Jon Jones takes stance on TRT

Though his career is still blossoming, UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones has already faced a number of seasoned veterans in his career including former champions such as Lyoto Machida, Quinton Jackson, and Mauricio Rua. However, when he meets Dan Henderson in the Octagon at UFC 151 it will be a completely new experience for him based on the 41-year old’s use of Testosterone Replacement Therapy.

TRT has been a hot topic in MMA over the past few years, as a good deal of the community feels it is akin to using performance enhancing drugs while others argue it’s a natural substance an athlete needs to slow down the effects of aging. Jones gave his own opinion on the matter Tuesday during a conference call with media where his disdain for the practice was evident.

“I believe that if you’re healthy enough to play a sport you shouldn’t take any performance enhancing drugs or any testosterone. Fighters make a lot of money in their 20s, make a lot of money in their 30s, but when you’re in your 40s you’re in your 40s. I don’t think you should be able to take a drug to make you as strong as you were in your 30s,” said Jones, adding he had no problem with non-athletes using it in a safe, medicinal way.

The 25-year old Jones will find out how much, if at all, Henderson has been aided by TRT when they fight on September 1. However, for the time being, count “Bones” among the growing contingent of fighters, fans, promoters, and media members critical of TRT’s increased impact on the sport.

Sony Xperia Tablet S official: slimmed-down design, Tegra 3, IR remote and Android 4.0, starts at $400

Looks like those leaked slides showing Sony's Xperia-branded tablet were right about pretty much everything. (Well, everything except the price, anyway). The company just formally announced the Xperia Tablet S and, as rumored, it features a Tegra 3 chip, Android 4.0 and up to 64GB of built-in storage. Like last year's Tablet S, it has that distinctive folded-over magazine shape, except this go-round it's made of metal, and measures between .35 and .47 inches thick (the weight, too, has dropped to 1.26 pounds, down from 1.31). Sony also kept the Tablet S' IR emitter, which allows the tablet to double as a universal remote, and this time you can program shortcuts to do things like watch sports. Rounding out the spec sheet, there's a full-size SD slot, a 1,280 x 800 IPS screen and a 6,000mAH battery promising ten hours of runtime.

As we mentioned, the tablet will ship with Ice Cream Sandwich, but Sony is promising an upgrade to Jelly Bean as soon as it can optimize all its custom apps. And indeed, there are quite a few specialized applications here. For starters, there's a new Watch Now app that allows for live TV-viewing (cable subscription required), with the option to "check into" shows and share comments on Facebook and Twitter. Meanwhile, Sony added a Guest Mode that lets you create custom user profiles, forbidding the use of certain apps -- a handy parental control tool, we say. Naturally, Sony also threw in Music and Video Unlimited, where you can buy content from Sony's vast movie and song catalogs. Finally, the tablet comes with 5GB of space in PlayMemories, Sony's new cloud storage service.

The tablet will be available September 7th, though Sony is accepting pre-orders starting today. It will start at $400 for the 16GB model, with the 32GB going for $500 and the 64GB for $600. And yes, as those leaked slides indicated, there will most certainly be accessories. For starters, there's that optional Surface-style keyboard we heard about, priced at $100. There's also a three-position stand, with HDMI output and a USB adapter for a charging. That, too, costs $100. Sony is also selling a charging cradle ($40), a plain-Jane stand ($25), a dock speaker ($130) and a carrying case, priced at either $51 or $80, depending on whether or not you get it in leather. We very much expect to get some hands-on time at IFA, so stay tuned for first-hand impressions.

Mizugaki-Hougland, Urushitani-Lineker move from UFC 151 to UFC on FUEL TV 6 in Macau

Two more bouts have found their new homes in the wake of Thursday's cancellation of UFC 151, but they'll have to wait an extra 10 weeks.

A bantamweights booking between Takeya Mizugaki and Jeff Hougland and a flyweight contest between Yasuhiro Urushitani and John Lineker have been moved to UFC on FUEL TV 6.

UFC on FUEL TV 6 takes place Nov. 10 at Cotai Arena at the Venetian Macau Resort Hotel. Macau is a special administrative region of China, marking the UFC's first trip to the country.

Colin Monahan Named Marketing Coordinator at Infineon Raceway

Colin Monahan has been named Marketing Coordinator at Infineon Raceway, raceway officials announced.

Monahan, 23, will assist the marketing team with the planning and execution of event-related initiatives and programs, coordinate off-site tradeshows and promotions, and oversee the raceway's Little Racers Club and social networking efforts, among his many other responsibilities.

Monahan originally joined the team in 2009 and has worked as an intern and part-time employee the past three seasons. He graduated from Sonoma State University in 2011 with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. He is a native of Yorba Linda (Calif.), currently living in Novato in the North Bay.

Chad Mendes charged with battery for role in July bar brawl

After investigating the matter for the past few weeks the Kings County District Attorney’s office has officially charged UFC featherweight Chad Mendes with battery after the 27-year old allegedly punched an unsuspecting patron at an establishment in his hometown of Hanford, California. The July 29 attack is said to have occurred while Mendes was fleeing from police who wanted to speak with him after they were called to address multiple fights outside of a local bar.

