton said: “We had a long meeting about that.

“We got a lot of information from these first four races to know that going to a cooler Europe will be good for us.

“It is good to get one of the most difficult races of the year out of the way in terms of heat, but there are a lot of areas that we need to improve on.

“To get fifth, two thirds and a fifth [in the first four races], though, I could not be happier.

“When I decided to join the team I knew potentially it could be a lot worse than that.”

HAMILTON PLAYS DOWN BAHRAIN DISAPPOINTMENT

Even though the Bahrain weekend did not suggest that Mercedes’ rear tyre issues are a thing of the past, Hamilton does not think its plight is a cause for concern.

Lewis Hamilton“Mercedes never was quick here,” he said. “Last year Red Bull won here and they have been strong for the last three years I am pretty sure, so that is not a real surprise.

“I don’t think it will be like that in all the races. Red Bull have struggled in qualifying at some races, and when we get to the cool places maybe we will be closer.”

Although Hamilton missed out on achieving his third consecutive podium finish, he says considering the gearbox change and early race form, ending up fifth at the chequered flag was a tremendous achievement.

“It was a massive positive, that race,” said Hamilton. “I am very happy with it.

“Fifth was the best we were hoping to get, and obviously after the first half of the race which was a disaster for me, I kept thinking that even that would not be possible.

“So, after falling back so far, I feel great.”

Speak Up If You Think Bike-Share Belongs in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill

Remember the Fort Greene residents who complained last year that bike-share stations don’t belong in their historic, landmarked neighborhood — even though you can find cobalt-blue Volvos and banana-yellow, late-model Beemers taking up the curb on those same blocks?

Seen in Fort Greene: colorful products made by massive global corporations, stored by private owners on the public right of way.

Well, they apparently haven’t been convinced that public bikes belong on the street as much as private cars. Someone even felt entitled enough to deface Citi Bike stations with bike-share-hating flyers. Another small fraction of curb space could become useful to the car-free majority of residents — perish the thought!

The anti-bike-share crowd has been lobbying Council Member Tish James to remove stations in the neighborhood, and James is holding a public forum about bike-share on Wednesday evening. Whether you plan to use bike-share yourself or you just want to see the system succeed, if you live in Fort Greene or Clinton Hill this is an important one to turn out for. Otherwise, this is the message that’s going to come through the loudest:

The bike-share forum is happening Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Benjamin Banneker Academy, 71-77 Clinton Avenue.

Martti and Tero’s Excellent Adventure

On the morning of 19th April I jumped in my car, and headed towards Salo to pick-up Tero for our small road trip towards Kankaanpää, Finland. After few hours of driving, we finally arrived to the Foracer factory, and got to meet the people behind the motion simulators: Janika Vanhatalo, Jukka Leskinen and Joni Leskinen. After a short chat and a cup of coffee, it was time for the fun part: to try out how a proper motion simulator drives! Neither me or Tero had previous experience of anything similar before, so we were really excited to hit the track!

Getting into the simulator was the first impressive thing, it really felt like getting in a proper racing car. By that, I mean that by no means could we just “jump in and drive.” After getting seated, it was time to attach the five point harness, and at that point I really started to get a feeling that I was in for a ride. The immersion of preparing to drive was just totally something else. Even though I have three monitors and a decent chair from a Renault and fairly good steering wheel and pedals at home, sitting in the Foracer simulator was just another world. Before even moving I really felt being in the car.

Tero gets some qualilty seat time in the Foracer motion simulator.

In all honesty, both me and Tero were a bit worried on how a stationary wheel and moving seat could translate to usable and immersive feedback on the track. But after my first proper gear change (as I really had to move the gear lever, this wasn’t a button) I was quite surprised. After the first corner and full acceleration, I didn’t even think about the moving seat anymore. After the first oversteer, when I felt it instead of saw it, I was convinced! The simulator was a blast to drive, and we . . . well, especially I did quite a number of laps around the virtual Finnish race track Botniaring. Both of us were really surprised at how subtle the motion feedback was, but still relaying the extra seat of the pants feeling that is missing in so many home cockpits. And it really didn’t affect the driving or concentration at all.

