Giammaria takes pole on debut
Raffaele Giammaria took a stunning pole position on his debut in the International Superstar Series at Pergusa in Sicily.
Drafted into the Romeo Ferraris Mercedes squad as a late replacement for Camillo Zurcher, the GT Sprint regular backed up his free practice pace by storming to a comfortable pole position.
Giammaria did so by becoming the first man all weekend to dip into the 1m42s bracket, starting with a 1m42.750s effort 10 minutes into the session, before lowering it to a 1m42.589s very late in the going.
The next best was Max Pigoli, the Ferlito Jaguar driver managing a best of 1m43.158s to secure a front-row start. Pigoli has not won a race since taking the season opener at Monza back in April.
Another late addition to the grid, Solaris Chevrolet’s Simone Iacone, rounded out a very unexpected top three. Iacone even spent several minutes sitting on top of the sheets before Giammaria’s charge, ultimately settling for a solid third place.
Giammaria’s team-mate Andrea Larini was fourth, leading home Thomas Biagi, who was impressive in the underpowered Dinamic BMW, and Francesco Sini in the other Solaris Chevrolet.
Title contender Tonio Liuzzi failed to convert his promising practice speed into a qualifying result, the CAAL Racing Mercedes driver recording just the seventh fastest time.
Still, it was much better than his title rival Johan Kristoffersson could manage. With the KMS Audi too heavy to attack the kerbs, the Swede was forced to settle for 14th place, second last of the drivers who actually set a flying lap.
Right at the back of the field, two big names failed to record a time. Just like in free practice one, Gianni Morbidelli found himself sitting the session out after trying to tackle a kerb in the overweight Audi Sport Italia RS5, and breaking a front shock absorber.
And free practice two pacesetter Luigi Ferrara also had a shocker, crashing his Roma Racing Mercedes on his first attempt at a flying lap.

Gilbert Melendez not guaranteed to be ready for January fight
After axing two events, Strikeforce is in desperate need of a positive boost and hoped to have one in the works for January when the organization plans to return to the airwaves with a stacked lineup. Though not officially announced, the card has been associated with efforts from a number of champions including lightweight title-holder Gilbert Melendez.
However, according to Melendez’s manager (who also happens to be his father), the talented 30-year old is still healing up from a shoulder injury he suffered in September and may not be ready in time for a fight so soon.
“There’s no definite yes. It all depends if his body is healing on time as we anticipate,” said the elder Melendez of his son’s health in a conversation with MMAJunkie. “We’ll know more in mid-November.”
“El Nino” Comments on Injury, Cancelled Card
Melendez’s health-related woe forced him to withdraw from a title-defense against Pat Healy that ultimately inspired Showtime/Strikeforce to scrap the show. Prior to the unfortunate situation, Melendez had won seven straight fights including title-defenses against Josh Thomson, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Jorge Masvidal, and Shinya Aoki.

Cung Le: Biggest fight of his career; He is only 80%.
| Cung Le: Rich Franklin fight is biggest of my career Cung Le has had a lot of high points in his athletic career. He's won amateur wrestling titles, earned an absolute slew of kickboxing titles and held a title in Strikeforce's middleweight division. Despite all of that, Le believes the best is yet to come. Le is scheduled to face former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin at UFC on FUEL TV 6 in Macau, China on November 10th. It's something of a surprising match-up. Franklin was openly lobbying for a last run at a title at light heavyweight as recently as UFC 147, but will now face Le at middleweight instead. And Le, age 40, could quit fighting altogether while focusing solely on acting. According to the Vietnamese-American, he could leave MMA, but his UFC experience has kept his competitive fire alive. He lost a fight to Wanderlei SIlva in his UFC debut at UFC 139, but controlled most of the contest prior to that. Le also followed up that commendable performance with a win over Patrick Cote at UFC 148. In Le's mind, his fighting career is still building after some thought he'd be retired by now and on November 10th, it'll reach the highest point in his fight career. "A lot of people thought after I fought Wanderlei [Silva] I was going to be done," Le told Ariel Helwani on Monday's The MMA Hour. "But look at me now: two fights into my contract and I'm getting ready to fight the biggest fight of my life against Rich Franklin. It doesn't get any better than this. It's like a dream come true for me." That could be a surprising statement to some. Le fought a high-profile, co-promoted bout by EliteXC and Strikeforce against then-Strikeforce middleweight champion Frank Shamrock. The bout aired on Showtime and took place in the hometown of both fighters: San Jose, California. Le had hype, but plenty of doubters. He was also a fairly heavy betting underdog. Rather than fold under the pressure, Le shined. In front of more than 16,000 mixed martial arts fans at the HP Pavilion, Le broke Shamrock's arm with a thunderous kick, forcing the bout to be called to a halt after the third round. He became the Strikeforce middleweight champion in the process. Le admits that fight was important and still reserves the right to change his mind about how big it is depending on the outcome, but says there are too many factors that make this Franklin fight special. "For me in my career right now fighting someone like Rich as a main event - fighting Shamrock was the biggest fight of my career at the time - but right now this is the biggest fight of my career," he said. To the AKA-trained fighter, he can't overlook the fact that he's never headlined a UFC show. He also recognizes he's never faced a fighter this good before. And while things are going well in his acting career (he has a role in the new movie 'The Man With the Iron Fists'), this main event bout in China is the culmination of not jus his late-career push, but everything he's done up until now. He also couldn't pass up the opportunity to compete in China. Le told Helwani he's only '80 percent' as he hasn't had proper time to heal a foot injury. But the card taking place in China - where Le has previously competed in kickboxing - made the idea of missing the event a non-starter. "Definitely if this fight wasn't in Macau, China, even if I was in a main event somewhere else, I'd give myself the right amount of time so my foot could really heal." So why go forward with it? For the honor of competing in a place where Le feels it all began. "I feel like martial arts basically started from China and my roots are the Chinese martial arts," he said. This is why Le got into MMA: the big fight, the big opponent, the big stage. No one was really sure how long he'd be able to compete in MMA between his acting career and his age. But here he is, doing well and arguably better than ever. "This is why I do it," he said. "I could just be doing movies, but I love to compete. I love to train martial arts. This is what I love to do. Here's my opportunity. To do it in China, it's awesome." |
More confident in Franklin winning the fight now.

