Lotus reveals its new E21 F1 car

Lotus E21

Lotus has unveiled the new E21 Formula 1 car that it hopes will provide a springboard for it to become a top team in 2013.

After an encouraging 2012 campaign where Lotus delivered a victory in Abu Dhabi, the Enstone-based outfit believes its evolutionary car can move it further forward.

Team principal Eric Boullier said: “I think it is fair to say that great things are possible. The leap we made from 2011 to 2012 showed what we are capable of.

“Add to this the continuity and potential of our driver line-up and we have a very powerful cocktail for the season ahead.

“Our ambitious plan to turn ourselves into one of the top teams in Formula 1 is coming to fruition and now we need to harness this with strong and regular podium results.

“We are lean and hungry. Enstone knows how to win championships, but it is a while since we have won so we are very eager to taste glory again.”

The E21 is visually similar to last year’s car, but technical director James Allison said that certain areas of it have undergone a wholesale redesign.

“Depending on where you look, some parts of the new car are a ground-up redesign and in other areas we have further optimised the best bits of the design philosophy we’ve adopted for several seasons,” he said.

“The front and rear suspension layouts are substantially revised to try and give us better aerodynamic opportunities. The front wing is a continuation of the concepts we have worked on since the 2009 rules were published.

“For the rear wing system, we’ve continued to try to work on having a satisfactory level of rear downforce stability whilst having maximum DRS switching potential.”

The E21 will feature the passive double DRS that the team evaluated last year and the outfit has elected not to run with the ‘vanity panel’ that is allowed this year to hide the stepped nose.

Allison has high hopes for the new car, but is equally aware that its performance will only become clear once the outfit starts racing.

“The E20 proved itself to be an effective racing car, so there is an element of expectation from the E21,” he said.

“We have continued with our design themes and tried to build a more efficient and faster racing car based on all the lessons we learnt last year. How successful we have been at this we will only know once we take to the track at grands prix.”

Green Earth Technologies’ G-OIL® named “Official Motor Oil” of Daytona International Speedway and the DAYTONA 500®

Green Earth Technologies’ G-OIL® named “Official Motor Oil” of Daytona International Speedway and the DAYTONA 500®
Green Earth Technologies’ G-OIL® named “Official Motor Oil” of Daytona International Speedway and the DAYTONA 500®
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- Daytona International Speedway today announced a new partnership with Green Earth Technologies, Inc. (GET) (OTC Bulletin Board: GETG), naming the Florida-based makers of G-OIL®, the first bio-based full synthetic oil used in NASCAR competition, as the “Official Motor Oil” of Daytona International Speedway and the Daytona 500.

G-OIL made NASCAR history here at Daytona International Speedway in February 2012 when the TriStar Motorsports Toyota Camry driven by Tayler Malsam finished sixth in the DRIVE4COPD 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series event. G-OIL is the world’s first and only bio-based fully synthetic motor oil to receive American Petroleum Institute certification.

“There is no better way to communicate that G-OIL meets the rigors of competition than by becoming the Official Motor Oil of the famed Daytona International Speedway and the Daytona 500,” said Jeffrey Loch, President and CMO of Green Earth Technologies. “NASCAR fans now know that G-OIL will deliver performance for them in their own cars.”

“G-OIL has been proven here in competition at Daytona International Speedway and we are pleased to welcome a Florida-based company that shares our commitment to performance and the environment to the Daytona International Speedway family of official sponsors,” Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III.

Independent tests report that 5W-30 G-OIL Bio-based Advanced Full Synthetic Green Motor Oil had a carbon footprint of about two thirds (67.3%) less than the conventional 5W-30 oil.

“Replacing just 1% of conventional motor oil with G-OIL would save around 137 million pounds of carbon dioxide each year, or the equivalent of planting 2.8 million trees,” said Loch.

G-OIL products will be used in all DIS official vehicles including fan shuttles, safety, maintenance, service and landscaping equipment.

Study: People Who Bike or Walk to Work Enjoy Their Commutes the Most

A study by Ph.D candidate Oliver Smith at Portland State University found that, of all types of commuters, those who travel by bike rank the highest on measures of well-being. Image: Bike Portland

This news will surprise no one who has discovered the joy that is setting off to work on two wheels, but new research out of Portland State University found that people who bike to work enjoy their commutes the most. People who walk to work are close behind on the commute satisfaction scale.

The finding is based on a survey of commuters from the region conducted by Ph.D candidate Oliver Smith. Jonathan Maus at Network blog Bike Portland heard about the study at a happy hour/transportation geek-out put on by Portland State University’s urban planning school, where students shared research they had recently presented at the Transportation Research Board in D.C.:

I met Oliver Smith, a Ph.D. Candidate in Urban Studies at the Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning at PSU. Smith recently completed a research project titled, Commute Well-being Among Bicycle, Transit, and Car Users in Portland, Oregon (PDF of presentation poster) Based on surveys from 828 people taken during January through February of 2012, he found that commuting to work under your own power “increases commute well-being.” In other words, the happiest commuters are those who walk and bike. Of course I was happy to see that of all modes surveyed, biking made people the happiest (see chart). The lowest measures of commute well-being were recorded by people who drove alone (which is unfortunate because 58% of Portland commuters get to work that way).