Of course, a few hours is not quite enough to fully test-out any piece of hardware, not to mention a complete motion simulator. So that is why Foracer invited the drivers to do an iRacing WCGP Series race using their equipment!

On our visit, Foracer had set up their simulator for GT config, but by changing the wheel, seat and seating position and pedals, they are able to build a F1 / open wheel simulator too! I personally can’t wait to get to try that one out! We also got to see some of their upcoming hardware, but at this point I can’t tell anything about them except that they are really interesting for any sim-racing fan! Possibly something to look forward to for the DIY sim-racer too.

“Both of us were really surprised at how subtle the motion feedback was . . .” — Martti Pietilä

Time went by fast and we had to head towards home. The trip went as expected, until I dropped Tero off . . . I thought I would have fuel to the next gas station, but after hitting the highway, I noticed that the fuel consumption was a bit high — heavy throttle foot?  So I had to leave the highway and search for a gas station at some really small town . .  and found one, just when the fuel estimate changed from 3km to —.

Overall, a really fun and interesting trip, and at least I am eagerly waiting for the next chance to sit in the simulator!

Here’s what Tero had to say:

The actual traveling part with Martti was fun and the drive to there and back didn’t feel that long as we constantly had something to talk about. Granted it was mostly sim-racing related going there and then coming back we talked about the Foracer motion simulator, of course!

Foracer’s Jukka Leskinen and Joni Leskinen.

Janika, Jukka and Joni are really nice and the atmosphere was relaxed, which was great for me as I can be a bit shy, quiet and socially awkward when meeting more than one new person at once. I also hadn’t met Martti face to face until that day. But was fine as I didn’t really even realise it was “meeting new people” type of situation and I doubt any off them noticed anything odd about me!

I think both Martti and I had three separate driving sessions in the simulator. And as Martti was driving I had some informative and interesting discussions with Jukka and Joni. Janika had to leave for a meeting fairly soon after we had arrived. It was very clear from early on that they are taking everything seriously and are passionate about making a great motion simulator! If I understood correctly about half the parts in the simulator are off-the-shelf and rest are designed in-house. To me that sounds like a great approach. You don’t want to design and fabricate a part if you can buy an already existing one that fits the purpose, because the latter will most likely always be much cheaper and faster. And of course it’s great to have the resources to design custom parts for your specific needs and you also want to avoid making things too complicated.

“The movement range is crucial to get right. Otherwise it will probably just shake the hell out of you . . .” — Tero Dahlberg

It was really good to hear that they have been and are utilizing knowledge and feedback of race drivers who also have experience in racing-sims and simulators; drivers like Toni Vilander (2012 24 Hours of Le Mans winner in GTE-Pro category) and Matti Alamäki (five-time European Rallycross champion), who I learned has been into racing simulators for years. Proof!

As for the motion simulator itself, like Martti already mentioned, I was a bit unsure of the concept of just moving the seat. I’ve seen videos of various motion simulators and was expecting a lot larger movement range and the movement to be more “violent” for lack of a better word. But the motion feedback felt really good and wasn’t as distracting or intrusive as I had feared. And the smaller than expected movement range didn’t make it feel at all like my butt, torso and head would be moving in relation to the wheel and pedals. While this has been my first experience with a motion simulator, I feel that the movement range is crucial to get right. Otherwise it will probably just shake the hell out of you and doesn’t add to the immersion and enjoyment but rather make you feel like you don’t have enough control as you are “thrown around” in the seat.

I’m also really looking forward to the next time when I get to sit in the motion simulator!

Video: 2013 SRT Viper spends its days living life a quarter mile at a time

2013 SRT Viper drag strip

There are lots of ways to measure the performance of a car, but there's only one that is quintessentially American: the quarter mile. And while we've already seen a proper comparison test or two that puts the new (and also quintessentially American) SRT Viper on a racetrack, we've yet to see what it can do when put in the hands of a proper drag racer for an entire day of tire-burning performance testing. Now we do.

