Spotify gift cards now available at Target in $10, $30 and $60 values

If any of you tuning in from the US have ever wondered why you can't buy a Spotify gift card for the internet radio lover in your life, well, you can quit pondering: Target is now selling Spotify credits in its brick-and-mortar stores -- a first in the US. The cards are available in $10, $30 and $60 amounts, which translates to one, three and six months of service, respectively. As you can imagine, you need a Spotify Premium account to redeem them, so make sure whoever you're buying for has a subscription or at least intends to sign up. Still, we have to say: a month of ad-free radio and offline playback could make for a nice last-minute gift, even if the lucky recipient chooses not to hang around after the included free days expire.

2013 Aston Martin DB9 Spy Photos

What It Is: The next-generation Aston Martin DB9 being tested in the United Kingdom. This coupe and Volante—both of which will be available from the car’s launch—were spotted without any sort of camouflage, and we’re told the production versions will look no different when they make their debut. The cars borrow a number of visual cues—including what appears to be their entire front-end treatments—from their Virage counterparts. READ MORE ››

Cricket's Huawei Mercury Ice gets redesigned, hitting Radio Shack Sep. 5

Huawei-Mercury-Ice

Huawei has redesigned, renamed and re-released the Mercury (aka the Huawei Honor), and Cricket is bringing it to Radio Shack on September 5. In addition to the new handle, the phone's face is now offered in a pearl white, and just like we told you yesterday, unlimited MUVE music is part of the package. Fifty dollars a month for unlimited talk, text, data, and music streaming isn't a bad deal at all.

Unfortunately, the software doesn't seem to have been updated and it's still running on Gingerbread under Huawei's tweaks. We've got no information about any pricing, but we expect it to be priced competitively. We just heard back from our tipster, and we now know that the Mercury Ice will check in at $149.99 -- contract free.

Certainly this is no barn burner, but with a fairly decent Ice Cream Sandwich ROM in the wild and a respectable hacking community, it may be worth traveling to your local Radio Shack to have a look. There's a couple more pics after the break

Thanks, Anon!

Sony’s New Xperia Tablet S Features Microsoft Surface-Like Keyboard Cover

Like Microsoft’s upcoming Surface tablet, Sony’s Xperia Tablet S will be sold with a keyboard cover accessory. Photo: Sony

Sony announced a new tablet on Wednesday, and at first glance it looks a lot like last year’s wedge-shaped Tablet S. Heck, the name even sounds the same. This year’s Sony tablet is called the Xperia Tablet S.

In fact, there’s quite a lot that hasn’t changed at all from last year’s model. The screen size (9.4-inches) and resolution (1280 x 800) remains the same. The 1GB of RAM and 16GB, 32GB or 64GB storage options are the same. And the folded-over magazine look from the first Sony tablet is carried over to the new model as well, albeit with a slimmer, more attractive execution on this year’s slate.

But there are some notable upgrades. The Xperia Tablet S packs a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor. The rear camera on the Xperia Tablet S is now 8 megapixels (though the front-side 1-megapixel camera is a carryover from last year). It’s also ever so slightly lighter, at just 1.26 pounds, down from the 1.3-pound Tablet S.

But, much like the upcoming Microsoft Surface, one of the more noticeable features of the Xperia Tablet S is the cover that features a built-in physical keyboard, sold separately for $100.

Sony told Wired it wants the tablet — which will sell for $400 with 16GB of storage, $500 for 32GB of storage and $600 for 64GB — to be seen as a premium second screen to be used in the home.

To that end, the Xperia Tablet S comes with a pre-installed remote-control app that Sony says offers the functionality of a $300 remote. Like the Tablet S before it, the Xperia Tablet S features an IR blaster so the slate can act as a universal remote to control TVs, DVD and Blu-ray players, home stereos and cable boxes, whether they carry a Sony brand or not.

Other interesting features include an anti-glare coating on its display and a splash-resistant (but not waterproof) coating all over — think kitchen companion, not bathtub reader.