Lorenzo: Overcoming Honda very hard
Jorge Lorenzo declared his second MotoGP world championship incredibly hard to win, after clinching the crown with second place in Australia.
Lorenzo’s maiden title in 2010 was won in a year when Yamaha was the pacesetting team and his team-mate Valentino Rossi was ruled out for several races due to injury.
This year Honda was often the quicker team, and Lorenzo had to fight a rearguard action to cling on to his points lead as Dani Pedrosa closed in.
It had been a three-way battle before Casey Stoner was injured at Indianapolis. Even after the Australian was sidelined, Pedrosa kept the pressure on until his mistake at Phillip Island on Sunday left Lorenzo free to secure the title.
“I’m really, really happy with this championship,” said Lorenzo.
“Only we know how difficult it is to fight with riders like Casey, like Dani, and with factories like Honda.
“It’s very hard. You must be very consistent, never make a mistake, always try to finish the races and be very focused.
“Today is a special day. I want to thank all the people who believed in me and wanted me to win.”

Randy Couture: If Chael Sonnen can make Jon Jones bout a wrestling match, he can win
| |
By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief
"I think, at the end of the day, it's a business decision. This is a business, and Chael Sonnen is gonna bring it and hype up any single fight he's in. I think Jon Jones, in denying him the fight on eight days notice, made it inevitable that they were gonna have to fight at some point. I think I would have [rather] taken him on an eight days' training camp than on a full training camp, but I'm not Jon Jones. I think Chael has a great opportunity to win this fight, actually. Technically, I see a similar style fight as Anderson Silva. If he wades through it and can make Jon Jones wrestle him, I think he can win that. I think he can do it, but he needs to make it a wrestling match, start to finish."
-Speaking with Spike TV's MMA Uncensored Live, UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture articulates how he believes Chael Sonnen can be successful against Jon Jones next April (transcribed by MMAMania.com.
Penick's Analysis: Sonnen absolutely has to make this a wrestling match, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll succeed even if he does. Jones is the taller, lankier man, and he's got a very good wrestling game of his own. He's neutralized attempts by other fighters to get him to the ground, including another very good wrestler in Rashad Evans. Sonnenis giving up size, reach, punching power, and a lot more in this fight, and though wrestling alone may be his only hope, the chances of him succeeding start to finish against Jones are very slim.

Jon Jones, Cub Swanson and Vinny Magalhaes: UFC 152′s Three Stars
After waiting way too long for fights, UFC 152 delivered with mostly exciting bouts. There's no need to discuss Matt Hamill's bout with Roger Hollett. Instead, let's talk about the fighters who truly stood out on Saturday night in Toronto. Here are Cagewriter's three stars. Tell us yours in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.
No. 1 star -- Jon Jones: The light heavyweight champion has barely faced adversity in fights, but Vitor Belfort gave it to him with an early armbar attempt. Jones got out of the submission, and then beat up Belfort for four rounds until an Americana submission ended the fight in the fourth round.
No. 2 star -- Cub Swanson: His knockout of Charles Oliveira was one of the weirder knockouts in recent memory. Oliveira was hurt by a body shot. Swanson then hit Oliveira with a left in the head, and Oliveira stood there for a second before falling to the ground. Slow motion knockouts are just as effective, and Swanson is now 3-0 in 2012. Every win was by knockout.
No. 3 star -- Vinny Magalhaes: It's been three years since Magalhaes was in the UFC. He reminded fans of his grappling prowess with a perfectly executed armbar of Igor Pokrajac. It was the exact move you would expect out of a jiu-jitsu world champ.