And so the $64,000 question is, How does it perform? Pretty well indeed, recording a best time of 11.1 seconds at 127.4 miles per hour, wearing street-legal drag radials with the boys from Drag Times behind the wheel. That run included 3.1 seconds for the big Viper to hit 60, and it took just 7.1 seconds to reach 100. Impressive performance, to be sure. But those figures need to be put in context for the full picture... in other words, how does its acceleration compare to such high-horsepower rivals as the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and Ford Mustang Shelby GT500?

Well, without running all three of these muscle machines down the same track on the same day with the same driver, it's not going to be a fair comparison. Plus, the Corvette in particular has had several models years for drivers to keep plugging away for the best possible results. That said, the Viper's 11.1 seconds at 127.4 mph is well shy of Drag Times' best recorded (and verified) ZR1 time slip of 10.332 seconds at 132.74 mph, and there are a total of seven documented ZR1 runs quicker than the Viper's.

As for the GT500, the best recorded run on file at Drag Times is 11.570 seconds at 124.3 mph. So, it's not as quick as the Viper or ZR1, but we wouldn't really expect it to be. In any case, it's a fun comparison for bragging rights, but it's anything but scientific. In other words, take all this with a healthy spoonful of salt and stay tuned for more in this space from all three of the American automakers.

Check out a video from Drag Times below, and remember, reaction time doesn't matter in this scenario.

Block slams Brazilian X Games venue

X Games BrazilKen Block has hit out at the organisers of last weekend’s Brazilian X Games, describing the Foz do Iguacu venue as the worst track he has competed on.

Block and many other competitors were critical of the dust and grip levels during the first X Games rallycross event outside of Los Angeles.

After making it to the final, Block was one of four drivers who failed to make it out of a first-corner shunt.

“I came to this event really excited about competing and running my new Fiesta for the first time in competition,” said Block.

“But the event ended up being a real disappointment. Myself, Travis [Pastrana] and Tanner [Foust] all got taken out in Turn 1 of the final, which sucks.

“Combine that with the fact that the track here in Foz is the absolute worst track I’ve ever raced on and it’s just been a tough weekend here in Brazil.

“I’m passionate about racing, especially in the X Games, and unfortunately this track didn’t maintain the level of quality that previous X Games rally courses had.

“I’m hopeful that it gets corrected and improved upon for our next stop in Barcelona.”

Scott Speed won the event, from Toomas Heikkenen and Patrik Sandell.

The next X Games event runs in Spain on May 19.

Valente to return to WTCC in Hungary

Hugo ValenteHugo Valente’s World Touring Car Championship programme in a second Campos SEAT Leon will begin in rounds seven and eight at the Hungaroring on May 4-5.

The 20-year-old Frenchman raced for the team in last year’s Shanghai WTCC rounds, taking 16th and 18th place finishes.

The same year he also finished runner-up in the French SEAT Leon Supercopa.

Campos is already running Fernando Monje in 2013, while sister outfit Tuenti Racing is running Marrakech victor – and now the WTCC’s youngest winner – Pepe Oriola.

Valente, who is set for further outings for the team, says he is eager to see how he matches up against both men.

“I’m very much looking forward to get to know the series more in Budapest, as well as in five other events this year,” he said.

“My goal is to gain as much experience as I can, with the car, tyres and circuits, in order to prepare for the 2014 season in the best possible way.

“I only had two testing days before Budapest, so I am expecting tough races over there. But my goal is to improve compared to my team-mates Pepe Oriola and Fernando Monje.”

Bahrain race quotes: Sauber

Nico Hulkenberg – 12th: “It was a difficult and frustrating weekend. It was clear from the beginning that we were not fast enough and that it would be challenging. We are lacking speed and eat up the rear tyres too much so it simply wasn’t enough this weekend. We pitted a bit too late, because we expected to have more problems on low fuel, which in the end we didn’t have. That cost us at least one position. This weekend clearly showed we need to bring some new parts to Barcelona in order to improve our speed and fight for points.”