The Xperia Tablet S will officially hit retail on Sept. 7, though pre-orders begin today. It runs Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich. We’ve yet to get our hands on a review unit, but as soon as we do, we’ll share our thoughts.

No word yet on whether or not Sony has plans for a follow up to last year’s burrito-shaped Tablet P.

Dan Henderson May Be Injured, UFC 151 Main Event In Jeopardy?

By <a href="mailto:howie@mmanews.com">Chris Howie</a> <Br>
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer<Br><Br>

According multiple reports on Twitter, the UFC 151 main event between Dan Henderson and UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones may be in jeopardy due to what is rumored to be a knee injury suffered by Henderson in training.<Br><Br>

Kenny Florian ‏@kennyflorian<Br>
Hearing that we may have some disappointed @UFC fans soon due to some unfortunate circumstances for an upcoming card<Br><Br>

Luke Thomas ‏@SBNLukeThomas<Br>
@KCBanditMMA @jamiekilstein if what I'm hearing is correct, it's so much worse than what is even being rumored on Twitter.<Br><Br>

Luke Thomas ‏@SBNLukeThomas<Br>
@Jdiddy381 @KCBanditMMA @jamiekilstein again, I'm not talking about Hendo's health when I say the matter is 'worse'. Relax, people.<Br><Br>

Jeremy Botter ‏@jeremybotter<Br>
If what I'm hearing is correct, UFC 151 may be in desperate need of a main event. And that sucks.<Br><Br>

Matt Lindland ‏@mattlindland<Br>
Rumor? @MattHawryluk94: @tarecfighter rumor is Hendo is out with a knee injury, please tell me it is not true!<Br><Br>

Adam Martin ‏@MMAdamMartin<Br>
I am hearing that Dan Henderson may have injured his knee, but is unclear as of this moment whether he has pulled out of the Jon Jones fight<Br><Br>

FrontRowBrian FrontRowBrian ‏@FrontRowBrian<Br>
Rumor going around Hendo was injured by Thierry Sokoudjou at some point in this camp. Appears he'll press on.. if he has to crawl to cage.
Someone described the brace Hendo is wearing as a "Stone Cold Steve Austin brace".<Br><Br>

FrontRowBrian ‏@FrontRowBrian<Br>
Regarding Hendo. Everyone who would know that I know isn't talking. Dana not talking. Something is up.<Br><Br>

Mike Russell ‏@MIKERUSSELLMMA<Br>
My super secret sources tell me that there could, or perhaps could not, be something going on regarding a fight that is coming up.<Br><Br>

Hendo pays to have his levels checked regularly. Doubt it's that.<Br><Br>

FrontRowBrian ‏@FrontRowBrian<Br>
translated, Hendo's BJJ coach says "bad day, and with a really tough decision to be made"<Br><Br>

Henderson followed this all up with a tweet stating he had a great day in training though one of his training partners, Tarec Saffedine, tweeted he hadn't seen Hendo in a few days.<Br><Br>

Maybe there's an injury, maybe it's just mind games, either way all parties involved have been mute on the situation. If an injury does cause the fight, which is just over a week away, to change news will likely come before week's end.<Br><Br>

Jeremy Stephens-Yves Edwards, Mike Pierce-Aaron Simpson Set for FX5 on Oct. 5

http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/UFC...or-Oct-5-45115

Two more bouts have been added to the rapidly developing UFC on FX 5 fight bill. Promotion officials recently announced that lightweights Jeremy Stephens and Yves Edwards will collide at the Oct. 5 event, as will welterweights Mike Pierce and Aaron Simpson.

Minneapolis’ Target Center hosts the FX-broadcast show, which is headlined by a heavyweight confrontation pitting onetime EliteXC champion Antonio Silva against rising talent Travis Browne. The event also showcases the Octagon debut of former top-ranked flyweight Jussier da Silva, as “Formiga” takes on “Ultimate Fighter” Season 14 winner John Dodson.