Smith’s research also found that people who make over $75,000 per year, and people who are happy with their job and housing situation were more likely to report a high commute well-being. Major factors that dragged down well-being scores included traffic congestion (non-existent for bike riders), crowded transit vehicles, safety concerns (especially for bikers), and travel times longer than 40 minutes (for auto drivers only).

Elsewhere on the Network today: The League of American Bicyclists reports that Atlanta is gearing up to establish itself as a bike-friendly city. Car Free Baltimore shares a list of ideas for making the city more livable in the short term. And Urban Review STL explains why St. Louis needs true high-speed rail to Chicago.

Mystery Mopar Limited Edition Teased Prior to Chicago Debut [2013 Chicago Auto Show]

Working from the inside out, Chrysler has released a single interior image of its upcoming Mopar ’13 limited-edition vehicle. Set to debut next month at the Chicago auto show, the Mopar ’13 follows in the footsteps of the limited-edition Mopar ’10 Dodge Challenger, Mopar ’11 Dodge Charger, and Mopar ’12 Chrysler 300. The sole image provided reveals just one fact about the vehicle, which is that the seats will be upholstered in a brilliant-blue-and-black scheme.

Considering Mopar’s history of introducing features that eventually make their way into rank-and-file Chrysler vehicles, it’s a good bet the Mopar ’13 vehicle will showcase at least one example of custom or performance-enhancing technology. Previous Chrysler and industry firsts introduced on Mopar limited editions include electronic owners manuals, wireless charging for portable devices, and—much to the dismay of teenagers everywhere—EVTS, an electronic tracking system that texts owners when their vehicle exceeds pre-set speed or distance parameters.

“This vehicle is the perfect canvas for personalization and customization,” said Mopar president and CEO Pietro Gorlier. “We couldn’t wait to get our hands on it and give it the Mopar treatment.” We’re sure that Gorlier’s excitement about modifying a mystery Chrysler product is genuine, but it’s just so hard to know for sure without knowing which model, exactly, Chrysler’s go-fast arm is working on. But if the upholstery’s any indicator, regardless of which model the Mopar ’13 turns out to be, it’ll be tough to miss.

Meet the $4.7 Billion Birmingham Highway Only Cronyism Could Build

It is really a testament to how dominant the highway industrial complex has become that we even have to talk about Birmingham’s Northern Beltline, a $4.7 billion outerbelt first proposed in the 1960s. But with backing from big companies that would reap windfall real estate profits from the highway — and with a U.S. Senator working to secure federal funding — this boondoggle might actually get built.

This 1960s-era outerbelt proposal Birmingham is pursuing would cost $4.7 billion. Image: Birmingham News

The six-lane, 52-mile highway would be fantastically expensive for any state. Even on a per mile basis — $90 million — it is extravagant, making it one of the country’s most expensive highway projects, and by far the priciest one in state history.

To make matters worse, by any measurable outcome the project wouldn’t be all that useful. Regional transportation officials have estimated that this project would reduce congestion on existing freeways by a mere 1 to 3 percent. That’s a big part of the reason, when those planners ranked the 50 most important transportation projects for the Birmingham area, the Northern Beltline was ranked a lowly 36th. (All the remaining 49 projects, by the way, could be completed for $1 billion less than the total cost of the Northern Beltline.)

Even as a job creator — its ostensible purpose — the Northern Beltline underwhelms. A study commissioned by the Coalition for Regional Transportation, a pro-highway non-profit, estimated the project would produce 70,000 jobs and $7 billion in investment. But Chattanooga’s Ochs Center for Metropolitan Studies [PDF] says that study — completed by the Center for Business and Economic Research — was seriously flawed.

“The CBER data confuse permanent jobs with jobs available in any one year and rely on outdated Federal Highway Administration data,” said Ochs Center authors Ken Chilton and Peter B. Meyer.

Chilton and Meyer, on the other hand, estimate the project could produce as few as 2,800 jobs during any of the project years. That equals one job per $456,000 invested.

Plus, Chilton and Meyer say the CBER study examined only benefits of the Beltline and ignored its costs, and that it examined those benefits only against the “build nothing” alternative.

Ochs, meanwhile, estimates the project would attract only 372 businesses and 6,527 residents. Even that paltry influx could occur only after significant additional cost to taxpayers, because sewers need to be built in the undeveloped area the highway would serve.

That led Chilton and Meyer to conclude: “This project would be a poor investment of limited taxpayer dollars given its enormous cost and over-inflated economic benefits.”