Esteban Gutierrez – 18th: “I expected a difficult race and this is what I got. We need to find more speed. On the first lap I had contact down into Turn 10, which was really hard to avoid. Apart from that, things were quite OK, but, of course, finishing a race like this is definitely not enough and we need to improve. We have to analyse the strategy and hopefully we will bring some good updates to Barcelona.”

Monisha Kaltenborn, team principal: “We can’t be satisfied with this race. We knew this track would be difficult for our car, but this cannot be an excuse. It’s important that we gathered a lot of information over the last two races, which we will use as a basis for the development of the car. Nico drove a good race, so it is now our job to provide him with a quicker car. This race was a good example of how exciting Formula 1 can be.”

Tom McCullough, head of track engineering: “It was clear it would be difficult for Esteban starting at the back of the grid. Unfortunately, we had to change the front wing after the first lap. It was then impossible for him to recover from there. Nico’s race went as planned, but we were just not quick enough to score points, so we have to have a good look at our data, regroup and prepare for Barcelona.”

Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe Concept: Prettier than its Namesake [2013 Shanghai Auto Show]

Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe concept

After this year’s Detroit auto show, this writer called the big VW CrossBlue the show’s “best concept,” with the caveat that its styling “doesn’t knock anyone’s socks off.” It featured boxy, upright lines, and was powered by a 306-hp plug-in diesel hybrid powertrain. But a practical package and sensible technology isn’t really exciting. The CrossBlue Coupe concept, shown at the Shanghai auto show, thoroughly buries this concern under its 22-inch aluminum wheels. Redding secures maiden Moto2 pole

Scott Redding, Marc VDS, Austin Moto2 2013Scott Redding produced a stunning late lap in Moto2 qualifying to take his first ever grand prix pole position.

Marc VDS Racing’s Briton was the only rider to go below 2m11s with a last ditch flier to claim top spot by almost seven tenths of a second from Takaaki Nakagami’s Italtrans Kalex.

Nakagami’s 2m11.266s had looked good enough to earn him qualifying honours, while morning practice pacesetter Pol Espargaro’s session never really got going.

The Spaniard, seeking to make it six Moto2 pole positions in a row, ended up seventh fastest on his Pons Kalex machine but never looked like troubling the front two rows throughout the session.

Redding, by contrast, was flying around the twists and turns of the Texan circuit. Yet he seemed on course to miss out on a front row start altogether as Nicolas Terol and Esteve Rabat improved late on.

But Redding’s heroics in the dying seconds saw him pump in a 2m10.577s lap – demoting Terol to third and dumping Rabat onto the second row.

He will be joined on row two by Dominique Aegerter and Simone Corsi.

Injured frontrunner Thomas Luthi had to abandoned his earlier-than-expected comeback as he was still in too much pain during Friday practice.

Under the Lights… Following a one-week hiatus, the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) returns to the track at Richmond International Raceway (RIR) Friday evening for its second-consecutive night race. Justin Allgaier has two previous short-track starts this year at Phoenix International Raceway and Bristol Motor Speedway (BMS). Both events resulted in top-5 starting positions and top-10 finishes, with Allgaier earning the Coors Light Pole Award at BMS.

Honor and Remember… The Gold Star Family program in partnership with Honor and Remember will host the family of Chesterfield, Va. native and U.S. Army SGT Jeffrey Reed at RIR. Reed lost his life March 2, 2009 in Balad, Iraq from wounds he suffered after a grenade hit his vehicle. Reed was just 15 days from returning home from his second deployment after being in Iraq for 14 months. Reed’s family will spend time with Justin on the No. 31 BRANDT hauler Friday afternoon.

This Week’s Camaro… Chassis TSM-333 will once again be put to work in NNS competition this weekend at Richmond International Raceway. This is the same chassis the No. 31 BRANDT Chevy Camaro team used at Phoenix International Raceway and Bristol Motor Speedway.