If found guilty, Mendes could be fined $2,000 and spend up to six months behind bars. He is currently scheduled to be arraigned on September 19.

According to a comment from the sheriff’s office to local media outlet the Hanford Sentinel, the victim of Mendes’ “sucker punch” felt lucky to escape the situation with little more than a contusion given the Team Alpha Male staple’s success as a Mixed Martial Artist.

Mendes’ representatives have publicly denied the accuracy of the authorities’ account.

The 12-1 Mendes last fought on July 7 where he stopped opponent Cody McKenzie with strikes. He has not been attached to any upcoming bouts though speculation has surfaced stating the former title-contender could be Frankie Edgar’s first foe at 145 pounds.

Chael Sonnen says he is fighting Forrest Griffin, wants to make run at light heavyweight belt

Chael Sonnen hasn't given up his dream on winning a UFC world championship. For the time being though, he's giving up on winning it as a middleweight.

After a pair of losses to 185-pound king Anderson Silva, Sonnen announced Tuesday on UFC Tonight on Fuel TV that is jumping to light heavyweight and will fight Forrest Griffin on Dec. 29 in Las Vegas.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the move with Cagewriter about a half-hour after the show.

"Chael wants to fight at 205," White said. "He felt he had his run at 185 and now he wants to make a run at the title at 205."

Sonnen, the master of trash talk, dumped on light heavyweight champion Jon Jones as he made his announcement. He said though he felt he could win the belt in his first bout in the division, he needed to win a fight in the division to set himself up as a legitimate contender.

As a result, Sonnen will fight Griffin. They met once already, on Sept. 6, 2003, on an International Fighting Championship card in Denver. Griffin won with a triangle choke submission in the first round. Ironically, Sonnen's title fight against Silva at UFC 117, which he dominated for four-and-a-half rounds, ended when Silva got the submission with a triangle.

I could go up to 205 and I could take Jon Jones' belt the same as I could take his candy on Halloween. [He's] a little punk kid, I'd snatch it away all I want. But there's something to be said in sportsmanship for earning your shot. And on the 29th of December, I'm going to go through Forrest to do it.

The bout is intriguing on a number of levels. Though Sonnen was nearly 230 pounds a month before he fought Michael Bisping in January, Griffin is the naturally bigger man.

And though Griffin hasn't looked good in the last year -- White said he looked old after his split-decision win over Tito Ortiz at UFC 148 in July -- a win over him still carries significance.

"If he can beat Forrest, he'd be on his way [toward title contention]," White told Cagewriter. "Forrest has some good wins and he's an ex-light heavyweight champion. He has awesome credentials. Forrest is a big guy, a real big guy, and that will be a big test for Chael."

Jones will defend his championship at UFC 151 on Sept. 1 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas against Dan Henderson.

If Jones survives that fight, there are no logical contenders. White awarded the next title shot to Lyoto Machida after Machida knocked out Ryan Bader in Los Angeles on Aug. 4. Jones, though, has already beaten Machida.

Sonnen would inject a bit of life into the division. And though Jones would be a heavy favorite against him, Sonnen's wrestling would probably at least ensure that Jones wouldn't be able to easily take him down and beat him up with the vicious elbows for which he's become known.

First, though, Sonnen has to get through Griffin, whom he lavished with praise on UFC Tonight.

Since becoming friends and competitors with him, I've also become a fan. I watched him win the world championship. I watched him etch his name in stone as a guaranteed future Hall of Famer.

If Sonnen wins, he'd be in the mix for a shot in early 2013. What that would mean for Griffin's future isn't nearly as clear. White declined to say he'd force Griffin to retire as an active fighter should he lose, but the UFC president has raised the topic before.

White would likely do with Griffin what he did with Chuck Liddell, the ex-light heavyweight champion who kept getting knocked out in his final few fights. White publicly urged Liddell to retire and then gave him a front-office job with the UFC. He'd like do the same thing with Griffin.

Ryan Reed’s iRacing for Diabetes  Slated for August 28 & September 4

Ryan Reed considers himself a lucky young man.  That’s odd, considering he not only developed Type 1 diabetes (T1D) a couple of years ago but the condition threatened to derail his promising career as a race driver.

A native of Bakersfield, CA Reed rose through the ranks of karting to Legends and Super Late Models and was preparing to move to North Carolina to drive for Kyle Busch’s team in early 2011 when he began feeling under the weather.  He returned to California where doctors determined he was suffering from T1D.
Ryan’s response was “When can I race again?”

“I let Kyle know about my situation so he could fill my seat,” he continues. “Then I immediately began looking into other athletes with T1D who had successful careers.  I didn’t want to give up; I wanted to do everything I could.  I didn’t want to leave any meat on the bone.”