“When you look at all the other transportation needs, all the other projects create jobs,” said Gil Rogers, an attorney for the Southern Environmental Law Project, an opponent of the Beltline. “Let’s find the projects that will create the most jobs and take the least amount of time.”

Some of the major landowners around Birmingham's proposed Northern Beltline, including U.S. Steel (land holding shown on the map in red) and the Drummond Company (yellow), are also the project's biggest supporters. Image: Birmingham News

Still, the Northern Beltline is a cause célèbre of the local business community and touted as an economic development opportunity. And — here’s the real kicker — of all the projects destined for delay and eventual abandonment, this is a project that might actually happen. Local officials recently applied for a construction permit, though a lawsuit challenging the environmental assessment is pending.

Rogers says he thinks project proponents believe that if they can “get a shovel in the ground,” it will make the project more difficult to stop. And they are planning to begin with a distant, disconnected segment that would only have any transportation value if the project could be completed — a real gamble in today’s transportation funding climate.

“It just seems very speculative to embark on a project like this,” without all funding in place, Rogers said. “The funding that they have would only build a road to nowhere.”

Supporters say the project would be paid for fully by the federal government, because of a program called the Appalachian Development Highway System. The current transportation bill, MAP-21, eliminated that as a stand-alone program, but in its new form, it can fund qualifying projects with absolutely no local match. Alabama received just $109 million from the fund in 2012. At that level of support, opponents point out, the project would take 43 years to complete.

But one thing this project does have going for it is a handful of powerful supporters. Alabama Senator Richard Shelby has been helping secure federal funds. The Coalition for Regional Transportation, which spun off from the Birmingham Business Alliance, is leading the charge locally.

The Coalition is supported by companies that will see the value of their real estate holdings skyrocket if the highway is built. Paul Vercher, vice chairman of CRT’s board of directors, works for U.S. Steel, the largest landowner along the corridor. The Drummond Company, another major landowner, is also represented on the board.

The group spent roughly $112,000 building support for the highway in 2011. That work included gathering statements of support from 39 local communities — but Rogers says they presented these communities with information about the project’s benefits and nothing about costs. The Coalition for Regional Transportation has also refused offers by Rogers and other opponents to hold public debates.

“A beltway just seems like a dinosaur approach to modern economic development challenges,” Rogers said. “Like most other cities around the U.S., Birmingham has some old interstates that need maintenance and rebuilding. There are some real opportunity costs to pursuing the Beltline.”

Shedlick, Kiss Top 2.4 Hours of Daytona

Jim Shedlick and Norbi Kiss came out on top of the nearly 2000 iRacers competing in last weekend’s 2.4 Hours of Daytona, aka Round Two of the 2013 World Tour of iRacing. Like the Rolex 24 at Daytona itself, the 2.4 Hours of Daytona was not without its challenges (click here for more on that front). In the end, however, the drivers put on a great show – make that 48 great shows over two days – in their Riley Mk XX Daytona Prototypes and McLaren MP4-112C GT3s.

Anthony Roselli bested Riku Alatalo to set fastest DP qualifying time with a lap of 1:35.733, while Fredrik Follestad edged Rens Broekman for the overall pole in the McLaren class with a lap at 1:42.692. As for the online races, it was Roselli leading Shedlick and Chad Holmes home in DP in Friday’s top split, with Trey Cauley finishing a lap up on Tapani Linnaluoto and Paul Williams in the McLaren competition. Saturday saw Shedlick take the DP top split from Jacob Desmarais and Marcus Lindsey while on the McLaren side it was Kiss coming home ahead of Paul Ilbrink and Blake Townend.

When the points were toted-up, the results had Shedlick atop the DP standings with Desmarais and Roselli mounting the second and third steps of the virtual podium and Kiss outpointing Ilbrink and Townend in the MP4-12C GT3 division.

Kubica ‘very comfortable’ in DTM test

Robert Kubica said his DTM test with Mercedes posed no physical problems at all.

The Valencia run on Thursday was the first time that Kubica had driven a high-specification racing car since the horrific rallying accident in February 2011 that left him with multiple fractures and a partially severed right arm.

Kubica completed 114 laps of the Spanish track, initially in wet conditions before the track dried.

“The first installation lap was in the dry, then a few heavy showers of rain came down and we had to wait for the track to dry out,” he said.

“I was able to get to grips with the DTM Mercedes AMG C-coupe and felt very comfortable in the car, even though after my long break it meant adjusting to the high downforce that a state-of-the art DTM race car produces.

“I’m very pleased with my performance on this first day of DTM testing and had no problems whatsoever in the car.”

Robert KubicaMercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff said earlier this week that the test was purely a chance for Kubica to see how he coped in a racing car with downforce.

“We all obviously like Robert. He’s very special. I think what we want to do at Mercedes-Benz is give him a chance of doing a proper test in a proper racing car, seeing how he goes and how he feels,” he said.