Cung Le admits he won’t be 100% entering UFC on Fuel 6 bout with Rich Franklin
When the UFC called middleweight Cung Le about fighting in November his initial reaction was likely to decline the offer, requiring more time to get ready after injuring his foot in July. However, once the company revealed the card was scheduled to mark the UFC’s debut in China it became a no brainer for Le.
Le spent a number of years fighting in Asia as a San Shou competitor and has a great deal of respect for China’s history where martial arts are concerned. Throw in the added bonus of a legendary opponent, and Le went from hesitant to head-over-heels about the opportunity being sent his way on November 10 at UFC on Fuel 6.
“A lot of people thought after I fought Wanderlei Silva I was going to be done. But look at me now: two fights into my contract and I’m getting ready to fight the biggest fight of my life against Rich Franklin. It doesn’t get any better than this. It’s like a dream come true for me,” said Le in an interview with The MMA Hour, though he also admitted, “Definitely if this fight wasn’t in Macau, China, even if I was in a main event somewhere else, I’d give myself the right amount of time so my foot could really heal.”
Le Not Ready to Retire Just Yet
The former Strikeforce champion suffered the damage in clash with Patrick Cote at UFC 148, exiting the match-up with the foot grossly swollen though not necessarily broken. With the number of kicks associated with his offense, fans might question how well Le will be able to perform come showtime in a few weeks. Then again, considering how excited Le is about facing Franklin in China, chances are his adrenaline will mask any pain and fans will be treated to a fantastic fight between two game competitors.

2013 Maserati GranTurismo Sport Coupe and Convertible Driven, We’ll Take One of Each
Maserati is beginning to act its age. Sales, build quality, and reliability all have been on a steady ascent since the maker introduced the current Quattroporte back in 2003. The previous decades saw the manufacturer lead an existence typified by exotic exteriors wrapped around temperamental hardware. But the new method seems to be working, and not just for four-doors: In 2011 alone, Maserati managed to peddle nearly 2700 GranTurismos, almost a third of them right here in the land of eagles and apple pie. To help keep the GT’s momentum, Maserati brought the coupe and convertible in for a quick makeover before the Levante SUV and sub-Quattroporte Ghibli sedan arrive next year and steal all the headlines. Webber rues ‘demoralising’ KERS loss
Mark Webber bemoaned the ‘demoralising’ loss of KERS which compromised his race and left him clinging on to the final step of the podium in India.
The Australian had been running a comfortable second in the early stages but from one-third race distance said he began to suffer from intermittent KERS issues.
In the closing stages, that left him increasingly vulnerable to Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, who was ultimately able to coast past on the back straight, and then the McLaren of Lewis Hamilton.
Webber managed to fend the Briton off over the final three laps to hang on to third, but admitted that was little comfort given his pre-race victory ambitions.
Asked about when his KERS issues began, Webber said: “I think it was around lap 19-20, maybe a bit earlier.
“It was on and off, and then completely off. It was a moving target.
“We needed to screw around with brake balance, and just manage as best we could [to not] lose rhythm and tempo.
“We needed to keep the focus, but it is so demoralising on that straight with no KERS – it is not really a battle.”
Webber had been able to pull away from Alonso the middle stage of the race, only to once again drop back into the Spaniard’s clutches as his KERS gave out.
He then came under pressure from Hamilton, but was able to hang on and seal third by just seven tenths of a second.
“I managed to break DRS and get away from Fernando, [when the] KERS there or thereabouts.
“Then the blue flags did nothing for backmarkers, the guys don’t know how much they kill us in the corners.
“When I had no KERS Fernando came past – they have good top gear – and that was it.
“I pushed as strong as possible to get to the end of the race, but I was lucky Lewis made a mistake on lap 57.
“That was important because he was starting to get a bit of momentum. I was keen to keep him out of DRS as much as possible.
“I am pretty happy with how I drove but not enough – we could have got more points today for sure.”

Chad Mendes off the hook after battery charge dropped in California
It’s not uncommon for physical altercations to break out at local watering holes regardless of the region in question. However, it’s fairly rare for a bar brawl to involve a known Mixed Martial Artist let alone one of the best featherweights in the world.
Former UFC title-contender Chad Mendes, unfortunately, found himself mixed up in such a scenario earlier this year when a fight broke out at a bar in California where he allegedly struck a patron before evading authorities. Though Mendes faced up to six months behind bars due to the battery charge attached to the situation, the 27-year old grappler can now put the matter behind him.
Initial Report of Mendes’ Run in with the Law
According to a press release from his manager, the charge was reduced to a public disturbance, allowing Mendes to pay a fine and move on with his life.
Mendes is currently scheduled to face Hacran Dias on December 14 at UFC on FX 6 where he’ll look to score a second straight win since stumbling against champion Jose Aldo in January.