What Reed found were names like NHL Hall of Famer Bobby Clarke, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Brandon Morrow, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and IndyCar driver Charlie Kimball.  Reed consulted specialist Anne Peters, Director of’ the University of Southern California’s Clinical Diabetes Program.  Together, they developed a program designed to get Ryan back on the track – and keep him there.  The program includes a strict diet and a religious fitness program, along with a glucose monitor in the race car and drink system that allows him to maintain his blood sugar levels during races.

So far so good . . . and that’s putting it mildly.   Reed returned to action midway through 2011 and competed in the Pro Allstars Series, NASCAR Whelen All American and the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, doing well enough to land a deal with Venturini Motorsports in this year’s ARCA Racing Series.  With a fifth place finish at Chicagoland Speedway and four more top fives to his credit, Reed is in the hunt for a top ten finish in the ARCA standings and is fourth overall in the ARCA rookie standings.

“Sometimes it’s hard to believe,” says Reed.  “I went from a place where people were telling me my career was over and spending four or five months not competing, to now being back in the position where I hope to be able to compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup before long.  We’ve been running real strong in ARCA the past few races, finishing consistently in the top ten, top five, and if we keep running consistently I think we can win one.”

In addition to Dr. Peters, one of the secrets to Reed’s success is iRacing.com.  A dedicated sim-racer, Reed uses iRacing to keep himself sharp when he’s not in the car and to prepare for upcoming races.   With a busy schedule that includes Super Late Models back in California, cross country trips to the Venturini shop, personal appearances and ARCA races, his spare time is precious.

Reed is among the leading rookies in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards.

“I’ve been a member of iRacing for a few years,” he says.  “I don’t participate in official races very often, but I do use the service to practice, especially being from California and running the ARCA Series where a lot of the tracks are new to me, especially the speedways and intermediate tracks.

“It’s so important to have your timing right, especially when you’re new to a track and you only get a short time to practice and qualify.  With iRacing I feel as if I have a good foundation when I arrive at a track, even if I’ve never been there before.”

Reed’s schedule is made busier still by his involvement in Ryan’s Mission and as a National Celebrity Advocate for the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) devoted to improving lives and curing T1D.  As part of Ryan’s Mission, Reed is hosting the iRacing to Cure Diabetes event starting at 8:30 pm on August 28 and September 4.  The races will feature the Chevy Silverado Class C at Chicagoland Speedway with a suggested minimum donation of $5.00 to join.

Erik Perez Scores Fastest KO in Bantamweight History

Greg Jackson-trained bantamweight Erik Perez clearly had somewhere else he needed to be Saturday night, so he wasted no time in taking out Massachusetts native Ken Stone.  Coming forward in their first exchange winging a right hook that was more guided missile than fist, Perez clipped his foe cleanly on the chin, and when Stone face-planted and rolled over, Stone followed him down and starched him with even more punches.  Referee Herb Dean jumped in at the 17-second mark, and the victory via TKO — and new record among the 135-pounders — belonged to Perez. 

The win is Perez's second in as many UFC appearances.  In his Octagon debut, he deftly arm barred TUF veteran John Albert

UFC President Dana White softens stance on having female fighters inside the Octagon

If you’d asked UFC President Dana White a year ago for his opinion on the role of women in MMA he would have offered up an answering involving respect for their endeavors while adding the notion of females inside his organization’s cage was unlikely. However, at this point in 2011 the name Ronda Rousey was only one of a budding star rather than the substantial draw she has become since.

Rousey’s rise to the top, along with a number of other recent bouts between women, have apparently changed White’s mind on the topic to the point he has spoken openly about adding a women’s division (likely bantamweight) to the UFC at some point in the near future.

White was asked about the matter during an MetroPCS online chat with fans and the outspoken executive mentioned he was “warming up” to the idea of females inside the Octagon, stating he had already begun weighing the idea of bringing women in or possibly a 115-pound male weight-class instead.

“I don’t think I’ve been too shy about what I think about Ronda Rousey,” explained White on his appreciation of what he’s seen from females as of late. “She just looked impressive, and not only did she look impressive on Saturday night, her numbers killed it on Showtime, too.”

Sand Trap is a fun and difficult physics maze game

Sand Trap is one of those games that at first seem too hard to bother with, but when you try to stop playing it you discover you're hooked.

The goal is to get as much sand as you possibly can out of the maze and into the bucket at the bottom of the screen. You need to rotate your maze every which way to get the sand rolling around it. You then try to direct the sand to one of the exits of the maze, and hopefully into the bucket. It took me several tries to actually get sand into the bucket, but that might be due to the fact that I didn't even realize the bucket was there at first. Things improved significantly after that.

As you level up, the mazes get more complicated, with moving parts and other things making your life more difficult. Once you manage to get through all these obstacles and get enough sand into your bucket, you can move on.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy game, but it's highly addictive. The graphics remind me of some long lost game from the 80s, but this just proves that you don't need super graphics and crazy sound to make a game work. There's a soothing guitar track playing in the background and that's it, as far as I could hear, and you can enjoy it just as much with no sound at all.