“He’s not 100 per cent fit yet. It’s the first time he’s in a car with downforce and I think we have to take it from there.”

Kubica is also working towards a European Rally Championship programme this season, having already won national-level rallies in Italy.

Tandy joins Falken for Sebring

Nick TandyNick Tandy will drive for the Walker Racing-run Falken team at the American Le Mans Series-opening Sebring 12 Hours.

The 28-year-old Briton marked his debut as a Porsche factory driver by taking pole position in the GT class for last weekend’s Daytona 24 Hours.

He will now partner Falken regulars Bryan Sellars and Wolf Henzler in the 911 GT3 RSR at the March 16 event.

“To join Wolf and Bryan, and Derrick Walker’s team is an honour and something I intend to make the most of,” said Tandy, the 2011 Carrera Cup Germany champion.

“The team has been having great results with its partnership with Porsche on both sides of the Atlantic and I hope to be able to contribute to even more development and success.”

Porsche has yet to reveal Tandy’s full programme for 2013.

Last year he was awarded the Porsche Cup for the best season-long performance in Porsche machinery by a non-factory driver. He finished second in the International GT Open as well as winning four races in the ADAC GT Masters.

MOUNTAIN VIEW RACING TEAM REPORT NHRA Nationals

The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Las Vegas
Another final round for Nobile in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (October 29) - still one week shy of his 21st birthday, Mountain View Racing Pro Stock driver Vincent Nobile has never pulled the lever on a slot machine or played a single hand of black jack, but that doesn't mean he hasn't gotten lucky in Las Vegas. For the second time this year, Nobile drove Nick Mitsos' NAPA/Mountain View Dodge to a Pro Stock final round at the famed Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Nobile was runner-up to teammate Allen Johnson at the first NHRA Las Vegas event last April and the Mopar duo repeated that performance this weekend with the win once again going to Johnson. Nobile did his job on the starting line with a great reaction time but his 6.67 elapsed time fell to Johnson's 6.63.

"Obviously, it would have been great to win but overall we're very happy with the way our weekend went," said Nobile. "We thought we had a good chance to win the final but we broke a lash cap on the run and that hurt our performance a bit. We've been knocking on the door of another final round for the last few races and it was nice to finally get there again."

On his way to the final round, Nobile drove past reigning NHRA Full Throttle series champion Jason Line and also claimed a crucial victory against Erica Enders, his closest rival in the points battle. Enders is currently ranked third while Nobile is fourth. The strong showing allowed Nobile to move to within 14 points of Enders with one event remaining in the 2012 season.

"That's our goal right now," said Nobile. "We know that we can finish in third place and that would be awesome for our team. We finished fifth last season and obviously we'd like to improve on that. A couple of races ago I wasn't so sure we could do it but it's definitely within our grasp now.

"The final race of the season is also in Pomona, which is the home track for the Mitsos family and the whole Mountain View Tires team. Nothing would make me happier than to end the season with a victory there."

The season-ending Automobile Club of Southern California Finals will take place at Auto Club Pomona Raceway, Nov. 8-11.

Review: 2013 Cadillac XTS [w/video]

The Cadillac Of Stopgaps

2013 Cadillac XTS

As confusing as most alphanumeric car names have gotten in recent years, at least one constant has been that the letter "X" is generally indicative of a crossover. Then why did General Motors use this letter on its new 2013 Cadillac XTS luxury sedan? Well, for that, we'll have to look to the world of mathematics where "X" stands for an unknown variable or a placeholder. Now we're talking. The XTS is just an interim product sitting at the top of Cadillac's four-door food chain until the brand gets a true flagship in place. That sounds like a lot of resources to spend on what will likely be a one-and-done model, but the automaker needed to get something - anything - to replace the DTS.

So here you have the 2013 XTS. A big luxury sedan that was created to bridge the gap between Cadillac's recent past and its pending future. Going into our week with this XTS knowing that it was a stopgap measure proved to be both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, we know (or hope) that this car will act as a baseline for future high-end Cadillac models, but at the same time, we couldn't help but be mindful of past stopgap models, albeit in more entry-level segments, like the Cimarron and Catera.

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s a . . . Superman-Themed Kia Optima Hybrid! [2013 Chicago Auto Show]

Kia Optima hybrid Superman

Kia’s relationship with DC Entertainment is by now well known—the duo created a batch of superhero-themed Kias for last year’s SEMA show—and now the partnership has resulted in a Superman-themed Optima hybrid, set to debut at the 2013 Chicago auto show.

Like the SEMA cars, this Optima is being used to raise awareness for the We Can Be Heroes campaign to combat hunger in Africa. Kia released an image previewing the customized Optima ahead of the car’s debut, and it appears as though the sedan will receive some pretty hefty upgrades to reach man-of-steel spec, including a wild blue-and-red paint job and a crazy body kit.