2013 Point Standings… Heading into the seventh race of the season, Allgaier is currently fourth in the NNS point standings. He’s just nine points behind leader Sam Hornish Jr.

It’s a Girl… Justin and his wife Ashley announced this week that they are expecting a baby girl. The couple’s first child is due at the end of August.

Crew Chief Scott Zipadelli on Richmond International Raceway:

“We are taking chassis No. 333 to Richmond [International Raceway], which has performed well for us this season and seems to have a good balance of speed and grip. The track will change quite a bit over the couple of days that we are there, so we have to be prepared to make a lot of changes. It’s really easy to be good in practice but not run well in the race, but I’ve had some good runs there; it’s one of my favorite tracks.”

Justin Allgaier on Richmond International Raceway:

“You have to be very disciplined at Richmond [International Raceway]. The corners are really tight in the middle and on exit, and it’s extremely hard to pass, so track position is very important. Qualifying well at Richmond is a big deal because of track position, but it’s also tricky because we qualify during the day but race at night and the conditions change so much.”

NNS results at Richmond International Raceway:

Wins: 0

Poles: 0

Top 5: 1

Top 10: 3

2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel EPA-Rated at 46-mpg Highway

Chevrolet has announced that the new-for-2014 Cruze diesel will get an EPA-estimated 46 mpg on the highway and 27 mpg in the city. With its 2.0-liter turbo-diesel making 148 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque matched with a six-speed automatic transmission, the diesel joins the base 1.8-liter four and the optional 1.4-liter turbo four already available in the Cruze powertrain lineup. The addition of the diesel is the news; how its fuel economy stacks up against its siblings and the competition, however, is another matter.

Getting 46 mpg on the highway is a laudable achievement for the diesel; the automatic-equipped Cruze Eco gets 39 mpg and the Eco with the six-speed manual gets 42 mpg. Drill a little deeper, though, and the comparisons become less favorable: the diesel improves on the automatic Eco’s city rating of 26 by only 1 mpg, while the manual betters the diesel’s city rating by 1 mpg.

Then there is the matter of dollars and cents. At $25,695, the Cruze diesel is $4010 more than the Cruze Eco with an automatic and $5205 more than the manual. And with diesel fuel currently costing about 40 cents more per gallon than regular unleaded, it’s going to take owners a whole lot of highway driving to recoup the extra cost of the diesel-engine option.

Chevy wants you to pay no attention to that Cruze Eco behind the curtain, and would instead like you to consider the Volkswagen Jetta TDI as the bow-tie diesel’s real competition. The Jetta costs about $700 less than the compression-ignition Cruze, but the Chevy comes with more standard features, including MyLink infotainment, larger 17-inch aluminum wheels, leather seats, and a two-year maintenance plan. Chevrolet also offers a powertrain warranty that is the same in years (five) but better in miles (100,000 versus the VW’s 60,000). On the fuel-economy front, the Jetta gets ratings of 30/42; that puts the Cruze up by 4 mpg on the highway but down 3 mpg in the city.

The Cruze diesel will go on sale this spring in “high-indexing diesel cities” such as Baltimore and Milwaukee. Later this fall, it will be available nationwide and in Canada. While we’re always glad to see a new choice in the world of compression ignition, we’re still not sure how Chevy’s new diesel is going to find its place in the market. With diesel sales up in 2012 by more than 25 percent according to some estimates, Chevy is hoping the Cruze can get in on some of that oil-burning action.

Graf defeats Heidfeld at Long Beach

Pickett Racing played the perfect strategy to claim a comfortable American Le Mans Series victory on the streets of Long Beach.

Lucas Luhr took advantage of one of three first-hour cautions to pit from second after just 15 minutes, handing over to Klaus Graf.

A stop-start opening hour was led by Neel Jani for Rebellion Racing but Graf had worked his way up to second by the halfway point.

The duo pitted at the same time under the third caution and the Pickett HPD, requiring less fuel and no driver change courtesy of the early stop, jumped the Rebellion Toyota.