Stephens, 26, has lost back-to-back bouts after posting four wins in five fights from September 2009 to June 2011. The 14-time Octagon vet last competed on May 15, dropping a lopsided unanimous decision to Donald Cerrone at UFC on Fuel TV 3.

Nearly a 15-year pro, Edwards, 35, owns 60 pro fights to his credit. The “Thugjitsu Master” competed 10 times for the UFC from 2001 to 2006 and returned to the promotion in 2010 to outpoint John Gunderson at Fight Night 22. Most recently, Edwards was outpointed by “TUF 13” winner Tony Ferguson, falling to “El Cucuy” in a unanimous verdict on Dec. 3.

Pierce, 31, is known as one of the welterweight division’s toughest outs. The Oregonian’s three UFC defeats have come at the hands of top talents Jon Fitch, Johny Hendricks and Josh Koscheck, with the latter two losses coming by split decision. Pierce has never been finished in five years as a pro and most recently cruised to a unanimous nod over Carlos Eduardo Rocha at UFC on FX 3.

Simpson is a former middleweight talent who recently cut to 170 pounds, winning his welterweight debut over Kenny Robertson on July 11 at UFC on Fuel TV 4. The 38-year-old has won four of his last five fights heading into his showdown with Pierce, besting Mario Miranda, Brad Tavares and Eric Schafer last year.

Anderson Silva, Junior dos Santos, UFC 150 Fallout: The Morning News Roundup – 8.12.12

UFC 150 is now one for the history books, and the news cycle moves ever onward.  Of course, since most of today's news was gleaned from what was said when the principle players of UFC 150 had a microphone stuck in their faces at the post-fight press conference, it seems like the pay-per-view event headlined by Benson Henderson and Frankie Edgar will linger with us a bit more.  So!  The news!

  • UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva is done for the year, and we won't see him again until 2013.  I guess he and Chael Sonnen did a good job hyping their July UFC 148 fight and those pay-per-view percentage points are really paying out, eh?  Good for him.  Now he has plenty of time to work on his garden and finish tiling the downstairs bathroom of his house in Curitiba, Brazil.

  • Regardless of what Alistair Overeem says or hopes or wants, UFC heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos is fighting top contender Cain Velasquez in December.  Ah, who are we kidding?  We've seen this scenario play out before.  The UFC is going to book Dos Santos versus Velasquez, and then Velasquez is going to get injured, and Overeem will step in.  Then Overeem is going to test positive for horse meat in a pre-fight screening and Frank Mir is going to get a call the day of the fight and he's going to have to hop off his couch and come down to the arena and fight, and, well, you know how that goes.

  •  As per UFC president Dana White at the post-fight presser, should Edgar move down to featherweight, a title shot against champ Jose Aldo is not guaranteed.  Now ain't that some [expletive].  Either way, Edgar is moving on, and so should you.

  • Strikeforce female bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey cleaned her house.  Seriously, if you watched her "All Access" episode earlier this week, the place resembled a crack den.  And not like a well-kept crack den, either.  More like a crack den whose occupants really have no cares whatsoever about appearances.

  • One more item that I'm putting out there: allegedly, a fighter in an amateur event in South Carolina died last night after his fight.  I won't release the name until we get further confirmation, but the event was a local one called "Fight Night at the Point VI", and it's suspected that the fighter — who was making his debut — suffered a heart attack.  The event was fully-sanctioned by the athletic commission.  Apparently, after the incident, the commission canceled the rest of the card.  I'll report more as the story develops.  UPDATE: Here's something from a local news outlet.

LG Optimus L9 hands-on (video)

LG Optimus L9 handson

Thought LG didn't have any more to add to the L-Style series to offer the world? Behold the L9. Announced yesterday, the device made an appearance on the IFA show room floor this week, boasting a big and bright 4.7-inch IPS display that makes its brethren look downright shrimpy by comparison. In spite of the display size, the phone feels light, with an 8.9-millimeter profile.