Trummer joins Rapax for GP2

Simon Trummer 2012 Arden GP2

Simon Trummer will move to Rapax for his second season in GP2.

The 23-year-old Swiss driver joins race winner Stefano Coletti at the squad.

“I followed their races in the last few years and I’m sure I’ll be able to take full advantage from some great support from them,” said Trummer.

“Being able to run a second season in GP2 is a chance that some drivers don’t get and I hope to reward the staff which support me with the best possible results.”

Trummer only finished 23rd in the standings in his GP2 rookie season, but Rapax team boss Andrea Bergamini is confident he can make strong progress in 2013.

“Last year, making his debut in a tough series for rookies like GP2, he showed he is a consistent driver and adopted a really professional approach,” Bergamini said.

“We hope to contribute to his growth and we admit we’re looking forward to guiding him to his maiden top-notch results in the championship.”

Pruett leads all-Ganassi front row

Ganassi, Daytona 24 HoursChip Ganassi Racing blocked out the front row for this weekend’s Daytona 24 Hours.

Multiple Grand-Am champion Scott Pruett claimed pole position in the lead Ganassi Riley-BMW MkXXVI on a time of 1m40.553s, which put him just over a tenth clear of team-mate Scott Dixon in the squad’s second Daytona Prototype.

Pruett, who is seeking a record-equalling fifth Daytona victory, said: “It’s exciting for us to be one-two up front. It was right on the edge, but thankfully we managed to hang on.”

Third fastest was Dane Cameron in the Team Sahlen Riley-BMW on a 1m41.213s, ahead of Michael Valiante in the fastest of the two Ford-engined Rileys entered by the 2012 Daytona-winning Michael Shank Racing team.

The top Chevrolet-engined Coyote ended up in fifth position in the hands of Spirit of Daytona driver Richard Westbrook.

Britain’s Nick Tandy took qualifying honours in his first race as a Porsche factory driver.

His time of 1m47.631s aboard the Konrad Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 Cup put him two tenths clear of second-placed Andy Lally in the similar Magnus Racing car.

Sainz wants to return to the Dakar

Sainz wants to return to the DakarFormer Dakar Rally winner Carlos Sainz says his early retirement from this year’s event has not dissuaded him from returning with Nasser Al-Attiyah’s Qatar Red Bull buggy project in 2014.

Having led after the opening stage, Sainz dropped out of Dakar with an engine fault.

His team-mate Al-Attiyah suffered a similar issue later in the rally and also retired.

Sainz says he is convinced of the buggy’s potential, but with only a small amount of pre-rally testing there was not much chance of a repeat victory.

“First of all, I would like to say it was nice to come back and I don’t regret that decision,” he said.

“We knew the project was very young and now it’s a matter to try and start working. If we start working now, I would like to come back.

“You can do the first year to learn, but to do the second year in the same fashion, I’m not so sure.

“Nasser is clever and he knows what we have to do, and in that way I will be more than happy to help him.

“We can make a strong team, but we need to start working now to have the prospect of a good result. We will make a plan at the latest next month.”

Hudson River Park Trust’s Pier 57 Will Add to Car/Bike Greenway Conflicts

Plans for Pier 57 include a two-lane driveway, in teal, separated from 11th Avenue by the Hudson River Greenway, in light green. Red arrows, added by Streetsblog, indicate crossings planned for 17th, 16th and 14th Streets. Image: Philip Habib and Associates

A plan from the Hudson River Park Trust to transform Pier 57 into a retail and food market will add 75 parking spaces and a two-lane driveway to the park between 17th and 14th Streets, creating new points of conflict where people biking on the Hudson River Greenway will have to contend with cars crossing the path.

The crossings will have traffic signals with separate phases for cyclists and drivers, and will include speed tables to bring crossing vehicles up to greenway level. Crossings at 14th Street, where traffic exits the driveway, and 16th Street, where southbound 11th Avenue drivers will use a dedicated turn lane to access the driveway, will both have speed tables.

The widest crossing, at 17th Street, where the Chelsea Piers driveway ends and the Pier 57 driveway will begin, will not have a speed table.

“At the end of the day, having any driveways crossing the greenway is a safety problem,” said Noah Budnick of Transportation Alternatives. As an alternative to adding new crossings on the Greenway, Budnick pointed to the Goldman Sachs driveway on West Street between Murray and Vesey Streets, where the bikeway and sidewalk run between the street-side driveway and the building entrance.

The Pier 57 project also includes 75 parking spaces on the basement level of the pier, with access from the driveway across the sidewalk. “There’s no need for parking there,” Budnick said, adding that it will only serve to generate traffic and “increase the number of people driving across the greenway.”

The Pier 57 spaces will not be open to the public and instead will be reserved for those with business at the pier, according to Christine Berthet, co-chair of Community Board 4′s transportation committee. “Contrast that with Chelsea Piers,” she said, with its large public parking garage.