French GP in line for 2013 return
Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is ready to sign a deal that could put the French Grand Prix back on the calendar next year.
Just a week after the planned New Jersey race was postponed because the venue was not going to be ready in time, Ecclestone revealed in India on Sunday that a replacement race was on the cards.
When asked if there was a chance for the French GP to return, Ecclestone said: “As far as I am concerned, yes. I am hoping.
“We are ready to sign; we have a pen and are ready to sign.”
French officials have been close several times to getting their race back on the schedule for the first time since 2008, but it had appeared their hopes were dashed when the original 20-race calendar, which was published by the FIA at the end of last month, did not include a slot for them.
There have been separate pushes by both Magny-Cours and Paul Ricard for an event, but it appears the latter venue is now more likely to secure a deal if the race is put on.
Ecclestone said, however, there he was not sure yet which of the bids would be most successful.
“Which circuit they are going to use is another thing,” he explained.
The French GP could be easily positioned in the calendar in the gap that has been opened up by the absence of the New Jersey race.
The Canadian GP takes place on June 9, with the British GP at Silverstone taking place on June 30.
Ecclestone added: “If they are ready we can slot it in the calendar.”

Aston commits to Asian Le Mans
Aston Martin is the first manufacturer to commit to the new-for-2013 Asian Le Mans Series with the announcement of a partnership deal with a Far Eastern team.
Craft Racing AMR, which is run by former British Formula 3 Championship racer Mark Goddard, will run Aston Martin Vantage V12 GT3s in the six-race championship next year with support from the factory. It has firm plans to run two cars in the GTC class of the series and could run as many as four.
World Touring Car Championship and GT driver Darryl O’Young, who is also the team’s marketing director, will lead the line-up in one car. Team owner Frank Yu will drive the other car.
Goddard, whose team has bases at Zhuhai in China and Sepang in Malaysia, said: “We have two cars confirmed and are working on a third and a fourth. The plan is to have the strongest driver possible with Darryl so that we can win the class and gain the guaranteed entry for next year’s Le Mans 24 Hours [which is expected to be awarded to the winner of the GTC category].”
Goddard, who has been involved in the Far Eastern racing scene for nearly 20 years, believes the Asian series will be a success.
“GT racing is developing slowly but surely in Asia,” he said. “There are enough drivers out here already driving these cars who have the interest in going to the next step.
“I know of at least one other manufacturer that is going to announce plans for the Asian series soon and a couple of privateer teams as well.”
The Asian Le Mans Series was officially launched on Saturday at the Shanghai World Endurance Championship finale.
The six-race calendar was confirmed with three races in China and one each in Indonesia, South Korea and Japan.
Series boss Mark Thomas has revealed that he is aiming for a grid of more than 20 cars. The series is open to LMP2, LMPC and GTE machinery, as well as a GTC category that will incorporate GT3, GT300 cars from the Super GT Series in Japan and one-make cup cars.

DREAM putting on New Year’s Eve event in Japan
With Halloween around the corner it seems natural to see things brought back from the dead as was the case this week when Japanese promotion DREAM held a press conference announcing a December 31 show at Saitama Super Arena. DREAM’s parent company went bankrupt earlier this year, though Dutch company Glory Sports International has stepped in to help fund the event.
The still-developing card will feature appearances from Satoru Kitaoka, Hiroyuki Takaya, and Tatsuya Kawajiri. It will also involve a blend of kickboxing bouts in addition to the standard MMA fare.
Kawajiri Focused on Featherweight Future, Not Lightweight Past
News of DREAM’s return was confirmed by officials at a press conference announcing the card.
Tuning in to DREAM action has become a staple on New Year’s Eve for hardcore fans over the past few years. No word was given on if DREAM will stick around beyond the recently revealed lineup.

Official: GM pumping $450M into Argentine plant for new model
Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, GM, South America
General Motors has announced that it will invest $450 million in its Rosario Automotive Complex in Argentina between 2013 and 2015. The cash will go toward tooling up for an all-new Chevrolet product to be exported globally. Details concerning what that new vehicle could be or where exactly it will be sold are nil, though GM said it will be based on a current global platform and that it will serve both regional and domestic markets.
All told, the Rosario plant built 135,000 vehicles last year, and the influx of cash will help expand that operation considerably. You can check out the brief press release below for more information.