It's important to note here that, in spite of being the king of the L-Series, it's still part of a budget lineup, and as such, the phone's body feels a bit plasticky, and the textured rear had a bit of trouble staying snapped in place in the two models (black and white) that we played with. Specwise, we're talking a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM inside, 4GB of storage (expandable via a microSD slot) and a 2,150mAh battery. The handset's rocking Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.4, to be precise).

The handset's got a fairly nice bezel, with the front-facing camera on the top and a home button on the bottom, flanked by illuminating back and menu touch buttons. A larger, 5MP camera is located on the rear of the device, above the flash. Vodafone has the handset priced at €50.90 subsidized and €340 unsubsidized. Peep a video of the handset, after the break.

UFC bantamweight Eddie Wineland likes his danger in the cage, not behind the wheel

When things get a little rough for Eddie Wineland in the octagon, he still walks away.

Sometimes, they get a little rough and he still walks away with a victory, as was the case against Scott Jorgensen this past June. Wineland delivered arguably the biggest win of his career - despite one of the nastiest cuts in UFC history streaming blood down his face.

As a firefighter when he's not in the cage, Wineland has seen his share of rough situations.

Amazon says Kindle Fire completely 'sold out'; successor's announcement expected next week

Amazon Kindle Fire

Amazon today announced that it has completely sold out of the Kindle Fire, which quickly rose to prominence as the 7-inch tablet to have in late 2011 before being overtaken (in prestige, at least) by the $199 7-inch Google Nexus 7 this summer.

Amazon, still without citing any actual sales numbers, said that the Kindle Fire has "captured 22 percent of tablet sales in the U.S." It didn't give a source for that percentage either. Regardless, there's no denying that the Kindle Fire has been a hot device, even in the sales figures, opaque at best, remain disputed.

Last week we ran an unscientific poll in our sidebar, asking readers the simple question: Kindle Fire, Nook Tablet or Nexus 7. Out of more than 3,100 responses, the message was clear, at least from our readers:

Kindle Fire poll

And so that brings us to the present. Amazon has an event scheduled for Sept. 6 in Los Angeles, presumably to announce a new version of the Kindle Fire, which is all but certain now that it's no longer selling the original. The question now is whether whatever it brings to the table will continue to compete both in specs, features and, most important, price, particularly with the expectation that Apple will release a smaller iPad this fall.

Tune in next week as we find out, folks.

Toshiba 84-inch 4K Quad Full HD TV hands-on (video)

Toshiba 84inch 4K Quad Full HD TV handson video

84 seems to be the magic number at IFA. 84 inches, that is, when it comes to 4K TVs. Sony announced its jumbo 4K set at yesterday's press conference, and now Toshiba has returned with a matching high-res model of its own. The Toshiba set has a slightly sleeker housing, aided by the fact that it didn't have side-mounted speakers as with Sony's flavor -- though, if you're able to afford a (yet-unpriced) TV of this caliber, a premium surround-sound rig better be on the agenda as well. The picture quality, as you might expect, was fantastic. You'll see individual pixels once you're within a few feet of the display, but given its 84-inch footprint, you're going to want to position yourself quite a distance from the panel in order to take it all in.

Toshiba had three sets on display, running through loops of game play, cityscapes and some decked-out human models. The ambient setting was favorably configured, and with ideal content colors were vibrant and the picture was incredibly bright and sharp during our demo, even when viewed from a slight angle. There was a hint of reflection, but only when a dark image popped into frame, despite a multitude of visual noise in the area. You'll need to see Toshiba's 84-inch, 3,840 x 2,160-pixel TV in person to get the full effect (perhaps after it launches early next year), though you can take a (low-res) peek in our gallery below and the video after the break. You can also get a feel for the size -- keep an eye out for the Galaxy Note in the bottom left corner in the shot above.