The project has already received a supportive vote from CB 4 after developers adjusted plans to address earlier feedback from the board. The project is now before the City Planning Commission, which next meets on February 6.

Pier 57 was built originally as a passenger and cargo terminal for Grace Lines in the 1950s, later serving as an MTA bus depot from the late 1960s until 2004, at which point it became a temporary NYPD detention center during the Republican National Convention. Since then, it has remained unused. Along with other projects like Pier 40, the Hudson River Park Trust will use revenue from Pier 57 to help fund park maintenance.

Berthet said that the way the Hudson River Park Trust has used projects with on-site parking to support the park creates problems for park users. “The more you build, the more you’re going to need vehicular crossings,” she said. “The more we build on those piers, the more we are making the greenway and the park unusable.”

Joe Mattioli, III leaves Pocono Raceway to pursue new endeavors

Pocono Raceway Logo
Pocono Raceway Logo
Long Pond, PA (January 28, 2013) ― Joseph R. Mattioli, III, the son of Dr. Rose Mattioli and the late Dr. Joseph Mattioli, announced today that he is stepping down as a member of Pocono Raceway’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

Mattioli’s tenure at Pocono started in 1974 following his graduation from Lehigh University and spanned over 40 years, with him serving as a member of the Board of Directors, Executive Committee and as its past President and COO.  In 1995, with Pocono enjoying unprecedented success, Mattioli stepped down as President and COO, but continued to assist the family business as a member of the Board and Executive Committee.

“After college, Joe was heading to law school, but his father asked him to take a year off and help us at the track,” remembered Joe’s mother and Pocono’s current Chairman of the Board, Dr. Rose Mattioli.  “We were still practicing medicine in Philadelphia and needed him there at the track.  One year turned into over 20, and he was very instrumental in the Raceway’s success in the early years.”

Joe Mattioli is especially proud of Pocono’s success through the 70’s and 80’s, when debt service, a hurricane, a recession, an oil crisis and two sanctioning body boycotts during the USAC – CART wars threatened to shut the track down. “This was a family business, so failure was not an option.  With a lot of help, including major assistance from the France and Hulman families, somehow we fought our way to success,” Mattioli concluded.

According to Mattioli, it makes a lot of sense to leave Pocono Raceway’s management structure at this point in his life. “My dad told me that the secret to happiness is to completely change directions about every 15 years, and with the track now in the very capable hands of our next generation, I feel free to do just that,” Mattioli commented.  “My nephews, nieces and sons are the future of Pocono Raceway, and I have no doubt they will continue to provide leadership, meet the challenges and guide Pocono Raceway into the future as my Dad’s legacy had always intended.”

Mattioli’s future plans include focusing more time on non-profit and veterans’ organizations that he supports, such as the Military Warriors Support Foundation, which provides housing assistance to returning veterans, and the Motor Sports Institute, which promotes academic success through engagement with motor racing.  He also plans to develop Group 341, a consulting business he began 2011. With offices in California, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma, Group 341 provides strategic planning, marketing, branding, and event management consulting services.  Group 341 commercial clients include America’s Woodshops and Active International.

The entire Mattioli family, the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee wish to thank Joe for all he has done for the Raceway over the past 40 years and wish him well as he begins the next chapter in his life.

Today’s Trans-Am: Continental Tires Series Starts 2012 Road-Racing Season with a Mustang Win

Continental Tires Series Starts 2012 Road Racing Season with a Mustang Win

Make no mistake, the original Trans-Am series deserves the heady reputation it earned in the early 1970s for fender-to-fender action, but you should know we now have the Continental Tire Series and it’s just as exciting. Okay, this Trans-Am remix might not have the big-name drivers, like Mark Donohue, Parnelli Jones or Sam Posey, but the field makes up for it with tough racing. Better yet, the field is filled with some of our favorite cars: Mustangs, Camaros, BMW M3s, and Aston Martins in the GS field. Move to the ST machines and its Honda Civics, Mazda MX-5s and MazdaSpeed3s, Porsche Boxsters, Nissan Altimas, and BMW 328s.

Continental Tires Series Starts 2012 Road Racing Season with a Mustang Win

This weekend is the first race of the season and from the green flag it looked as though the Aston Martins—one starting from the pole—had the measure of the GS class, but the Stevenson-entered Camaro GS.R hounded it, as did the Rum Bum Porsche 997. In fact, the trio of Astons stayed in the top six right to the end, but it was the Mustang Boss 302 R of Jack Roush’s team, his son, Jack Jr., teaming with Billy Johnson that finally had the lead when the checkered flag came out, the Rum Bum Porsche 997 in second, and an Aston finishing out the GS podium.

In the ST class, the Hondas beat on the Mazdas, the Porsche Boxsters, the BMWs and the Volkswagen Jettas. And what won? A Nissan Altima Coupe, followed by a BMW 128i and a Civic Si.