Nick Heidfeld gave chase once racing resumed but Graf made better headway through traffic and by the time the #12 car had made it through, Heidfeld was more than 20s adrift – the gap extending to 36s by the finish.

CORE Autosport was third overall with its LMPC machine, Colin Braun and Jonathan Bennett claiming a dominant class victory.

The final place on the rostrum had been left up grabs for the lower classes when Chris Dyson made a mistake 17 minutes in, hitting the wall while chasing erstwhile leader Jani and stopping on circuit; the Dyson Racing team’s race over prematurely.

Luis Diaz and Mike Guasch were second for PR1 in the PC class after a lonely drive, well clear of class polemen Bruno Junqueira and Duncan Ende.

The first three LMPCs were impressively clear of the first LMP2 car of Scott Sharp/Guy Cosmo, which finished sixth overall. Johannes van Overbeek and Ed Brown, the next LMP2, finished eighth.

The LMP2 polesitting Level 5 HPD ran into a series of problems, including a pit penalty.

Bill Auberlen took the GT class win for BMW by stealth, recovering from an opening lap mistake by team-mate Maxime Martin before slipping by long-time leader Dominik Farnbacher in the SRT Viper in the final stages.

The RLL BMW was only fifth fastest in qualifying but steadily worked its way to the front and when Farnbacher ran wide with 20 minutes to go Auberlen took full advantage. The Dirk Muller/Joey Hand shared BMW then snatched second from the #91 Viper on the penultimate lap of the race.

The NGT Porsche just held off the attentions of Flying Lizard duo Spencer Pumpelly and Nelson Canache Jr to take GTC honours, Henrique Cisneros and Sean Edwards – in his first race at Long Beach – claiming the class victory.

New Chinese tie-up for British F3

British F3 SilverstoneChinese racer Sun Zheng is to contest the British Formula 3 International Series with CF Racing as the first protege of a new tie-up to promote the Asian country’s talent into European motorsport.

Sun, 21, will race a Dallara F308 powered by the traditional National Class Mugen Honda spec engine, with his first outing being the opening round at Silverstone on May 25/26.

He is the reigning champion in the junior-level China Formula Grand Prix series for Geely-engined Van Diemens, and took fourth place in last season’s Audi R8 LMS Cup.

Recent test outings have left the North Wales-based CF team optimistic that he will do a good job.

Team boss Hywel Lloyd, who raced with Adderly Fong in British F3 as part of the Sino Vision Racing team, said: “Testing’s gone quite well. He had his first test in the British F3 car at Rockingham, and we were quite pleased with the lap times.

“He’s done further test days at Anglesey and Silverstone, and he’s been getting quicker all the time.

“This is a new partnership with the KRC team at the Zhuhai circuit, who we’ve worked with since our Sino Vision days. They will send over drivers who they think are ready for Europe. It’s a good partnership that we’re looking to build on.”

CF is hoping to field a second car alongside Sun.

Lorenzo declares Marquez phenomenal

Marc MarquezJorge Lorenzo hailed Marc Marquez as ‘phenomenal’ following the Spaniard’s record-breaking MotoGP victory at Austin.

The 2012 world champion and Marquez now share the lead of the ’13 championship on 41 points.

Despite insisting he had not given up on his hopes of victory after qualifying – when he was more than one second slower than Marquez – Lorenzo said the younger Spaniard was simply beyond his reach during the race.

“I want to congratulate Marc, for his record, the youngest winner in history,” Lorenzo said. “He was the best today – phenomenal.

“Yesterday I was so far from Marc and Dani [Pedrosa], but we found something in the morning warm-up, in the slower corners.

“It wasn’t enough. Today third position was the best we could do.”

Lorenzo insisted he was not too disappointed with his podium finish given his belief that Austin favours the Hondas over the Yamahas.

“Winning is winning, third is third,” he said. “Anyway we tried our best.

“This track is probably the worst for us, so finishing third, so close to victory, was something didn’t expect yesterday.

“Unfortunately we needed two tenths we didn’t have.”