June 15: Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
June 29: Watkins Glen International

INDYCAR News and Notes – Jan. 28, 2013

INDYCAR Logo
INDYCAR Logo
Today’s IZOD IndyCar Series, Firestone Indy Lights and Mazda Road to Indy headlines:

1. IZOD IndyCar drivers sweep podium at Rolex 24

2. Super Bowl matchup creates wager between INDYCAR events

3. Conway to join Rahal Letterman Lanigan at Long Beach

4. Miller shifts gears, becomes driver coach

1. IZOD IndyCar drivers sweep podium at Rolex 24: Charlie Kimball leaned over the pit lane wall to cheer on Juan Pablo Montoya during his final stint in the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates car. There was still an hour remaining in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, but the drama was as thick as the morning fog that brought out a caution for nearly two hours.

Kimball was soon joined on the pit stand by co-drivers Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas for the duration of the 51st event on the 3.56-mile, 12-turn circuit, which featured an event-record 72 lead changes. The last and most important came with 4 minutes, 52 seconds left when Montoya inherited the lead as Max Angelelli in the No. 10 VelocityWW car for Wayne Taylor Racing ducked onto pit lane for a splash of fuel.

Minutes later, Kimball joined the Victory Circle celebration in his first major touring car race.

“It’s pretty special,” said Kimball, who enters his third IZOD IndyCar Series season in the No. 83 Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing car. “I just had to come in and learn and not get into too much trouble and let them keep us in the race. Having these guys as teammates took a lot of pressure off my shoulders.

“The event was incredible. I was sitting there with four hours to go and thinking we have a whole Indy 500 left as far as time and why do they only run this event once a year. For the Ganassi group to be able get together with different cars, different drivers, all different walks of life and yet all from one team … We do our job in the car and in the pits, and to come away with a win is just overwhelming.”

It was the fifth victory in 10 trips to Daytona International Speedway for Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, and a record-tying fifth victory for Pruett (tying Hurley Haywood). It also was the 151st victory for Chip Ganassi Racing Teams.

“We knew we had good cars and my hat off to all our guys in Indianapolis who put the cars together,” Ganassi said. “I’m very proud of our team’s fifth victory.”

Reigning IZOD IndyCar Series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay, co-driving the VelocityWW car, and Justin Wilson, who co-drove the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing car, completed an IZOD IndyCar Series podium sweep. Wilson co-drove the car to victory in 2012.

“It’s a good way to start the year,” said Hunter-Reay, who bested his previous Rolex 24 high of third place in 2010. “The execution was top notch, and to be here with Chevrolet after everything we accomplished last year was special. I really love being a part of Team Chevy, and it’s a big part of my career.”

It was the fourth podium finish for Wilson at Daytona. The No. 60 car was seven laps down early in the race because of a mechanical issue.

“You always want to do your best for Mike,” said Wilson, who this week will attempt to finalize his 2013 plans with Dale Coyne Racing. “He’s just so enthusiastic that it rubs off on everyone. If you’d have told us after the first hour that we’d have a chance of finishing third we’d have been over the moon.

“As you’re standing on the podium you’re thinking, ‘There’s nothing quite like being first,’ but third place after everything we’ve come through in this race is a great result.”

The podium finishers were the only ones on the lead lap (907 laps completed).

Other INDYCAR drivers and their finish:

• Sebastien Bourdais, No. 2 Starworks Motorsport with Alex Popow, sixth overall in Daytona Prototype.

• Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon, No. 02 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, 37th overall and 11th in Daytona Prototype.

• Simon Pagenaud, No. 42 Team Sahlen, 21st overall and ninth in Daytona Prototype.

• Tony Kanaan, No. 21 Dener Motorsports, 46th overall and 28th in GT.

• James Hinchcliffe, No. 70 Mazdaspeed/Speedsource, 53rd overall and fourth in GX.

• Tristan Vautier and Spencer Pigot, No. 00 Visit Florida Racing/Speedsource, 56th overall and sixth in GX.

2. Super Bowl matchup creates wager between INDYCAR events: Officials from Sonoma Raceway and the Grand Prix of Baltimore presented by SRT have entered into a friendly wager over the outcome of Super Bowl XLVII between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens.

The wager between the two IZOD IndyCar® Series race hosts will feature each putting up local fare. Race On, the promoter of the Grand Prix of Baltimore presented by SRT, will offer some delicious crab cakes from Maryland as well as Berger cookies from the famous bakery in East Baltimore, and Sonoma Raceway, in true wine country fashion, will offer some of Sonoma Valley’s world-class wine.

“I spent a few of my younger years in a suburb of Baltimore called Washington DC, and I know how tasty those Chesapeake Bay crabs can be,” said Steve Page, president and general manager of Sonoma Raceway. “I appreciate the generous offer and look forward to sharing those delicious crab cakes with our staff… Go Niners!”

Sonoma Raceway, located just 45 minutes from San Francisco, will root on its home team, which is looking for its sixth Super Bowl win in as many attempts.

“The biggest sporting event of the year is even more unique in 2013 with head coach Jim Harbaugh of our San Francisco 49ers versus his older brother, John Harbaugh, but the real story revolves around the players,” said Dwight Clark, former 49ers wide receiver and two-time Super Bowl champion. “Who wants to be Super Bowl Champion the most? I say it’ll be 49ers 28, Ravens 21. Go Niners!!”

The Grand Prix of Baltimore presented by SRT will back the Ravens, who won in their only visit to the Super Bowl in 2001, and will be joined in the wager by former Ravens Michael McCrary. McCrary, a two-time Pro Bowl selection and defensive standout on the Ravens team that won Super Bowl XXXV, expects his hometown team will be the one to maintain its flawless Super Bowl record.

“This is going to be a fantastic game between two exceptional teams,” said Race On Manager J.P. Grant. “I think it’s going to come down to the wire as the Harbaugh brothers and their players look for that single opportunity that will put them over the top. In the end, though, the Lombardi trophy is coming back to Charm City and the victory parade will wind its way down the front straightaway of our great street course!”

“The 49ers are a great team and an amazing organization, but the Ravens are riding an emotional high that is going to take Baltimore to another Super Bowl victory,” McCrary said. “Ray Lewis is going to celebrate his retirement with a second championship ring, and when the team returns to Baltimore, I’m going to toast their victory with a glass of fine Sonoma wine!”

The Super Bowl will take place Feb. 3, in New Orleans.

3. Conway to join Rahal Letterman Lanigan at Long Beach: Mike Conway will drive a second entry for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing at the IZOD IndyCar Series event at Long Beach on April 21.

Conway, 29, of England, who recorded his first IZOD IndyCar Series win at Long Beach in 2011, will drive the No. 30 Honda-powered car as a companion to regular driver Graham Rahal’s car.

“The team has proven their speed and technical excellence in the past and I can’t wait to start working with everybody,” Conway said. “I worked with (RLL race engineer) Eddie (Jones) indirectly when he was Marco’s (Andretti) engineer at Andretti Autosport so we would debrief as a group. He knows his stuff and has been around a long time so it should be fun working together. I hope to add more races for the upcoming season but in the meantime, I look forward to getting back on a circuit that I previously won on.”

Conway has made 53 IZOD IndyCar Series starts with A.J. Foyt Racing, Andretti Autosport and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing. In addition to his win at Long Beach, he finished on the podium at Toronto in 2012 and Sonoma in 2009.

“I am really pleased to welcome Mike to the team,” team co-owner Bobby Rahal said. “In 2011, Mike Lanigan and I met with Mike and his representatives, and were really working hard to get him into the team but it didn’t work out. Fortunately, we are able to do so now. Mike is a very good driver and I think he will be very competitive in our environment. He and Graham get along well so it’s a real one-two punch for us.”

4. Miller shifts gears, becomes driver coach: Joel Miller has won karting and Skip Barber National championships, was runner-up in the Star Mazda championship and competed in Firestone Indy Lights – all since 2005.

Now the 24-year-old from Hesperia, Calif., undertakes a new role in racing as driver coach for the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship powered by Mazda – two rungs of the Mazda Road to Indy development ladder. Miller will work alongside technical and driver consultant Johnny Unser, who will return for his fourth season.

Miller, also an instructor at the Skip Barber Racing School, holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California-Riverside.

“Joel will be a great driver coach,” said Spencer Pigot, who moves up to Pro Mazda with Team Pelfrey this season. “He has experience in both series and has won a lot of races.”

Down to the Wire

Hudson leads Luza through Turn Three en route to victory at the Milwaukee Mile.

Season Four for the NASCAR iRacing.com Class B Series came to a close at The Milwaukee Mile in Wisconsin.  120 laps around the one mile oval would close-out the season for 204 sim-racers, with the championship battle between Brandon Jerrell (Atlantic) and Ryan Luza (Texas) coming down to the wire in the weekly Friday night Strength of Field race.

Tyler D Hudson (Mid-South) closed-out the season just as he’d opened it: in Victory Lane.  Hudson dominated Friday night’s 4833 SoF race by leading 112 laps.  Although Luza came home second to Hudson, that wouldn’t be enough for him to claim the championship.  Points leade Jerrell kept Luza in his sights through the event, and finished third position to claim his first iRacing.com championship.  Alex Warren (Illinois) and Bryon Daley (New York) rounded-out the top five in the 29 car field.

When the final points were toted-up, Jerrell took home the championship over Hudson by 102 points with Luza slipping to P3, 107 points out of the lead.  David Cater (Carolina) and Armando Vargas (California) completed the top five for the season.
